[IMG] He had reviewed the message earlier in the day, on the hypertube ride home. It still surprised him somewhat, but in reality Leo was amused. His best friend growing up, Luke Thomas, had sent him a request to see if his little sister could rent a room from him. Space was a premium on Mars. Well...living space where you could survive without a suit, and bunch of equipment.

The colonies were thriving, had been for several years now. Mostly self sustained on the critical items, and even exporting certain minerals back to Earth, Mars might be relatively small, but it had its own budding society, and Leo Sapienti was proud to be part of it. Leaving Earth was emotionally trying, but the decision was not hard. He always knew he wanted to be part of humanity’s expansion. Now they had several underground colonies, some with domes on the surface, and even a communication hub on Deimos.

Everyone lived beneath the surface on Mars, those colonies that had domes were for agriculture, parks, and other things that benefited the entire colony. There were some years off from having high rise apartments in the sun under domes, and true be told, Leo wasn’t sure he’d move to something like that, even if it was available. Domes were comparatively fragile. The tunnels Leo helped carve out underground were far stronger and more reliable, both from an impact, and from the solar radiation. That said, he did visit his colony's above ground park often enough.

Walking into his apartment, he set his things down and hit play on the message again, letting it show on the larger screen on the wall, and play over the apartments speakers. Luke looked good, and that made him smile. The bastard had always been a baby face, looking far younger than the 35 years should. Of course, he was in a comfortable job, back on earth, with no intent to ‘risk his ass on a rocket ship to a dead planet, only to live in holes’. In fact Luke always asked how Leo’s ‘little hole in the red planet’ was with nearly each message. This one was no exception, considering he was wondering if said hole had room for his sister.

Apparently little Abigail had gotten herself a graduate degree program - which meant the girl was smart as a whip. No surprise, she’d hung out with her ten year elder brother, and his friends, easily enough many times. There was only one university on Mars just yet, and it was in his colony, Tharsis City - the largest city on the planet. Hell it even had suburbs, of a sort.

Leo looked around, his place, and considered the request. He had lived here for over two years now, and had just upgraded to the larger unit - it had two bedrooms, though nowhere near as spacious as the term was used on earth. Both were rooms with a bed, built in storage, and a narrow path along one side of the bed. Hell, the largest space was the living room, which he was in now, and it was barely 12x12, and considered a luxury here. Still, the fact was he didn’t use that other room for much. He had planned to use it as a home office, but never got around to it.

So, with a shrug, the decision was made. He set the console to record, and returned Luke’s message. “Hey Luke. Sure, I’ll share my hole in the dirt with little Abby. hard to believe she is in a graduate program already! Give her my congratulations, and contact information. I have to run to dinner here, so I’ll send a longer message later. Gotta keep up with Martian high society and all! Be sure you all take up a collection and her her on one of the shorter trips coming up here. That ride can get a little rough with only a hundred people to keep you company. I look forward to hearing from her. Talk with you later.”

With that Leo finished the recording and hit send, knowing it would be a good 20+ minutes before it got to Earth. Looking at the calendar, he projected when he’d see a friendly face from his past - no sooner than three months. Plenty of time to get the small room ready for his guest.

Ping. Ping. The pleasant chime echoed throughout the small cabin. What voices could be heard were hushed in anticipation for an impending announcement.

"Attention Ladies, Gents, and fellow Travelers: We are about twenty minutes away from landing on the Martian Hub. Please make your way to your assigned seats for arrival. The current time on Mars is fifteen hundred hours." [IMG]Abigail looked around her. The few people she was traveling with seemed a little worse for wear. The flight had been long and stressful, and quite honestly, turbulent. Well, at first. Exiting Earth's atmosphere for the first time was not the kind of experience she anticipated. Not really to the extent in which she felt herself get pulled into the cushioned seat, unable to move let alone breathe. There were a couple of hapless souls who couldn't handle the pressure and had blacked out before even passing the moon. She couldn't blame them. Leo had said after all, that it wasn't the most comfortable flight to take.

She had lost track of how long it had been since she left home. She was so enthusiastic about her opportunity on Mars, she had rushed her goodbyes. Abigail was regretting that as she felt the small shuttle dock upon the rocky surface of Mars. Things were going to be diverse here. She knew that. Hell, she anticipated it to be thrilling. Now, she felt her nerves kick in. Going to University on Mars was prestigious enough...but now she felt as though she had to live up to the expectations that came with it. Especially now that she was working towards her graduate studies.

Sighing, she pulled her dark hair back in a ponytail and waited for her turn to depart the shuttle. Abigail had packed light, as she was sure to get new clothes after she settled in. Abby wasn't sure what to expect at Leo's place, but she couldn't complain. He was giving her room and board after all. She was unsure how long she was going to stay, but knew it wasn't going to be permanent lodgings. Leo was doing both her and her brother a solid.

It had been years since she had seen Leo. At ten years her senior, she was still a kid back then. It was around the time she was about ten years old did he stop hanging around. Life took them both in separate directions, but he regularly kept in touch with her brother. Still, Abby knew it was going to be awkward around Leo at first. How much has changed? She wasn't sure. She had surmised he was going to be more like her big brother and keep tabs on her while she was staying with him. Was he still the older kid who liked to pick on her when she was little? A part of her wondered what he'd think of her as she exited the shuttle bay, her only belongings in a large canvas bag, wearing nothing but a long denim shirt and a pair of dark cropped pants and trainers. Would he still see the little girl? Would they even recognize each other after all of this time?

Just over three months since the first message, maybe closer to four, they did wait to put her on a shorter rocket after all, though a smaller one. He hoped the young woman he was here to meet had a decent enough trip. Being on a cramped rocket ship with the same few people for months on end was certainly one of the many trials about space….one of the biggest, in his opinion. Thus he’d never made the trip back home, and really didn’t plan to.

The rockets were so reliable now, that they had landing pads, with arms that reached out to connect tubes to the hatches, so passengers could leave without bothering to put a suit on. Much had changed in the two years he’d been here. He still had to suit up and walk out of his rocket, half a mile to a rover that brought them to the colony. Now the space port - still a safe distance from the colony proper, had hyper tubes connecting it, and the general populace never need worry about a suit from beginning to end of the trip. Almost like aircraft on earth.

Luke had sent him an image of Abigail and Leo was impressed. The young girl had certainly grown up, but those big questioning eyes were something he’d never mistake. He stood in the terminal, watching people disembark the rocket. He smiled when he saw her. She stopped, taking it all in. There was a lot of white plastic and concrete on Mars - pretty much everything was made of those substances, so with the artificial lighting, the populated areas were quite bright. He gave her a minute to take it all in before shoving off the wall he’d been leaning against and strolled up to her.

“Abby!” He said, getting her attention, and waved so she’d see him. Of course he probably looked more changed in the past ten years than she did. Makings of a beard, shorter hair, and the wear of living on a different planet for several years. He’d been on Mars for two, but he’d spent almost 4 total on the Moon before coming out this far.

Having gained her attention, he closed in, and gave her a hug. “Glad you made it one piece!” He took her one bag, and knew there probably wasn’t much else. “I remember my ride down to the surface...and I am betting you’d like a shower, followed by a real meal that you don’t have to reconstitute with recycled water. Am I right?” With a nod he led her toward the hyper tubes that would quickly have them just a block from his apartment.

As soon as she heard her name, Abby looked around to find out where the voice came from. With so little passengers, she knew she was the only Abby around. Initially, the shock of the environment change was enough, but when her eyes finally caught sight of Leo, Abby had to admit to herself she was taken aback. He looked a bit scruffy than the last she saw him, but it made him look more mature and masculine.

Ever since she had graduated from college, the thought of age differences often wafted through her mind as being a non-important concept than a few years prior would have. Age distinguished maturity and maturity was an anthropological structure that as human beings, was found attractive in someone at such a young age. Now, while a timeline was necessary, it also bade a feeling of how much had past. While it may have seemed just like yesterday that Leo had been picking on her, seeing him smile and greet her showed her just how much time had passed. It was as if she was a younger person inside of a much older form of herself. It was strange how those feelings would flutter about in her mind in a matter of seconds.

The feeling of his strong arms around her, although brief, made her feel safe and happy. Leo, even after all these years, could still inflict the feeling of family in just a mere touch. After so long with the few strangers on her flight, it was a most welcome feeling she had felt in what felt like ages.

Since laying eyes on Leo, Abby's smile only grew brighter at his light banter. It was as if the years that had past had never happened. "Oh heavens yes," she chuckled, "A shower would be most welcome. Real food sounds too good to be true." Abby followed Leo towards what looked like the same kind of hyper tubes as Earth. He seemed to be carrying her rucksack effortlessly while she trailed beside him. "So tell me, what kind of swill do they push around here? Please tell me there's at least real meat. What I wouldn't do for a damn steak right about now..."

Leo laughed at the comment about steak. “Not quite up to steak yet. That would require real livestock, and there are a few colonies playing with ranching, but we’re a long ways from mass production there. But the meat is pretty real - lab grown, but real enough. Mostly we get ground beef, or whatever meat you’re shopping for, blended with some other stuff. Makes a decent burger. I’ll grab us a couple while you are in the shower.”

The hyperloop ride was never long, once you were in the vehicle anyway. Loading up and unloading seemed to take as long as the trip sometimes. But soon they were in Tharsis City, proper - and he pointed things out on their short walk to a tram that would bring them to his neighborhood. Along that ride he continued to point out features of the city, or at least directions of things. Underground, everything looked like a huge shopping mall, or hospital. Bright, and lots of passage ways of various sizes. The folks that lived and worked here were starting to get the idea of really unique colors schemes and props - better landmarks.

Finally they stepped off the tram, and it was another short walk to his apartment. First floor, with his mandatory window planter garden full of herbs. You got to pick what was planted, if you agreed to maintain it. Else everyone else had a version of fuzzy algae that was very efficient at converting CO2 into oxygen. Leo preferred his rosemary and mint.

“Welcome home,” he announced as he pressed his thumb to the panel beside the door and it slide open. “We’ll program things with your biometrics when you get settled in.” In through a living room, past a small kitchen, and then there were 3 doors. “You are on the left, I am on the right, and the bathroom is in the middle. Most a single guy is allotted.” Leo opened the bathroom door and showed her how everything worked - more like earth than the ship coming over, and then showed her her room. “Not much, but a place to catch some Zzz’s and maybe a small desk in the corner. My room isn’t much bigger. Cozy, right?” He shot her a wink and got out of the way. “Still bigger than a dorm these days. From what I year of the interns they send me, most of the kids are opting for a capsule beds in a mass dorm, with common areas for doing anything that isn’t laying down.”

“So - enjoy your shower, I’ll be back in a few with the burgers, and you can tell me all about your trip, and how people are back home. I am terrible at keeping in touch with anyone other than your brother… and that’s more because he makes the effort.”

"Lab-grown isn't awful" she responded quickly to Leo's mention of lack of cattle, "But what I wouldn't give for a home-cooked meal. If it's lab-grown meat...well, beats the alternative I suppose..." She chuckled. Her dark colored eyes proceeded to look around, taking in all the sights and sounds.

The city looked quite energetic. Everything appeared so bright just on the outskirts. It all looked fluid, with hydroponic recycling in areas mingling with busy city life. It seemed as though the colony had been focusing more on trees than sustaining food around the town, but she was sure there was more than met the eye. A city this comprehensive didn't get anywhere on trees alone. The trees naturally helped recycle the air around them, easing the burden on the electrolytic cells. Food resources had to be obtained or produced somewhere else for a place this size, and of course, that wouldn't be seen immediately by a newcomer. Abby was sure she'd get introduced to further once her classes started.

It didn't take the two of them to reach Leo's apartment. Abby would have to get accustomed to calling it home, if only for a short time until she could get on her own two feet. Graduate studies were going to be a challenge, but she was thrilled at what kind of opportunities it would offer her on Mars. While it was sure to make her homesick eventually, Leo was kind enough to give her a little company she was already familiar with. Still, life on Mars was going to have an adjustment period.

Leo had been very accommodating. He truly was doing her a kindness considering how life on campus would have been like. Anything looked better than a place resembling a capsule hotel--especially at her age. From getting her fingerprints programmed into the biometrics scanner to her own bedroom with a door, she felt a bit spoiled off the bat. She did her best to hide her blush at this realization, a small smile lingering on her features.

Once Leo had left her to her own devices, she set her bag down on the bed. A big sigh filled the room as Abby tried to take everything in. There had been so many changes in such a little time--she was both in awe as well as confounded. Letting those thoughts sink in while preparing herself for a nice hot shower, Abby pulled out her toiletries and a change of clothes. Gathering them up in her arms, she made her way to the bathroom.

Abby did her best to keep the door just cracked so that she could hear when Leo came back with his promised food. She had a strange fear of being in the shower, exposed and alone, only to have someone unfamiliar come in. While she did trust Leo enough to be a gentleman, she was not familiar enough with her surroundings not to be cautious. Abigail knew that the fear was completely unwarranted, but after the rough trip there, the feelings of insecurity still coursed through her veins.

Leo walked around the corner to his favorite burger place. He ate out more often than not, though that may have to change with another person living with him. Or not - he had no idea what her schedule would be like. Hell, he might hardly see her.

He placed the order and waited, getting a hint of the food cooking, before the aroma was sucked up into the vent system. Locked underground, people had to take care that no scent became overwhelming, so all kitchens had pretty powerful vents. Still, it was enough to whet his appetite.

He made polite conversation with others waiting for food, and finally took his order home. He had a couple beers, and the soda maker at home, so no need to stop for drinks, and soon he was letting himself back into his apartment.

“Honey I’m home,” he joked, loudly, so she wouldn't be startled seeing him if she was still in the shower. Leo set the food on the table and turned to get drinks from the small kitchen. As he did, he noticed the bathroom door was partially open, and he saw her in the mirror. In a towel, but...damn - Abby really had grown up. He didn’t stair, and pressed on to the kitchen, but wow, his best friend’s little sister was not a kid anymore, that was for sure. Also, he gave himself a mental lecture on it having been too long, and he might have to go fix that, if he was going to live with a painfully attractive young woman.

With that, he opted for the beers, and set them on the table, along with napkins and had everything laid out. “These are the best burgers on Mars, I think anyway. Could be that they are on the way home, and super convenient, but I think they are still the best. Still, not a lot of bad food here actually. Everything is super fresh, and pretty tailor made. It’s pretty easy to find things you’ll enjoy - and with more business minded people coming to Mars, there are ever more options. Two years ago, it was mostly public cafeterias; now we have burger joints, pho shops, an Italian place downtown. I think you’ll like it.”

Waiting for her to join him, he just talked two her while she was getting ready - it was a small place, not like they couldn’t hold a conversation no matter where they were in it. “So how was the trip?”

A hot shower was more than she could have dreamed of. Indeed, the heat alone was wonderful -- the water pressure was enough to make her groan as her weary and travel-worn muscles were speared with jets of hot water. Knowing the limitations of water, Abby did her best not to dawdle. Unfortunately, the luxury of the temperature and pressure made it difficult. She could only imagine what a bath would be like, where she could at least enjoy the water for a little longer.

When Abby had finished her shower, she had wrapped a towel around her thin frame before fully stepping out into the cold of the room. Her brief shower had filled the room with steam and turned the mirror opaque from the humidity. Wiping away the fog from the mirror, Abigail looked herself to examine how she had looked after months on a ship. The trip had taken more out of her than she first thought. The dark circles that had developed under her eyes was a key indication that she would need extra sleep to reverse them. Abby used her middle finger to gently pat under her eyes in an attempt to bring a little more blood flow to the area before applying her moisturizer.

When all was said and done, the whole process from the shower to greeting Leo upon his return was roughly 30 minutes. Abby had walked out of the bathroom in a cropped black t-shirt and a pair of grey yoga pants that sat just below her navel. She had pulled her chestnut hair back into a long plait that fell over her right shoulder and had put on the glasses she wore when her eyes started to bother her. Contacts were great, but sometimes they made them feel as if they were suffocating after a while of wearing them. She wasn't sure if Leo had seen her in them. Hell, she wasn't sure what her brother had told him or not.

Abigail approached Leo with a smile as she felt the heat rise to her cheeks. She wasn't sure why her body reacted the way it did. Perhaps it was because she always had a small crush on Leo since they were kids, even if he did pick on her quite a bit. Still, he had grown up to be quite the handsome man, and she couldn't deny the attraction that still lingered in her subconscious.

"God that smells good," she replied, her gaze turning to the food on the table. A rumble from her stomach reiterated her comment as she sat herself down at the small table. "Oh, the trip was a bit...er...rough, but it was okay. I could have done with better company and better food. You know, the basics." Taking a bottle of beer, she took a swig and gave him a genuinely warm smile. "Thank you, by the way, for making room for me. It means a lot that you would sacrifice your personal space with little ol' me. I promise I will do my best not to get in your way despite the close quarters...."

Leo smiled, and bit into his burger, not at all shy around folks. He never had been, and life on Mars reinforced that mentality. While it was growing, there was still a sense of small community. Not everyone knew everyone else - but most acted like it.

He listened to her about the trip, and more about her thank you. He smiled, and nodded, washing down his burger with a swig of beer before answering.”No worries at all. I got the larger place with the intent of doing something with it...and never got around to it. Until a few weeks ago, it was really just storage. As for getting in the way - don’t worry about it.” He nodded to the wall with a screen on it, there was a couch between the table they were at and that screen. “This isn’t a large place by any means, but that also means I don’t stay home too much. Most people don’t here. We go out, home is for relaxing by yourself. If you want to catch the latest shows or movies, or eat, or pretty much anything, most folks are out and about. Especially at night. You’re probably tired as all hell from the rocket and the landing, but I’ll show you around tomorrow or whenever you are ready.”

The meal progressed just fine, and Leo found he did like the company, and seeing a familiar face from Earth, in person, was nice. The only times he’d see people is video messages. There was no way to talk instantly with anyone back on their home planet - everything was 15-40 minutes delayed, depending on the time of year. The colonization of Mars brought the lost art of letter writing back.

When both were done, he got up, and cleaned up everything, putting each item into its respective waste bin. Everything was recycled here - it had to be. “So, need anything else? Going to unpack and call it a night, or you want to go around the corner ad hit the pub?” He chuckled at that, “Hell, last time I saw you, you were what, 10? I don't think I was legal to drink, much less you." He laughed, but also realized that if it had been that long since he'd seen his best friend's sister, then it had been a really long time since he'd seen other people. Some, he didn't mind that fact, but had it been so easy to forget about the rest the planet?

Abby was a little curious about the nightlife on Mars. She had wondered for months after being accepted into the University for her Graduates degree about what life would be like so far from home. While Abigail was definitely old enough to be out of the nest, the economy on Earth wasn't like it was twenty years ago. Space was limited, and her parents allowed her to have her freedoms and still live with them, so long as she remained in school and getting good grades. At this thought, Abby sighed a little, her eyes a little downcast as she took a few mouthfuls of her food. So many things were changing. A part of her was eager for complete freedom, while another was apprehensive about being so far from the comfort she had known her whole life.

Putting down what remained of her burger to take a drink, she gave Leo a smile in return. Her dark eyes did their best to study him without seeming creepy. "You know," she started, "It has been quite some time. And while I am exhausted, I'm also energized with the new environment. Even if I did try to rest, I'm not sure how much sleep I'd get, so the bar sounds nice, actually."

Abby chuckled and reddened slightly, her eyes breaking away once more in shyness. With a little shrug in an attempt to hide her insecurity, she took another swig of beer, emptying the remainder of the dark brew from the bottle. "If you don't stay home much, I suppose that'd be helpful for my studying. What do you do for fun around here?"

He chuckled at that, and nodded. “I couldn’t sleep for a few days once I got here. Takes the body, and the mind, time to adjust really.” Getting up he looked down and decided he was presentable, electing not to wear anything that spelled out he was looking for company. Tonight was about showing Abby around, not scratching an itch.

“We’ll head out when you are ready, mostly we just walk, or take a tram.”

When she was ready he answered her other question, “as for fun...lately I’ve not done much. Been working too many hours, and I need to slow that shit down - but we have a new tunnel in the works, and it’s almost ready to start building. I still find that to be an exciting time - a whole new area for the colony. This one will house new industrial equipment, bringing more options here to Mars.” He smiled, knowing he sounded like a dork for his obsession with things, but it was who he was.

Leading her out, he pointed out various things as they walked. “I do go to bars, some are laid back, like tonight. We have two dance clubs in town, an arcade, and several smaller spots. Most folks go out at night and socialize. It's a big community, just now getting past the point where you feel you know everyone in town. The wild west days of Tharsis City are ending it seems. We’re all grown up.” He smiled and led her down another turn.

Soon they were in front of Zhang’s, and he opened the door for her. “This one is my favorite to just hang out. Good beer, decent booze, if you like vodka or gin. They are working on something like a Martian whiskey, something about big, wood like mushrooms to make barrels to age the stuff in, but no one is really quite nailed it down yet. When they do, Mar’s will really be self sufficient. As it is now, decent whiskey still comes from Earth, so it's worth more than gold.” He found them a couple seats at the end of the bar, and waited for Zhang to come over to them. The little Chinese man wore very loud colors and was constantly in motion. He’d originally come to one of the Chinese colonies, but since moved here to start the bar he’d always wanted. He was one of those working on ‘the great barrel problem’ - and usually had samples of his latest effort.

“Hey Zhang, this is Abby, she’s just in from Earth, crashing with me for awhile.” Zhang bowed, and asked for her order, sliding two of the whiskey samples in front of them - always seeking new faces for new feedback. Leo shot his sample, grimaced, and smiled. “Yup, still burns, and has that weird aftertaste. You sure you didn’t wash your socks in it or something man?” The bartender rolled his eyes, “No one appreciates the process!” he bemoaned, but it was clear both were just playing at the offense.

It really didn't take Abby long to get ready. She really just had to throw on some shoes and grab her purse. She slung the bag across her chest and let the small denim item hang about her waist. "I don't really have 'going out' clothes," she had explained. "I had saved some money for clothes, as I didn't want to travel with a whole entourage of bags. Besides...I wasn't sure how much room you had, and I didn't want to cramp your style."

Abigail listened to Leo intently. He appeared to work quite frequently. She wasn't surprised that the bachelor didn't have more time to mingle with the city-life. Then again, it was all just an assumption. Abby gave him a small smile as he went on just a little about the colony expansion. It was nice to see him so enthusiastic about the growth of Mars. It was one of the few things they seemed to have in common. While Abby was more into botany and horticulture, he was enthusiastic about the machines and expansion.

The mere difference between them was what her friend Becca would call a 'Man vs. Women' dynamic. Pink and blue. The differences between man and woman. While Becca wasn't much to slap labels on it, she was a firm believer in making everything neutral. Abby didn't mind this outlook. In fact, Abby wasn't much to dwell on the sociology of it all. Too much drama. In her eyes, it didn't matter who wanted to dress like what, or what gender they considered themselves. Just because there were still stereotypes in society didn't mean everyone believed or had to believe in them. A part of Abby had hoped that Mars would be a little different. She was so tired of the bickering on the news back home.

Dim lights passed them by as they walked. Again Abigail's eyes did their best to soak in her surroundings as Leo talked about the changes within the town. Abigail smiled at him and listened intently, but did not speak much. There were too many things to observe and witness. She had eyed a few shops as they had passed, noting their location to visit them later on her own excursion. When Leo had stopped in front of his favorite bar, Abby took a glance at the sign above the establishment, before entering.

The bar wasn't super exciting. It had potential, she had thought, taking note of her surroundings. There were a handful of wooden tables around the room and old-school jukebox in a corner, and for some odd reason, a large fish tank. It wouldn't take Abby long to assume that it was to help the footprint of the establishment of the new colony. Meanwhile, Leo explained to her the whiskey experiments that the owner was attempting.

When Leo introduced Abigail to the owner, Zhang, she had bowed slightly back in the form of respect and greeting, just as he had done. When slid a sample of liquor, she eyed it suspiciously. Abby looked over at Leo as he tossed back the burning alcohol, only to hear him groan afterward. Just him mentioning him washing socks in it made Abby want to push the liquor away. Still, she sniffed it, before taking a little sip to get a feel for it.

"Leo here tells me that you're trying to use mushrooms to brew this stuff..." Abigail started, her face grimacing at the taste, "If these are the large mushrooms I've heard about, you might want to try something similar to what aquarists do. To start a new tank, an aquarist would take a medium already used to start a tank and put it in the new one. There, the good bacteria and organisms from that medium can be colonized in the new tank as it cycles. Once established, it can then take on fish. Perhaps..." she blushed, feeling like a nerd, "Perhaps you might consider taking some old whiskey barrels, breaking them down, and using the wood chips in a tea-like method when aging. It might get the results you're looking for..."

Chuckling, Abby sniffed the shot of whiskey again. "Yeah...better make me something with vodka. Need to wash this taste out of my mouth..."

Listening to Abby talk about how to improve the mushrooms via old whiskey barrels was interesting, and both he and Zhang stared at her. It made some sense, and Leo could see the gears turning in the man’s head. No one had tried ‘flavoring’ the mushrooms, just trying to turn them into something like wood, and go from there. But it was still fungus, and war more water permeable than hard oak. So what Abby said made a lot of sense.

They just needed whiskey barrels. Leo motioned Zhang closer, “I know some guys on earth that want to invest in delicacies on Mars. But like...quietly. They know how proud we Martians are of doing shit ourselves...but getting barrels from Earth...that’s going to cost. Let me know if you are interested.” Leo was about to go into business with Zhang over Abby’s comments, and as the Chinese man made Abby a drink, resembling a cosmo, built with locally produced citrus liquor. Leo leaned in, “Don’t worry, I’ll be sure you get a cut for the idea too...fuck, if you are the one to solve the Whiskey Problem, you are going to be famous on this planet.” He touched his glass to hers in a silent toast and turned around to watch folks start arriving.

The crowd slowly morphed from those just getting off work, and stopping in for a drink to those who had been home, and changed, and were out for the evening. The attire was pretty drastic on Mars, especially in this city. With no real reason for protection from the elements, Martian norms were more about expression of style and what you were after.

This was a neighborhood bar, so had a bit of everyone, before they went to more specialized places. There were two dance clubs in town, on that catered to the more extreme folks - BDSM, furries, lots of latex, etc - but any and all of it could be found in smaller portions at a bar like this now.

Abby had said she’d not brought much clothes, and needed to shop. Well, she was about to get an education as to what was available. One lady came in wearing nothing but a leash and boots, her very shiny boyfriend right behind her. A guy dressed up as a dog, his mask off for the moment while he had a beer in the corner. Sarah and Sasha came in - sisters who liked to share (he knew well), wearing just matching underbust corsets and high heels. Most everything was a synthetic fiber, plastic or rubber - things that could be 3d printed, or woven from by products here on Mars. It certainly meant they had their own styles.

Leo watched Abby take it all in, and ordered another drink for them both.

A hard blush came upon her face as the stares from the owner, and Leo bore down upon her. Man, she felt like a total nerd. Get her going, and sometimes Abby didn't shut up. Still, whiskey was her drink of choice, and she couldn't handle the turpentine Zhang was trying to pass off as palatable alcohol.

"I have only arrived today," Abby responded, her gaze passing between them both, "but can you simply get wood chips from Earth without a hustle?" She lowered her voice and leaned in close to avoid anyone overhearing in case she'd mention anything taboo. "I mean, disguise it as something like mulch for the plant life here. I wouldn't attempt something like sawdust...but shavings could work too if put through a fine enough sieve or bag...."

Shrugging at Leo's comment, Abby offered him a smile. She took her newly proposed drink in hand, clinked it with his, then drowned half of it in a matter of moments. Abby had to take the edge off somehow. The longer she was around Leo and his charming smirk, the more she found herself drawn to him. It was bad enough being a dork on a piece of rock she was unfamiliar with. Being a dork in front of Leo felt worse. How was it that a simple glance would want to steal her breath from her lungs? Abby tried not to think of it as she swirled what remained of her drink. The heat still burned her cheeks.

As if nothing could get any worse, it was just her luck to see a new crowd coming into the bar. At first, Abigail thought that newcomers might help ease the embarrassment and tension she had growing between her shoulders. It wasn't until she noticed the attire of some of these folks that had her staring at them with wide eyes. It had taken her a moment to realize she hadn't been breathing, it being essential for living and all. Abby could feel her heart racing in both nervousness and the drastic change in atmosphere. Taking a look at Leo, she raised an eyebrow in a quiet desire for him to explain. Or not to. Actions did speak louder than words, after all.

Finishing off her drink, Abby pushed away her empty glass. When Zhang quietly offered her another with a movement of his hand, she shook her head. "Get me more vodka. Straight up, if you don't mind. Better yet...leave the bottle. I have a feeling it's going to be an interesting night..."

Leo and Zhang discussed possibilities in hushed tones for a bit, plus Abby’s input on mulch. Both were pretty excited on the idea, and discussed ways of financing the wood they wanted - and had discussions on that as well - the wine makers here would be just as eager to get their hands on real barrels. They were starting to grow grapes on Mars...not in a huge quantity, but wine was inevitable looking ahead.

When Leo caught Abby’s new drink order, he looked about and grinned. “Oh, yeah...the, um, culture here is a bit more...free. Probably not on the brochure, but it's also not a huge secret either. Most of the colonies are like this. A few are more conservative, but tend to be the smaller, focused colonies.”

It was about then that an Asian woman wearing nothing but a fishnet body suit and ankle boots came up to give him a hug, slap his ass, and say that it was nice to see him, before moving on to order her drink. Leo turned back to Abby, and chuckled, “She used to be my boss. But she’s been working more on the outer tunnels lately, so we don’t see much of each other.”

He shrugged and ordered another drink for himself - this time trying the rum. Mars was great at using byproducts to make other things, and now that sugar was being made in decent quantities, it also meant rum distillation was taking off. Still just the white stuff, as the ‘whiskey problem’ was really a ‘barrel problem’. Taking a swig, he decided it wasn’t bad at all, and would be great with mixers. Another point of pride for his new home planet.

Turning about to take in the bar, and leaning back to still talk to Abby, he smiled. “Most everyone here is really friendly. Hugs are the norm, the euro cheek kisses is pretty common, and we’re just getting to the point where we don’t know everyone in town...but we still all know a lot. The rule is, basically don’t kink shame, or any shame really. The only way people really look down on you here is not pulling your weight. If everyone does their job well, then we all not only survive, but now have time to thrive and relax - and whatever form that takes, no one here is really going to judge.

As if to prove his point, a man walked up to the bar, wearing nothing at all but body glitter, and ordered a drink, before noticing Leo. “Oh hey man! How’s it going?” He reached across Abby to shake Leo’s hand, and then offered the same hand to her, “Mike, I work with Leo here. He’s talked about you coming to Mars. Congratulations on the scholarship! A few of us are about to go hit one of the new clubs, but figured it's a bit early, so figured I’d get started here. Leo’s always talking about it. Hey, you should come along! Leo’s been hiding out in bars, instead hitting the clubs for too long, and you look like the sort who likes to dance. I have extra glitter if you need to change…”

Leo just smiled and shrugged, grinning at how Abby was taking everything in, and sipped his drink with an amused smirk.
