It was nearly 10pm when Vanya finally got back to his apartment from his closing shift job at a restaurant down town. He had spent all morning and all afternoon running around town teaching kids how to play the flute and then when 5pm struck he raced down town to a bustling restaurant where he worked as a host. He was tired down to his bones and his head was killing him. As he arrived to his door he fumbled with the keys just to get it open while he spoke to the air, his Russian accent slipping through his lips.

"God, please let me sleep tonight. I just need six hours of sleep to get me through tomorrow."

Once his door was unlocked he stepped inside before quickly kicking the door shut behind him and dropping his bag. He carried his flute case in his other hand and placed it more ceremoniously on his desk. Without ever turning the lights on, Vanya walked into his bedroom and fell into his single bed with a thump and a heavy sigh before immediately falling asleep.

The apartment Vanya was staying in was old and not exactly the nicest of places. It was run down, in need of maintenance, and cheap. He'd had to move here when his family suddenly disappeared from town and saddled him not only with the fees he was paying to go to music school, but their own debt they had garnered and never told him about. As a result he had also been forced to drop out of school and take on extra work. If that wasn't bad enough things were just about to get worse.

Near the back of the apartment complex where the generator was kept, there seemed to be some electrical trouble. Without proper maintenance, the wires were frayed and short circuiting. No one was even around to see the fuse box catch alight and start spreading to the rest of the building. Thankfully the fire alarms still worked. Unfortunately the first floor was already engulfed by the time they went off.

Vanya groaned and was pulled from his sleep by the obnoxious warning bell and when the increased heat and smell of smoke reached him he immediately was shocked back to wakefulness. he got to his feet and stumbled to his door. As he opened it he could see the light of the flames coming up the stairs at the end of the dark hall. The power was out and they were the only source of light. He ran back inside his room, grabbing his flute and getting ready to escape.

Aren dribbled the basketball a few times before shooting up towards the hoop. His friend blocked it easily, taking back the ball and racing towards the other side of the court. He laughed and shook his head, he never was any good at basketball, but its what the guys always wanted to play, so why not? His friend, Tyler, threw his hands up in defeat, "You always let the ball go, Aren!"

Aren shrugged, "I warned you at the beginning of all of this that I wasn't any good. You still insisted that I play." He laughed, running to the end of the court where the other members of his chosen team were trying to block the other team from getting a basket.

This is how it's been for Aren since volunteering for the fire house. Sundays was basketball day and cookout day, but since Will, another member of the team, forgot to buy the food again, they had to settle for delivery pizza. Today wasn't all bad though. Aren was finally able to finish some of the work he had started on his house, and the guys were all in a good mood. Even Jessica, the only female fire fighter they had on their team. She was one of guys though. In fact, she was the one that took the damn basketball. She was small and skinny, which made her hard to stop during the game. As the game came to a close, the pizza arrived. "Finally!" Tyler exclaimed, paying the driver. "Food is here!"

The rest of the team high-fived and put the ball down. They gathered around the lawn table and took their share of the pizza. They were big men, which meant that four pizzas was just barely enough to feed the team of ten. As they ate, the laughed and talked about their home lives and their day jobs. Aren would share with them how far he was in his novel and how working at a gas station was the last thing he thought he was going to be doing. But that was why he loved the firehouse. It gave him a sense of purpose. The only thing that was never discussed was family life among the team; if they did that, they wouldn't be able to do what was best for each other in a time of crisis. Plus, it was just something that was never brought up.

As they evening went on, and the pizza was finished, they began another game only to be interrupted by the sound of the fire alarm. "Shit." Tyler said. The team dropped the ball and immediately raced to get their gear on. Aren was one of the drives so he started the trucks up before heading to his locker. His uniform stood, hung and ready to go, shoes placed squarely in front so they were easy to get on. In a matter of seconds the team was ready. Yelling out order, Jessica assigned the men to their trucks and they peeled out, sirens blazing. The fire was the old apartment complex. The county police had complained about this place being out of code, but no one seemed to have done anything about it. All that mattered was getting the renters out of there.

It was a matter of minutes before everyone on Vanya's floor was awake and everyone was panicking. They were all shouting at each other to gather up important things: children, pets, money, keepsakes. Everything else had to be left behind. Baby a had everything he really needed with him already which included his wallet, his phone, and his flute. Especially his flute. Without his flute he had nothing and it wasnt like he could afford another one.

The one elevator in the building was out and even if it wasn't they weren't supposed to use it anyway. No one ever wanted to besides. Of course this all meant that the stairs were crowded with people, pushing and shoving to get down to the first floor. It became evident to them that when tenants from the first and second floors started coming up that it wasn't an option.

Luckily down on the second floor some but not all of the tenants were able to escape through their windows using make shift ropes to climb down. Of course the flames from the first floor were quickly burning up the hall of the 2nd floor. The tenants from the 3rd floor tried to do the same, including Vanya. Unfortunately he didn't have enough to even reach the second floor. By this point smoke was starting to fill the building. On the bright side, above the roar of the fire on the floor below, they could all hear the sirens of the fire trucks pulling up to the building.

The building was engulfed in a hot inferno as they pulled up. People were running out of the entrance, some scaling the side of the building, some waving their arms out of the windows to get fresh air. His eyes scanned the faces of the ones that did escape. They were covered in ash. The fire must have been very sudden for everyone was frightful. They barely had any time to escape. Without hesitating any longer, the firefighters jumped of their trucks and instantly began to work. Aren heard the hose zip from its wheel as Will raced to the fire hydrant. In a loud pop, water began to shoot out of the hose from the hydrant and onto the fire as Aren turned on the pump. He jumped out to help scared civilians as the other truck set up their hose. Cops pulled up a little bit after them and started to barricade the yard from onlookers. It seemed the whole neighborhood wanted to watch.

"The building is going to collapse!" Tyler yelled, looking at the bottom of beginning to bend. "We have to get everyone out of the way!"

"Do we know if there is anyone left inside?" Aren called out. The last thing he wanted to do was leave someone to die in there.

"We don't know. We don't have much time!" Jessica held her hose firmly to her side as the water pumped out. It was clearly not a wood fire--sparks began to fly out from the bottom of the building and the hoses weren't doing their job was well as they should have been. The fire had to be contained the best it could be, but citizen safety was their number one concern. Aren and another team member began to shout for the tenets to follow them behind the trucks. The building was going to collapse in a matter of minutes.

Vanya could feel tears trickling down his face. He wasn't sure if it was due to the heat, the smoke or his crushing fear. Maybe it was all three. He didn't want it to end this way. He coughed harshly as the smoke reached his lungs and his heart pounded against his ribs. He went to the window once more and opened it, hoping to get some fresh air and breath. Smoke bellowed out from his window and he coughed once more, leaned against the frame as he clutched his case to his chest. His face was smudged with ash carried by the smoke and his straight auburn hair was curling in the intense heat.

Looking up he saw the fire fighters and all of the other tenants who had escaped getting a safe distance away. This was his last chance to get out of here alive. Still holding the case with one hand he stretched the other one out and waved it to get attention. He tried shouting but his voice came out hoarse and quite. He quickly cleared his throat and tried again.

    "Help! Please help me!"

He hoped to god that someone, anyone would hear him. He didn't want to die here. Not like this. The heat was only getting worse and even without looking he knew that the fire was reaching the third floor. It was now or never.

Aren shouted over the roar of the fire for everyone to step back. Jessica and Tyler kept up their assualt in the building with the water, hoping to lessen the smoke in the air. As he did so, another sound seemed to pick up on the wind. A voice. He turned around to the building listening in. He heard it again. The voice. "Someone else is in the building!" He looked over at Will who was signaling for more people to move back.

"What?" Will looked at the building. "It's going to collapse!"

"There is someone else still trapped in there!" He turned, looking into the blaze. He took a step forwards. His eye trying to catch sight of anyone. He could still hear the screaming. He took a few more steps forwards.

"Aren, no! It's too late! Get back!" Jessica demanded.

"Aren, you can't! Get back!" Will turned and moved quickly towards him. Just as he was about to run towards the building, Aren felt strong arms around him and the fire begin to CRACK as the building shook. Almost as if in slow motion, Aren watched the building buckle under itself and start to collapse. He was pulled back as the smoke and heat engulfted the yard. Spectators gasped raced backwards, trying to escape the black smoke. The firefighters started towards the trucks, trying to get away as well. Aren pushed Will off of him, falling to his knees. He knew there was someone else in the building!

Vanya continued to shout desperately, screaming at this point. Someone had to hear him, they just had to. His vision began to blur with both smoke and tears. He could feel the building shaking beneath his feet. It was too late. He knew it. He was going to die. . He was still leaning out the window when the first support broke and the building started to tilt.

    "No no no no!"

He screamed into the air as if begging for some unseen power to make it all stop and get him to safety. He gripped tightly at the window frame with his free hand, his knuckles turning white. The building was crashing down beneath him and the flames and smoke only got closer. He felt like he couldn't breath and as the ground came up to meet him. His surrounds shook and he stumbled, with only the frame of the window to keep him standing. Finally the third floor came down and he let out a scream, a desperate cry as he fell and was cut beneath the falling ceiling.

For a moment everything went dark.

When he started to come to, he was just thankful to be alive, but the heat still surrounded him and he was buried from his waist down. He tried to move and whimpered and held back a cry at a painful jolt through his leg. another tear rolled down his face. He still had a chance. He called out as loudly as he could in a hoarse voice, sobbing out the words.

    "Help...please...I need help!"

Aren watched in pain as the building fell, his ears begging to hear for the scream again. He just knew there was someone else in the building, and they didn't try to help them. He turned to glare at Will. "We killed someone!" Will shook is head, and looked away. Jessica, having put away the hose and reassured that the civialians were safe, went up to Aren.

"We will be looking for survivors once we know that's safe. Get up, do your job, and make sure that the trucks are secure. The ambulance needs a way in and your truck is blocking it." She snapped.

This snapped Aren away from his emotions. She was right. The survivors are what's important right now. They will have to search the building later. He stood and began to his duty to the people. After about ten minutes or so, the ambulance came through and EMT's began to help the hurt. Tyler yelled for a search team, and Aren was the first to go. Without hesitation, he and Tyler started towards the sightly still standing building. Aren went for the collapsed rubble. The charred remains of many people's lives scattered the blacken stone. The wind picked up, helping the smoke to disappate. Looking up and down the entirety of the building seemed rather easy for a building that just fell. Tyler concluded that he did not find anyone one.

Aren pierced his lips together. He wasn't crazy--there was someone yelling for help earlier. He hadn't come across a body yet, so maybe they were able to escape. He turned and started to head back to the trucks with Aren when his stopped. There it was. A soft, tired voice, trying to call out for help. Whipping around Aren began to search the rubble closer. "Someone IS in here, damnit!" He yelled at Tyler. As if on cue, he saw it. Auburn colored hair, and a pale man's face, looking out for anyone to help. "We have a survivor!" He yelled. He began to gently move the debris away from this man, "We're here. We got you." He kept saying.

He looked at this man who miraculously survived the fire and collapse. Aren kept staring--a little too long. Shaking his head, he returned to the task at hand. Tyler and Jessica ran to his side and began to help Aren move the stone away from this man. Paramedics came instantly with oxygen and a stretcher. They hoisted this man up and brought him to the ambulance.

When Vanya heard the voices of the search party he continued to call out. He was starting to lose his voice at this point. Finally, he saw the figure of a fire fighter coming closer and he reached out towards him, his other hand refusing to let go of his one treasure. The tears streaming down his face were tears of joy, and they left little trails down his face where they cleared away the ash. He was going to be okay.

He remained still as Aren and the other fire fighters started moving the debris off of him, but he didn't dare attempt to stand, not after the shooting pain he'd felt earlier. he had a feeling that his leg might be broken. He let himself be picked up and carried ever so gently over to the paramedics. When they put the mask on him and started administering oxygen he had never been so grateful for a breath of fresh air. They had tried to take his flute away from him, but he refused to let it go. It was all he had. Eventually they let him keep it as they continued their examination of him. They determined that he likely did have a fracture in his right leg and they put a splint on it before getting him into the ambulance and transporting him to the hospital. Before he went he looked towards the fire fighter that had found him and mouthed a silent "thank you." He owed that man his life. If he could he would try and make it up to him once all of this blew over.

After a short drive he arrived at the hospital and it was then that it dawned on him that all of this was going to come with a pretty big bill to pay for. One that he really couldn't afford right now. Still it wasn't like he could forgo care and walk around with a broken leg. He had no choice. Thankfully it was only a hairline fracture. The doctors were saying it was a miracle he had gotten out of the fire without any serious burns. He took his blessings where he could get them. They put his leg in a cast and kept him on oxygen for a while. He would need to be closely monitored for the next 24 hours in case any ash or smoke caused a reaction and blocked off his airways. That would mean staying over night in the hospital. Vanya didn't mind. It wasn't like he had anywhere else to go.

Aren smiled at the man who mouthed thank-you and watched as the paremedics took over and the ambulance begin to take him. He smiled, and ran a hand through his hair as the took off his helmet. The police and the other fire fighters began to clean up and baracade the premises. He motioned to his team to get on the truck so they could make their report before it became too late. The whole fire lasted about an hour and a half. He was tired and ready for rest, but his mind kept going back to the man he saved.

There was something about him-the way he held onto his case, the way he fought to keep it close to himself. He was interesting. As they drove to the fire station and unloaded everything, he pondered to himself how appropriate it would be to go there and check on the patients. He had never done it, nor had he heard of anyone doing it, but it was something that he wished to do.

As the night came to a close and the team left for the night, he decided to take a swing into the hospital just to make sure that everything went okay. As he walked into the emergency room, he noticed many people in the waiting room. A lot of them seemed ill, and others seemed to be friends or family of the fire victims. He shook his head. His family must be here. Why would he care about a figherfighter coming to see him?

"Can I help you?" a Nurse asked, coming up to him.

He struttered a little and stood awkwardly. "I just wanted to see if a recent patient that came from a burned down apartment complex is okay. I was one of the firefighers that rescued him."

The nurse gave him a genuine smile and shook her head, "I'm sorry. All of our trauma patients cannot be seen right now. Please come back tomorrow, maybe."

He nodded and thanked her before heading home for the night.

Vanya wasn't expecting any visitors. Why would he? Anyone who would have come to visit him skipped town months ago, leaving him in his current situation. He sighed softly to himself, taking in a deep breath as he tried to think more positively. One one hand he would have medical bills to pay. On the other he didn't have to pay rent anymore. It was not the most uplifting thought, but it was something at least. He figured it would be best if he tried to get some sleep. He could contact his students in the morning and let them know that he'd be taking a day off this week and that they should keep practicing. He'd have to call in at work too. For the first time all night Vanya let go of his flute, setting it on the bedside table and let himself fall asleep.

The next morning, Vanya woke up well rested. Knowing it was well past when he would have normally woken up to get ready he felt a bit relieved. It had been a while since he had a proper day off. Of course it was hard to really say he was taking a vacation day when he was spending it recovering in a hospital. A nurse came into his room and seeing that he was awake, brought him a meal to have for a late breakfast. It was a light healthy meal that Vanya actually enjoyed. He took him time sipping tea and eating individual orange wedges.

The doctor eventually came to join him and sat down before he started going through all of his medical procedures and inevitably his expenses. It wasn't as bad as he had expected, but it would take him at least a month, maybe two before he could pay off the procedure for his leg. Even with a broken leg, Vanya was already considering working more than he already was. It was odd that he thought he could actually pull it off. He was already dead on his feet before, how could more work make it better?

The morning finally came and Aren was up before the sun. He almost always did a run before working out--the crisp air cleared his head and had him ready for work or being at the fire station for the day. This morning though, his mind was still on the man he saved from the fire. He didn't know why he wanted to see him so badly, but he felt that he had to. He had gotten ready fairly quickly for the day and since it was another day off, he went to the hospital around noon. He walked up to the counter and gave the nurse a smile. "Hello. I was here last night looking for a young man that was brought here from the apartment fire last night. He was carrying a case with him."

The nurse looked him up and down and started to type on her the computer. "Are you related to him?" She looked him.

He scratched the back of his head and cleared his throat, "I'm sorry, I-I was the fire fighter that found him."

The nurse gave him a smile and then nodded to the hallway, "Last room on the left." She then went back to typing.

He thanked her and headed to the door. Taking a deep breath, he asked himself if they was what he wanted to do. He knocked on the door, hoping that he was allowed in.

Vanya was lying in bed, resting as he looked over the papers describing medical expenses. He sighed heavily and lifted his head to look up at the ceiling, placing the papers in his lap. It wasn't that bad, but a set back was a set back. Not to mention he basically had nothing but what was here in his room with him. He was just thankful he got his flute out of the fire along with him. He still had a way to earn a living. He should also still have his bike which he had chained up at the parking lot a safe distance from the fire. He wasn't sure how easy it would be to ride it with his cast on.

The biggest problem he was facing right now was that he had no where to stay. He had no family to stay with in town. He had a few friends living in town that he knew from music school, but he wasn't sure if they would be able to keep him for very long. Thinking all this over made Vanya choke up a bit. Bad luck seemed to ceaselessly pile up around him and no matter how hard he struggled it only dug its claws in deeper. Before he started crying he heard the knock on the door. He took a breath and gathered his wits. He wondered who it was.

    "Come in."

Aren smiled slightly at the "Come in." He was lucky that the man wanted to see anyone at all. He opened the door slowly and peered in. The first thing he noticed as that there wasn't any flowers or cards or even anyone else there. The room was basic--the smell of the aseptic smell filled his nose. There wasn't much to look at, except for the man laying in the bed with papers thrown about his blankets. He walked in, and gave a little wave. "Hello. I'm Aren. I was the fire fighter that found you. I'm glad to see that you're okay." He said, rather quickly. Sure, he can run into a burning building without hesitation, but human contact was like a whole other thing for him. He mentally yelled at himself, hoping that this man didn't think it was weird that he came to see him.

Continuing his gaze around the room, he spotted the case that laid next to the bed, "I hear you didn't let go of that. That must be something special." He chuckled slightly. Oh was he making a fool of himself. Why was he so nervous?

When Vanya saw the man enter he knew right away that he wasn't a doctor or a nurse. It took him a moment, but when he reminded him of who he was he smiled. This was the man that saved his life. He likely would have died buried under that building if he hadn't found him. The corners of his lips turned up and his eyes were filled with gratitude. He was also thankful that he had the kindness to spare him a visit. He had still had no visitors as of yet.

"I can't thank you enough for saving my life. I...I don't want to imagine what would have happened if you hadn't found me. I really owe you."

Those words were not apt one for Vanya to use. he already owed so much, but at least this time this man deserved it. He was curious what had brought this man here to see him. Surely he wasn't the first person he had pulled from disaster. Perhaps it was just compassion. He looked at the bedside table where his flute was sitting in it's case he smiled as he took it up and sat it on his lap on top of the papers.

"This thing is everything to me. I couldn't leave that place without it." He opened the case to show the flute in it's disassembled state, still shining and completely untouched by the fire. "What is a musician without his instrument after all."

Aren started to shake his head as the man began to thank him. "It's really okay. You don't owe me anything. I'm really just glad that you're okay." He gave him a big smile. He stood there a little bit awkwardly before the man explained his case. When he opened it, he gave a smile. "A musician! That's so cool!" His eyes glazed over the instrument. "That must have been super hard to learn." He realized that he started to sound like a little kid, looking onto an older siblings cool new toy.

He stepped back and dipped his head, "Sorry. I really am glad that you're okay. Do you have any other friends or family coming? I can leave soon if you'd like?"

"I still feel like I should do something."

Vanya wasn't sure why he was being so insistent. Sure, he wanted to show how much what he did meant to him, but there was very little he could actually do at the moment that would make up for saving his life. He looked back down at his flute and ran his fingers over the smooth side of one of the cylinders.

"Well, it's always been my passion I never felt like it was a chore to learn. I really love playing it." Looking back up when Aren asked if he should go, worried that he'd be in the way of other visitors, Vanya just shook his head. "No need to worry. I am not expecting any visitors. In fact you're the first visitor I've had since arriving here."

Aren nodded at him saying that he wasn't expecting anyone. "That's sad. Don't you have any family around here?" He knew that was pretty blunt, but he was rather surprised. He smiled at the man, glad to know that he was doing something he loved in life. He then thought about his home.

"I'm sorry you lost your home... Where are you going to stay?" He really hoped that he did have family to help him out. He seemed like he didn't have anyone, and that concerned Aren. As he finished speaking, a nurse walked in.

"I'm sorry, sir. I need to check his vitals. Visiting hours are over now." She gave Aren a smile--mostly to tell him to get out. He nodded and looked at the man in the bed, "I hope things work out for you. My name is Aren, by the way." He turned and walked out the room, not sure why he told the man his name. Why was he acting so weird?

"Uh, no unfortunately my family recently left town. They are rather far away now."

Vanya didn't want a stranger to know about his family situation. The truth of the matter was that Vanya didn't know where his family had gone to. they left no trace behind. No note. No phone call. Nothing. It had been heartbreaking when it first happened and Vanya realized that they had saddled him with their burden, not seeming to think twice about it. With time he had learn to take it in stride and was just moving forward as best he could. Before he could answer about where he was going to stay, the nurse came in and cut him off. He was thankful for it because then only more truth would have surfaced. He smiled and Aren made his way out, introducing himself as he did. He would have to find him soon and do something to thank him properly. Once he was gone the nurse got about taking his vitals and examining him once more. His leg was still a bit sore, but slowly getting better.

Aren made his way out of the hospital. He honestly wasn't sure why he went there, but the man seemed rather calm after what had just happened. He felt bad that he couldn't have done more to save his home. He couldn't think like that though. There weren't any casualties and that was all that mattered. He picked up his speed and began to jog towards the fire department. It was rather quiet out today--and it was rather odd that he didn't have work today, but he was glad of it. He didn't really feel like standing behind the counter and taking stupid customers money for gas. He loved his co-workers, but he would much rather be in there with his family; the fire fighters.

With a sigh, he kept jogging. Food sounded nice. He kept thinking about the man in the hospital though. How come couldn't get him out of his head?
