I well aware of the irony here...

What I mean is that most mediums I've RPed in before were chat programs, so conversations were just two people taking turns talking, which sounds even more stupid as I write it out.

But I've never RPed on a forum, and it seems like either you'd have to role play the other character slightly in a conversation just to have any kind of steady pacing, or you'd have long moody periods where a person would say something and then spend a paragraph musing over details in the environment while the other player typed up their reply and equally moody observations of the weather.

..OR maybe conversations are more concise than that?

    Sorry in advance.

Perhaps I can shed some light on it -

Depending upon how you do it and there are thousands of ways to do so - you would have a said character give their portion of the introductory dialogue and conversation then wait for your partner’s turn.

    Example -

Mr. Smith gently placed his glass of wine down gently with a face of annoyance as Aunt Gertrude again, for the fifth time, began to grind her false teeth, which made that cring worthy rubber squeak again at his dinner table.

“ Aunt...Gertrude...,” Mr. Smith said with a slight muscle spasm, “ Could you please stop grinding your teeth like that...it’s highly annoying if not very...very...rude....,”

    Partner Reply -

Aunt Gertrude only looked up at Mr. Smith still grinding her upper jaw against its lower jaw, crunching away at lettuce leaves that began to rain down upon her sweater and the place in front of her.

“ Fwuak ufff,” Gertrude suddenly replied, her grey eyes looked at Mr.Smith with a “ What are you going to do now?” dare as she broke a tomato half in two, sending juice and the severed half on its way to the table.

    Your reply -

“ You absolutely disgust me!” Mr. Smith then shouted, “ Vile woman! - I demand you leave this table at once!”

Mr. Smith had also slammed his right open palm against the surface of the table making the contents of everyone’s cups swish around.

    “ I said get out!”

So - in a sense you can establish the context and setting at the same time to your writing partner, then allow them to use that to support their answer while giving avenues for them to produce their own reply.

It’s a two fer - in that the two are giving enough content to make the RP move forward.
