Aside from a few anxious stops for gas, the trip into Tennessee went relatively smoothly. As predicted, the large metropolitan areas were inaccessible with walkers and the haunting remnants of traffic jams. When it was safe, cars were raided for supplies and they were able to grab a small towable U-Haul trailer. Good for hauling scavenged supplies. Overall, it slowed the caravan down, but no one argued that it wasn't a sensible thing to do given they'd lost everything in terms of food and medicine.

They hit the Prentice Cooper State Forest in the late afternoon with plenty of time to find a suitable place to make camp. Their rugged vehicles made it possible to make their way off-road up Mullens Creek.

Silvia's words played through Merle's mind as they traveled to their destination but he made no commitment either way until they'd found themselves a place to settle. Again he knew people would be uneasy with the idea, especially since it had come with no transparency. Another shot he was calling on his own; but it made sense. They'd spent time and resources trying to find Waylon, especially Daryl, and leaving another unknown out there was dangerous. The man in question potentially had followers and access. He could cause harm to them, or those that Jericho's friends had willingly left behind.

Could it be a ruse? Sure. For Merle he could see the potential lie in anything being the seasoned liar that he was; but what he couldn't see was the gain in the lie. He'd already gathered Silvia was the kind who crunched opportunities against losses with ruthless scrutiny and he couldn't come up with any scenario where coming back to hurt their group made sense. After taking the time to carefully think it over, he agreed, deciding he tell the others after the pair had left.

Once the camp was set well on it's way to being set up, Alvaro returned to his Jeep to gather his weapons of choice for the mission to come. It would be him and Silvia, a pairing and hunt he welcomed. It gave his mind something to settle on , calmed and quieted it while he turned off his emotions with a comforting ease. Jericho may have wanted to be away from his former life, but Alvaro saw that loose end out there as a threat that needed to be eradicated in order for everyone to be free of that life.

Felix had left their company as soon as the caravan as soon as it had stopped, but Marcus had lingered around. Their ride together had been quiet on Alvaro's end and eventually Felix and Marcus had run out of things to chat about. Marcus had stuck around though, lingering about unassumingly and making the occasional snubbing comment about this or that as people tried to pull everything together.

Alvaro chewed on a toothpick while cleaning the long barrel of his rifle. "You're hovering. You want something. What is it." he asked in Marcus' general direction.

“You’re the only one who isn’t in a piss poor mood,” Marcus answered, though that wasn’t all. He knew what it looked like to be preparing for a move. He and his brother had done it to others in the beginning when they’d decided they had a better opportunity elsewhere. Marcus, without the company of his brother, had become one of the odd men out. He was a bit lost without someone to bounce off of. Even Logan had transitioned well into the group having an easygoing nature and proper social skills. Marcus, especially now, made people uncomfortable. Harlan wasn’t in the mood to talk. Travis was outright snappish. The two new guys regarded him with reservation. Toro spent most of his time with Carol, Silvia blew him off, and Daryl ignored him with a barely contained hostility. Merle, his usual source of companionship aside from his brother, seemed busy with too many other things. Shadowing Daryl, talking with the woman, arguments with Travis. He was forced to find new sources of entertainment and that lent itself to watching what all was going on that wasn’t being said. He picked up plenty.

“And I’m trying to figure out where you’re going now that it seems you’ve gotten exactly what you wanted,” he added. “Not giving up yet, are you?” Marcus was still of the mind that Alvaro was in love with Jericho. It fit, especially when he went somber after words were exchanged with the man. What had been said?

“The redneck phase usually passes. I mean.. look at Travis and Merle.” He was pretty sure that was falling apart, people returning to where they were comfortable. Merle back to woman, Travis back to his ex. “Someone with that sort of upbringing will always want to rebel a bit, try the locals, but it doesn’t usually stick. Give it some time.”

Daryl stayed nearby but gave Jericho space to figure out things with his children. He was back at Merle’s side, though clearly distracted. His older brother was keeping everything together despite some of the backlash received after some recent on the spot decision making. The situation grew more complicated, though he knew it was time to put heads together and decide on their future. More of that decision making that was going to piss the others off.

Felix stuck close to Angel. Like usual, Silvia thrust them into a new situation with little regard. She paved her own way and let the others figure it out. Safe, they were. Comfortable, no, but she’d only ever guaranteed their safety. He could be charming when he was in his element but the folks they were traveling with were worn thin. It was too exhausting to try, so he preferred the more lighthearted company of his ex.

“Most of them seem alright.. all things considered. That Marcus though.. he’s fucking strange. When we head out again, if it’s the same set up, I’m not getting stuck in the car with him again. I’ll tell Logan we’re switching places.” Alvaro was one thing. He was the sort of strange that had grown on him with time and understanding, but as such that position was full for him.

Alvaro looked up from his cleaned, partially assembled rifle and regarded Marcus for a moment. He looked back down without saying anything until he was finished. He looked up again and shook his head. There were so many points of misunderstanding in Marcus' words that he didn't know if he needed to break out a beat stick to hammer it into the man's head or a chalkboard to school him properly. Ultimately it didn't matter, his mind was on his mark mow and like a relentless hound, wouldn't be swayed from it and he wouldn't be distracted to other conversations. However, he had words for the other matter.

"I have one last job to do before I'm out of one. Flores got away." Alvaro spoke matter-of-factually. "Silvia and I are going to hunt him down and once we find him, I am going to exact every torture I that have ever learned on him. It will be my Mona Lisa, my Canon in D Major, my Casablanca, my swan song."

He looked back to Marcus with a shrug as he shouldered his weapon. "After that, I'm nobody. Poof. The ghost of a mountain village boy in the husk bloodstained man. Fin!" he embellished his final words with exclamation hands and a broken vaudeville smile. "Wanna come? Man fuckin' killed your brother after all. You deserve a poke or two at the ill fated bastard."

Once settled in a place that offered good resources for camping and cover, Merle stepped back to deal with Silvia and Daryl and let the details of camp set up fall to Travis. It wasn't so much a delegation thing as it was a give the man some space to do his thing thing and Merle fell back to work alongside his brother; setting up camp for what was becoming their own little tribe it seemed. "Least them kids speak English..." he commented with an air of casual conversation as he worked with his brother to set up a rudimentary structure from what the forest had to offer.

"I'm kind of glad I was on the bike, but don't get me wrong, it was no small amount of anxiety knowing it belonged to that guy." Angel was referring to Merle who never failed to instill fear and caution into those he first met. "Silvia seems to work well with him though; no small fucking feat."

The woman was shrewd and hard to impress and the fact that the two sides had come to a mutual agreement inside of ten minutes was a small miracle in Angel's eyes. He watched as the group began to splinter off and start trying to make something out of nothing. The brothers were on the south side of camp making a rustic survival shelter for themselves and the Rosales family. The others were to the north side of the camp having a little more difficulty sorting things out but seemingly following the loose lead of Travis. Nothing went quick for them, there were injuries and grief and barely half a heart between them.

Angel nudged Felix's arm. "Come on, we should offer our help."

He walked casually, hands stuffed into his pockets as he went to Travis, Felix in tow. Their first encounter hadn't been stunningly warm, but given the circumstances, Angel figured it had been the best the situation had to offer.

"Hi, sorry to interrupt, but Felix and I have some pretty extensive experience in the outdoor thing. We'd love to lend a hand if it'd be any help." Often time Felix had joined Angel on his travels, shared in his adventures, and it was only a handful of occasions where the trips had been a little more adventurous than Felix cared for. Together they knew a lot, and more importantly, knew how to function together, as well as with others, to get things done.

Alvaro’s words caught Marcus’ attention fully. He hadn’t met anyone so openly violent. In his quaint home growing up, it had been rather frowned upon. As well as his work environment, and just about anywhere really until the world had been chewed up and spit back out. It had festered into a deeply set and repressed rage within Marcus, his brothers death one more thing that had been filed away into that category. His expression initially was carefully controlled. Was this one of those social traps that could get him into trouble with these new people?

Alvaro’s words continued and Marcus was left to try and deconstruct the man he was speaking to. He was getting a better feel for him than most people. Refreshing that he didn’t seem to hide his base nature, and thoughtful to boot. Marcus smiled, a bright flash of exuberance as if the man had asked him on a date.

“Why, Alvaro, I thought you’d never ask."

Daryl looked over to Merle, unsure what to say about the topics of the kids. It had all happened so fast so he’d just hung back and observed, doing what needed to be done to ensure some measure of safety. Even fractured as they were, they all were moving with purpose. The new folks, Jericho’s people, had fallen right in alongside them. Everyone was too worn down to even consider picking fights. Daryl and Alvaro, for now, were giving one another space.

“You think this is gonna work?” Daryl asked Merle, regarding all the others. “We just gonna all go on our way together?”

Travis was operating on business mode, trying to keep his emotions as far from him as he could. Throwing himself into some sort of work usually did the trick. He was struck with a deep pang of loss when the two came to offer their assistance in the area he was usually so reliant on Wallis for. He stood blinking at then for a couple seconds too long, then nodded, looking back over to where Harlan was at, trying to make sure to keep it all in order.

“I’m trying to consolidate supplies to empty some of these vehicles. Probably the safest shelter for many of us.” Not everyone was used to roughing it quite like the Dixon's were. Travis preferred something more solid between him and the world out there, especially when he still had gunshots ringing in his ears.

“The U-haul is a mess.” Things thrown in haste as they drove through, but with some organizing, space was there to be made. “We can move the vehicles in, around whatever Merle is doing. Keep everyone in tight together.”

Alvaro shrugged again; not annoyed, not pleased, just neutral. "We're coming back after that. Far as I know, we intend to stay. Nowhere else to go and there's ties here. Our people back in Arkansas won't have us back. Not without the Padrino. That's just how it is in my world; or at least in my recently old world." He shrugged again. He seemed to be shrugging a lot. His mind still couldn't wrap around the fact that his life had changed completely at the drop of a few words. Jericho had done it three years ago. Left everything behind, the only difference was, he had something to look forward to; a new life he had imagined and planned. Alvaro had nothing like that and he became lost in his thoughts and expression as ambiguity and uncertainty of the situation began to feel overwhelming.

"Come on," he snapped back quickly. "Silvia is waiting. Silvia hates waiting."

Merle had been thinking much about the same thing. Nothing had been said concretely, but the new people had come this far with them and it didn't seem like they had much of anything else to fall back on. He looked at Daryl, lighting a cigarette and then handing it to his brother for a drag. "Think probably so. Don't know how it's gonna work, but I think that's how it's gonna go. Don't see that Silvia woman strikin' out on her own with Happy the Hit Man. 'Course, don't know how any peace is gonna come between you and him neither. But, like I said, least them kids speak English, dad." Merle chuckled. He taken easily enough to raising Casey, but he was amused at the prospect of his little brother taking on the parent mantle. "How's all that settin' with you, anyway, little brother?"

"Sure. Yeah. That makes sense," Angel agreed with a nod as his eyes were already scanning the various thought plans Travis had put forth. "Why don't you let Felix and I handle the U-Haul and supplies. We're both wilderness backpackers; we know how to make the most of every inch of space. That'll leave you freed up for the bigger decisions. If you have paper or some kind of notebook handy, we could do an inventory while we're repacking. You'll know what you've got and where it is."

Angel hadn't been the best or most motivated engineer as a student or in the field, but he still had the kind of mind that liked to work things out, make the most out of the least, leverage momentum and power. It was the same kind of thinking that he later applied to his adventures. On his Instagram, which he had loved so much before the end of the Internet, he always seemed glib and devil-may-care, but the truth of it was that every cliff face climbed, path tracked, river rafted, environment conquered had been riddled with problems to solve where making the most of everything was the only way to succeed.

“Happy for Jerry, of course,” Daryl answered, side eyeing his brother. “Damn near old enough that they can take care of themselves, especially takin’ into account the lifestyle they’re used to. Don’t think it’s gon be any different than keepin’ smart and stayin’ safe as a group. They have a father..” They probably didn’t need another and Daryl wasn’t going to step in and get presumptuous with authority.

“I’ll keep out of the way. One thing I know is family comes first. Jerry and them kids got enough to sort out without other folks steppin’ into the middle of it. Me and you got plenty goin’ on anyway, figurin’ out what we’re doin’ and where we’re all goin.”

Travis looked at them with consideration. Sandy had often taken inventory of household things. He’d gotten used to how she did things, but now everything had been tossed together. What hadn’t been burned or left behind. He motioned to one of the jeeps, searching for one of the notebooks he’d slid between the drivers door and center console. He flipped through pages, trying to find a clean one, glancing through drawn up plans to add to the garage. Plans started that would never come to completion now. With a stiffness he handed Angel the notebook, letting him sort out how he wanted to do it while he went off to worry over other things.

Silvia watched Alvaro, one of the American’s at his side.

“You’re making friends as well?” she asked, though she was less prepared when she learned they had gained him for their next excursion.

“¿Crees que es una buena idea? ¿Qué pasa si lo matamos?” They were already in questionable standing with current company. Getting one of theirs hurt or worse didn’t seem like the best idea, not to mention he complicated things. Could potentially slow them down, not to mention it wasn’t a mission for the faint of heart. Did they want anyone witnessing what they were truly capable of?

You think that’s a good idea? What if we get him killed?

Marcus didn’t need to understand Spanish to hear the doubt in her voice.

“I owe him a visit on behalf of my brother,” Marcus pointed out, defending his stance now that the offer had been made.

“Don’t you need to ask permission first?” Silvia shot back but Marcus only smiled, shifting his gaze over to the ones she was referring to.

“I don’t answer to the redneck brigade any more than you do.”

Alvaro had little to say and it seemed like Silvia and Marcus were hashing out the answers to the questions without his help. Either way, Marcus was going and Alvaro's only assistance was to usher them along into the Navigator to finish the conversation while putting miles behind them.

Harlan had been self-medicating for the entirety of the group's exodus out of Georgia and he only started coming to again after their new Tennessee camp had been pitched and the night was well under way.
He first became aware of the squeak of the leather interior of the back bench seat of the Jeep where he'd been laid out to sleep. The clothes he had been dressed in were loose and comfortable, a blanket was loosely draped over him and a pillow was cradled in his arms.

Things were still foggy for him and the first thoughts after those were of Wallis. He's the only one who would have done this. Where was he? Where had they gone and why weren't they in their room at the farm? He had had another epileptic episode?

He opened his eyes, blinked them a few times and the silhouette of man sleeping in the driver's seat came into view.

"Wallis...?" he asked, but as the man turned, he saw it was Travis and just as he was about to ask where Wallis was when it all came crashing back into his mind; the fire, Waylon, the funeral, and he was overcome in a swelling tide of tears.

"Travis..." he choked back the sobs in attempt to pull himself together. "Travis, where are we...what's happened?"

Travis watched the comings and goings. He watched the disorder, and he watched how poorly people were communicating. Decisions were being made on behalf of many without considerations. Hitting the road again wasn’t high on Travis’ list of things he wanted to do again, especially with the state of things. They were surrounded by questionable individuals, Harlan was a mess, and it was hard to say if more weren’t going to be coming to finish what was started. Merle was thinking of his and his own and it was time Travis did the same. He’d learned a lot. That had been the plan from the very beginning, when the Dixons had stuck around. He’d grown.

He was dividing things now. Things that would be useful to them and things that would be useful to the others. He gave the last couple salvaged notebooks to Angel. Perhaps he could sort them out and bring some of it to fruition. He was sitting in the front sit, it laid back just a bit, using a flashlight to look over a map. He frowned when he heard Harlan call out for someone who wasn’t there, reached for his hand, and waited to see if he was going to fall apart before starting.

“How long will your medication last you?” Travis asked, trying to figure out how small of a window he had.

“We ought to be somewhere secure before we run out completely. That’s not going to happen at this rate, not with what I’m hearing in the trickle down. I’m not up for any serious hoofing it right now, and you certainly aren’t.” Travis crawled between the front seats into the back, taking the map and flashlight with him as he arranged himself with Harlan in the back seat. Encasing his arms around him, he tapped the spot on the map with the edge of the flashlight.

“My old airplane hanger. Mine might still be there.” A pause. “Then we can go anywhere. Scope it out from the sky. Land wherever we want, find somewhere quiet.. comfortable. I don’t think aviation gas would be hard to come by. Not like you see too many out flying anymore.”

Travis' questions and conversation were a welcome distraction from the thoughts that were creeping into Harlan's head, but that conversation came with a lot of surprises and questions.

"I...I have a few weeks, I think." Harlan shuffled his position to allow Travis to move to the back seat with him. More than the conversation, the closeness felt good and he rested snugly in Travis' comforting embrace. "I just stuffed all I could into my bag before..." He let the rest of the explanation drop short. No one needed a recounting of the recent events so soon after the fact. It was still too fresh and raw for either of them.

He looked at the map as Travis pointed an explained and for a moment he thought he was hearing Travis proposing they leave. As Travis went on, he realized that was exactly what was saying; not the group, but them alone. Travis pointed at the map painting a picture of new goals and potentials that when they filtered through Harlan's mind past the grief and fear, sounded like a dream, a very appealing dream.

"We could leave the south?" Harlan was a northern boy, Wisconsin; the heat and humidity of Georgia exasperated everything it seemed. What would a change in geography mean for them? For the horrors they faced? There was one question that that stood glaring before all others though, what about the others?

"Are you saying...you want to leave the group?"

“They’ll be fine without us.. They’ve been figuring it out.. making plans that don’t sound that appealing to me. After what all just happened.. I don’t see it getting better. Only more dangerous and unstable. I can’t.. do it anymore. You can’t. Not when we have other options.” Before, the idea had been a fanciful dream. Not an option for their group of four, and no easy task. Now, he knew more of the sort of thing he was made of. It wasn’t that much longer of a trek.

“I’ll miss them.. but this feels like the fork in the road. They’re going to succeed one way, and we’re going to do better going the other direction. The longer we tag along, the less of an option this is for us. In a few weeks, when you run out of your meds, we don’t need to be on the road.. fighting lingerers and whatever is going to come creeping up on us from Georgia.” Travis turned the flashlight off and set the map down, settling in.

“I’m not about to follow a straight man all over the country when it isn’t the safe sensible thing to do,” Travis said, speaking a little more softly. “I’m not young and stupid.” As romantic as the notion seemed, he was too logical for that.

The proposal at first seemed unthinkable. Leaving the group. Their friends. Travis was right about one thing, the group would survive, even with the loss of a doctor. They had Toro, Jerry, Daryl, and Merle that made up the very capable backbone of the group. Could they leave Jerry? He was an original, the man who'd saved his life so early on. Over time he'd become part of a new group, the Dixon family; married out of the original four into a new core.

The feelings were sentimental, but Travis' facts painted a picture crisper picture of truth. When his meds ran out, he'd be in danger of seizures again. The stresses of his loss and of a nomadic lifestyle would compound the issue. He could step outside of himself and see himself as a patient and if they had a better alternative, he needed to take it.

"How far are we?" He could have calculated the miles from the map but he knew Travis would have already done that from several angles. "Can we make it on our own?" Travis seemed sure of it and if Harlan knew one thing about Travis was that he put everything through the paces before taking risks. He felt safe with the decision even if a little apprehensive about the breakup itself. But things would never be like they had been again. So many people were gone. The new makeup was more violent and the roads they were choosing were equally as rough. Travis was right. He wouldn't make it and he'd be a burden on the way.

He nodded and a certain sense of relief accompanied it. It was easier to believe in Travis because he knew his friend truly had his best interest at heart. "Have you thought of what you're going to say to the others?"

“Three-hundred or so miles. It really depends on if we have to backtrack and take a different route. Either way, we’ll make it,” Travis answered. If safety meant longer travel time, that’s what they would do. A long day trip was a much better alternative than the unknown. It would give them a comfortable amount of time to settle somewhere. He wasn’t sure what they’d find when he got there, but he knew it would be worth it and he was familiar with the area.

“It’s flat.. open.. and I know where someone would have hidden the keys.” The next question gave Travis pause. “No.. but I’ll handle it. Let someone know where we’re going. Maybe one of these days we’ll cross paths again, but in order to do that we have to do what works for us at this current time. Don’t worry about it right now. Get some more rest.” Travis was going to follow the same advice. Now, having told Harlan, the nagging was more quiet but it returned full force with the rising of the sun. Now with a plan in place, he was antsy to get the hard part over with and be on his way. A life that he remembered, at least remnants of it, were out there. He just had to go find them, for his sake and Harlan’s.

The first one he told was Toro. He figured he’d be the least reactive. He could get the details out of the way; tell them where he was going and as much of his plan he had formulated to that point.

“If you ever make it up that way, I’ll leave a note as to where we went. We’re taking one of the jeeps. Have you all decided on a destination yet or are you just going to keep going as far as the land will take you?” There was no uncertainty in Travis’ words. He’d made up his mind and would stand behind his decision, no matter what was to follow as people became aware. He wasn’t worried for himself, or the others. His own confidence had grown and the remaining group was more than capable.

After hearing Travis' one-eighty in personal direction, Toro pondered over his plan for a few thinking minutes before responding. The decision seemed quick, but in the case of Travis, Toro knew the man had to have been pondering it for awhile. Changes had been swift and sweeping, and if it had been anyone else, he may have questioned the sincerity of the emotions behind it. Travis didn't think with his heart, though, and Toro didn't linger on any notion that he may before giving his objective assessment.

"No. No decisions have been made, or even any conversations." he could understand what he presumed to be frustration of Travis' part for that aspect. "The apple cart been pretty disrupted and it's really hard to say how it'll all pan out. Can't say I'm particularly happy with it. You at least kept a sense of the need for togetherness with everyone. Now we've lost half of those people, added unknowns, and there's a division forming. My humble opinion is that this going to be a shitshow for awhile before it gets better. Honestly, I'd be considering the same, but I don't think Carol would get behind a proposal to leave. Even though Daryl seems set, there's ties." He shrugged; an indication that he was staying because he felt she wouldn't leave if he asked her.

"Mountains are still a good idea, so I imagine we'll either cut back east to the Smokies or maybe head for the Ozarks. Either way, we may run into you, or at least where you've been. If you leave directions in the hangar and we run through that way, we'll find them. They supply split looks good as long as you think you have enough. I do have a little more surplus ammunition if you think you need it. It'll just be you two out there and if when the doctor is a little more recovered, he really needs to be taught how to handle a firearm effectively.

He paused, his mind going to less tactical things and more social things. "Are you planning on an announcement? I'd be fine to just relay your information to the group. I doubt you want a trashfire to break out when all you want to do is be on your way and I know none of us here want to deal with a blowout breakdown. It'd be best if you just let me tell the others after you've headed out."

“I’m not going to make an announcement, but I will have a few words with some. I think it’ll be worse if I don’t. If someone had done that to me.. without a word, I’d be tempted to go out kick their ass just one last time just for the insult.” It was obvious who he was talking about and this was different than the time he’d left before, when he just needed some space. This was much more permanent.

“Jerry will understand and Harlan will want an exchange.. it was just us four for long a while. And Merle.. he’s not any more sentimental than I am. He’ll he alright, even if he puffs up a bit. He has his own priorities, same as me. I would like some extra ammunition if you have some to spare, but our style isn’t to go blowing into places. We’ll be discreet and selective. I’ll teach Harlan what alI know, but we’ll be alright.” Most of it was already in place. They were packing light. His plane was small, and the lighter they kept it the more confident he was flying it without his usual co-pilot.

Travis found Jericho next, asking him over to the jeep before doing his best to explain what their intentions were. If Jerry hadn’t put together this was some sort of ‘goodbye’, then the hug he pulled the Mexican man into, something very non-Travis like, was the best indicator. He left Jerry and Harlan right after, going to pull Merle from his current distractions. When they had some distance between them and the others he laid it out but didn’t go into details. If Merle wanted to know, he could talk to Toro about it later.

“I won’t live like this anymore. Harlan can’t.” It was just how it was, no emotion behind his voice, but then he smiled, reaching for Merle’s arm.

    “It’s been wild.”

Good memories. Crazy nights. Deep down, Travis understand that it would all come to an end one day. They’d each go their own way, find their own thing. He leaned in to kiss Merle with a fondness he still possessed but it was different than what it had been. They both needed to move on.

    “Take care of one another.”

Jerry returned from the meeting sad and distress and had Arturo translate to Daryl for him what had happened. Shortly after, Merle rejoined his family and verified the same information; taking it in stride, but peeved under the surface. He had a lot of thoughts about the issue, and some genuine anger, but rather than make a big show of it he let it simmer just under the surface. If they wanted to go off on their own because they 'just couldn't handle it' anymore, so be it.

He understood the concern about Harlan, that was valid, but there had been no attempt or even an attempt of an attempt to work some other solution out.

"Son of a bitch. You know this is because I was callin' the shots. Now he's taken hissy to a new level. Truth is, someone had to make decisions while they all was out-of-sorts. Idiot...Ain't gonna waste my time tryin' to put sense in that head anymore; just feel bad for the doc and for the rest of us who gonna miss him. We'll be alright; we got fighters now."

Toro sought out time with Carol after the word started getting around, speaking candidly about how he felt about things; how he saw the very real potential for power struggle and further divide if things were left to fall together unattended. He sought her perceptions and insight on the dynamic shake down that was bound to happen; asking if she felt they should somehow try to exert any kind of influence over it, or just roll with it as they had been. Being on the farm was one thing, but they were about to head out on a much bolder and more dangerous adventure.

Travis finished loading up and off he went, forlorn but also hopeful. It felt like the right thing to do and after going over it in his head a hundred times they were too close not to go for it. He left the radio on for the duration it took to get out of range, listening to see if any further plans were being set so he might know where the group was headed. After that, contact would be lost and it’d be less likely they’d cross paths again.

“If we had any sort of sense we’d be following Travis’ example..” Carol mumbled, though knew it wasn’t possible. Daryl wouldn’t leave and including come of the others meant including all of the others. Which put them right back at the same problem. She looked down to her leg and huffed. Her injury wasn’t what worried her.

“I don’t know if losing those two will mean great things for us now. They buffered some of the hard to get along with personalities.. helped unify us. Now we have a mess on our hands and several unknowns. I’m not getting into the middle of it right now, unless I have to, so we’re just going to have to see where it all lands.”

Felix had picked up on some of the comings and goings. Alvaro, Silvia, and one American gone first. In the night without a word, and then two of the other Americans left more or less discreetly that morning. He’d opted to try and explain what his people were up to, interrupting the quiet conversation between Toro and Carol. He knew it all seemed shady and Silvia was prone to doing whatever she wanted without though to inform anyone else. Mav wasn’t talking, like usual, keeping close to the kids. Felix wasn’t sure if he didn’t know what was going on or he just wasn’t saying but some things could be interpreted on his own.

“I don’t feel like those we’ve come here with are making the best impressions on our behalf,” Felix started, nodding towards Angel. “They don’t tell me anything either, but I can guess. If there was some sort of attack, they probably went back to retaliate. Those two wouldn’t stand for that sort of thing, but why they took your American buddy with them, I don’t really know. I’m fairly certain they’ll be back.. They don’t keep us informed of things because Angel and I weren’t involved with their world.” Another gesture towards Angel. “He’s associated with Silvia by marriage and I’m associated by association.”

Daryl looked between Jericho and his brother. Jerry wore his sadness openly. Merle processed it in another way and he couldn’t tell to what degree he was actually bothered; just that he was.

“Might’a been he was plannin’ this when he got all quiet.. Probably why we hadn’t heard much from him.” Versus his usual in your face approach. He’d ask later, but not in front of the others, if Merle was alright with it all. Travis hadn’t been Daryl’s favorite person but he and Merle had something for a bit there. Would that be the last of it? Just an experimentation phase for his older brother?

It was the first time Toro had gotten to speak to any of the new additions, though he had been watching them. He believed Felix when he told them they were only involved by association. The cartel people had a definite structure and order that those two didn't seem to fit into. They weren't sloppy civilians either; having demonstrated some skills when they took over the supplies organizing the day before.

"I thought as much. I'm Toro, this is Carol." he introduced them and continued. "Travis took Harlan to some place safer. He's prone to seizures and everything that happened in that attack has left him too vulnerable to move on with us."

Toro was generous with the information he had as Felix had been so. If they were going to forge a new group, they needed to forge a new way of running it. "Everything has become a coin toss, it seems. You and your friend seem capable, I saw how you took care of that supply mess. What's your background? I'm an American Marine. I was stationed in the Carolinas when everything happened."

Merle shrugged off any further speculation about it. It didn't matter. "What's done is done. We should hunt. Lost out meat stocks. If we're goin' back on the road, we need somethin'. Come on." He was ready for some time in the woods away from the others. He and Daryl could talk more if they were so inclined, but meat was a good idea and time off would be time to get over his anger maybe.

As they picked up to leave, Arturo translated to Jerry what was going on and then split off himself; heading over to join the small group of adults who were talking by the Hummer. "They'll be back," he interjected. "At least long enough to get Mav. I doubt Alvaro will leave my father now, he's always been loyal but he's changed a lot, he's hard to predict now, but maybe being back with my father will straighten that out if my father will back off some of this guilt he seems to want hold on to." Arturo spoke with a level-headed practicality that belied his years and fresh face.

“Mexican-born. Barber there, but Angel and I were off traveling for a while. Adventure seeking.. I guess we finally got what we were really looking for.” Now it just didn’t end and he could do without the unpredictability that was Silvia and Alvaro. Arturo headed over, confident that they would be returning. Felix was going to pave the way regardless. If Silvia was only returning for a short while, he wanted to have options. He’d been drug around long enough without them.

Carol was looking them over but kept her opinions to herself for the time being. Now wasn’t the opportune time to pry, especially when it was clear they were trying to put their best foot forward.

Logan wasn’t being filled in the goings on. He tried to catch the hunters but he was too slow to realize what they were doing, and next he turned around they were gone. That left him to finding the odd jobs around the little campsite. Angel, the new addition he rode in beside for a short while was off on his own, so he opted to start there, offering his assistance. Trying to figure out where everyone had gone and why no one seemed concerned about any of it.

It had been a while since he and his brother had gone out hunting together. The area was unfamiliar but as a result some of the wildlife had gotten less savvy to hunter-antics over time. He felt confident they’d be bringing something back to the others with just a little bit of patience. He watched Merle, still trying to gauge him.

“You fine with all that? You was ready to be done with it anyway, right?” Daryl figured it was easier this way, rather than Merle moving on and them having to deal with the fights that were likely to follow. That was how he figured it was about to go. A convenience sort of thing for Merle, but things were changing now.

Toro nodded to Felix and Arturo. Both were being forthcoming with information and both were surprising with the skills they touched on. He spoke to Arturo first as he was the last to speak. "I figured it might be something like that. It seems he's taken some hefty measures to leave that his CV."

"You mean lie. He's lied about pretty much everything to you guys by not saying anything." Arturo added and Toro shrugged.

"I'm sure it's more complicated than that. He's come through when we needed him to, but honestly, we've all got ghosts but our skills are more important. Do you think Alvaro will come back around?"

"Hard to say. I mean, before papi left, he'd never shown a crack. He was a fixture; steady as stone even after they spent a year torturing him. He's hardly recognizable now. I think losing dad, having the Family fall apart, and leading us all here from Mexico sort of flipped him out. He needs to be brought back under control because he's dangerous otherwise." The boy could see that didn't sit well with Toro, Carol, or Felix. "I know, you probably think I'm just a dumb kid. My dad was never the 'Last Rose'. I was. When he left, they started grooming me to be the man he couldn't be. I'm not dumb; I know and understand these people probably better than he is willing to try to. To him Silvia is just a passing acquaintance and Alvaro is a friend. He can't see either of them clearly. Or me."

Toro nodded again, a quick discreet look to Carol whom he knew was quietly taking it all in. His gaze fell on Felix again. "Outdoor adventurers?" He smiled with a nod. "That means you know a lot about survival, camping, and all the wilderness skills that make all this much more possible." It was an incredible skill set to have joining them. It meant that the majority of the group knew how to survive on little means. "Are you both good with first aid too? With the doctor gone, I'm pretty much the only one with any formal training."

Angel was putting together a substantial breakfast for everyone. After the recent events, it was something they all needed. Some people were healing, some were at wits end. Nourishment would help. Logan joined him and he briefly introduced himself again. Pleasant, a smile even in down times.

"Ha! I try to get some answers out of you and it's all tight lipped vague shit from you. Now you want to ask me love life questions?" Merle genuinely chuckled as he gave his brother a shove to the back of the head. "You're a nosy cuss. Yeah, it's like that. I'm fine with it. Convenience of it is gone, weren't nothin' to keep up with. He's got doc to think 'bout now and I got you. Suddenly y'all married and sproutin' kids all over the place. That is what ya are now, right? Hitched? Or you just a kept man with all that bling your finger. Or don't you know? You probably don't know." he snickered.

Felix’s eyes snapped to Arturo. It wasn’t his intention to throw Alvaro under the bus or to bare all. Some things were better left omitted unless there came a need but Arturo wasn’t holding back in the slightest. Of course, he wouldn’t have ever had a need to be cautious. No one was put at ease by the words.

“He does alright if Silvia is with him. She knows how to keep him from going around half-cocked. He’s only dangerous.. to some. Traveling with him for the time that I have, I slept better at night with him around than when he wasn’t. You need some sort of edge to get by nowadays. He just had a little more of that than most.. Same with Silvia.” They’d frustrated him with their constant whiplash with plans.. but now they’d done what they set out to do. Maybe they could both relax for a bit.

“Yes though. I know a thing or two about survival, some basic first aid. A few things programmed based on past mistakes and firsthand experience." He tapped his temple. "We never took the tourist guide options but made our own way. We've had to be adaptable to a lot of the things thrown at us. I know my way around a gun when the need comes up. My father taught me how to protect the barbería. Silvia has helped to refine that a bit more; made me a more confident shot. I’m just not the first guy to throw myself into the middle of something.” Which was why he stayed in the SUV, watching before stepping out. Silvia and Alvaro had short fuses towards violence. Felix was capable of violence, his fuse was just longer.

“You don’t go wandering the obscure places in foreign countries without some sense and skill.” They were not average naive tourists but nor were they cartel thugs.

“And you’re good at turnin’ it back around on someone else so you don’t gotta talk about your own shit,” Daryl pointed out. “I don’t know what it’s like. Just is what it is and it probably ain’t gonna change.” He was secure in it, whatever it was, without the need to label it. Hitched probably wasn’t quite right. They were free as could be, but free together, especially now.

“If I were a kept man I wouldn’t be out here, now would I?” Trekking through unknown woods to bring dinner home. “No such thing anymore.”
