"I've had a long day, all I want to do is eat."

This particular statement, coming from Theo, was not an odd one. She almost always wanted to eat, which meant that being a waitress in a diner that actually sold good food was a tough job. It had its perks, even if it meant that Theo had to come home smelling like canola oil most days. Today though, she'd been at the garage with Joe all day, so she didn't get to have her mid-shift snack breaks. With Joe, there were never snack breaks. Partially because he didn't want food anywhere near other people's cars, and partially because in the garage, Theo was too busy to actually notice how time was flying by.

Waitressing was a boring job. Working on cars was much more fun in comparison, because she learned something new every day.

Unfortunately, with time flying by while at work, Theo didn't realise that she was late for her dinner with Adam. Twice in a row, she was late, and she didn't want it to become a whole thing, which was why she dropped whatever was doing as soon as she glanced at the clock on the wall — by accident of course — and rushed to leave. All she stopped for was to wash her hands and to quickly change from her greasy overalls into jeans and a t-shirt — she always kept a spare pair of clothes lying around in Joe's office in the garage. Soon enough, she found Adam waiting on the sidewalk outside the video rental store they frequented, and they'd begun walking toward the restaurant where they'd be having dinner.

"We could have been eating by now if you'd actually shown up on time," Adam teased, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans as he walked alongside her.

Theo peered up at him with narrowed eyes. "Ha-ha, very funny. I'm sorry," she grinned. "Now, where are we going?"

"Some new place opened up down the street. I figured we could try something new out, instead of going to the same places?" Adam suggested, nodding ahead. Theo followed his gaze, intending to see the restaurant, but since she wasn't looking where she was going for a few moments, she instead bumped right into someone.

Theo could vaguely hear Adam still talking, but for the moment, she wasn't paying attention, because she was recovering from the little stumble. When she managed to steady herself, she looked up to apologise but the words never left her lips.

Theo was just... frozen. Adam seemed to notice too, since she had stopped walking, and he stopped as well, looking at her in confusion. Did he not see who she was looking at?

Meanwhile, Theo continued to stare. She didn't know what to say. This was easily the last person she expected to see back in town... or any time soon really. Last she heard, he was doing pretty well in Juilliard. Well, up until their fight. They hardly spoke since then and now... he was here.

She had so much in her mind, plenty of things she wanted to say, but somehow, all she could manage was, "Rio?"

    RIO BROOKES
It had been three years. Three long years since he had last set foot in this godforsaken town.

Had all his hard work been for nothing? The future he’d once believed to be so full of possibilities now seemed dull and predictable. With uncomfortable clarity, he could envision himself twenty years from now: driving down this same road, in this same car, radio cranked up to the music of some youth—a painful reminder of what he could have been, had things been different. He’d be a spiteful old man, a heap of broken dreams, a dejected waste of potential.

Melody had tried to reason with him. “I know it sucks, but it’s not the end of the world. You’ll be back in Juilliard before you know it. Things will get better.”

But when did things ever get better for their family? His parents hadn’t changed at all. They had grown old, but the years had failed to impart them with any wisdom. It angered him. He had every right to feel that way. Yet, he still loved his family to death, and love left him with very few options.

It was in the name of love that he drove to the drug store to buy his father some aspirin. The drug store that—he would soon find—had been demolished. And in its place was a restaurant that looked to him like it had just sprung out of the ground overnight.

But in that very moment, his mind failed to come to any rational assessment, and he looked about like some lost child.

He made a quick turn—a mistake, he belatedly realized—and something hit his chest with such force he all but nearly lost his balance.

    “Rio?”

The voice was familiar, in a way that made it painful to breathe. It was two years since he ‘d last heard her voice. Three, without the phone static.

It took him a few seconds to realize Adam was right beside her. Adam, who was slow to catch on. Understandable. Rio had not only grown out his hair, he had probably put on a bit of weight too.

“Hi,” Rio said lamely, steadying the girl with both hands. He’d been planning to surprise his friends, but between trying to find a job and taking care of Rain, he’d never really had the opportunity. Or so he told himself.

In any case, it was good to see them again. They’d changed quite a bit, more than what the eyes could see. Rio couldn’t exactly pinpoint what it was. It was a kind of energy, he supposed. They all did a lot of growing up these past few years.

But there were some things that just didn’t change.

“Is it just me or did you get taller?” Rio looked pensive for a moment, trying to measure Theo’s height with his hand. Then his face broke into a smile. “Nevermind, it’s just me.”

Then, to Adam: “Hey, man, you didn’t forget me, did you?”

It all felt so surreal. When Theo thought about when she would see Rio again, she figured it would be at some concert of his where she looked... well, less like she'd just gotten out of work. She probably still had a grease stain or two on her cheek or her forehead. She'd been in a hurry to leave, so she hadn't bothered to stop and check.

Somehow it was pretty easy to slip back into old habits with Rio. For the time being, Theo could almost forget that it had been three years since she had seen him in the flesh, and she laughed a little as he commented on her height. She had probably stopped growing the moment she entered high school.

Theo glanced to Adam when Rio addressed him, and she watched as he overcame his own shock. "Of course not," he said, shaking his head, a smile now lighting up his face. "It's been so long." He reached out in an attempt to hug his old friend and Theo watched with a sudden feeling of discomfort in her stomach.

When Rio left for Juilliard it had put a wrench in all their plans as a band, which was something Theo of course never forgot, but she hadn't exactly brought it up since their argument. Adam, as far as she knew, had similar feelings, though he was better at keeping them contained. She just hoped that nothing would come up right now.

"What are you doing back in town?" Theo asked, tucking some hair behind her ear as she looked up at him. It was good to see him back, of course, and this was evidenced by the bright smile she wore, but she was confused. They hadn't spoken in two years and here he was, without a call or anything. Had he wanted to surprise them? How long was he in town for? She had so many questions but she forced herself to ask them one at a time.

"Yeah, and how's Juilliard treating you?" Adam chimed in, shoving his hands back into his pockets as he looked at Rio.
