The Hunters: A group of men and women trained by the Roman Catholic Church to kill Vampires, Werewolfs, and any in human type of being that they deemed as spawns of the Devil. Formed when the church was in its infancy, the Order was made in secret and kept that way throughout the centuries. These men and women were trained in every aspect of ways to kill every creature that the Church sent them after. They trained hard and trained with every weapon that was made, from simple daggers to guns as they were invented.

Many of the hunters prefer the older weapons as they like to get up close and personal when they kill. Others like getting the job done quickly and less messy, so as not to have to have a clean up crew come and try to keep the population from know that these creature really exists. To the normal human the creatures of the night and myth and legend were just that and what the movies portrayed them as. So much was not known about these creatures and what the movies made them to be was mostly lies. Mostly. There were those that wanted nothing more then to live in peace and not even be known about. But the Church saw them as evil and wanted them dead.

Those of the Church in charge of the Order made sure that only the best were bred to make the perfect killing machine. Men and women were selected to breed and their offspring were trained almost from birth to be the killing machines for the church. They did as they were told no questions asked. Well most of them did. Some saw things a bit differntly though they did not let their superiors know this.

There were three ranks to the Order of Hunters. Sparrow being the beginner, one that had to prove themselves so they could be promoted to the next rank of Hawk. These were the more experienced hunters that went out in small groups to hunt and kill. Then there were the elite, the Eagles. They were the toughest and the bravest and the most deadliest. One could tell their rank by a ring each wore bearing the symbol of the bird that represented their rank.

The year 1805, Venice Italy. A young man, attending the University was walking along one of the canals when a figure ran into him. Both of the men stumbed and fell. Behind the one man that had been running was five other men, each carried a wooden spear and swords. Both men got to their feet as the other five attacked the one, trying to run him through with their wooden spears. The man was quick, and it looked as if he was faster then the other men that were trying to kill him. The Student tried to stay clear of it all but one of the men with the spears was able to run the man through the side and the bloodied spear pierced the side of the Student, greviously wounding him. He fell in to the canal as he passed out.

Later he awoke on a bed in some ones home. An elderly man was tending to him and talking to someone. The tone of voice was one of amazement and wonder. The Student, Dante Silva found out why. The wound he had received had healed and had left no scar. Dante sat up and the old man approached him. "It is a miracle that you are alive young man. Yes a true miracle. "

Over two hundred years Later, Dante Silva still lived. He had come to discover, he did not age, he healed rapidly, he moved faster and was stronger then any human alive. He could jump from the ground three stories up or from the roof of a three story building and land on his feet with out breaking anything. He also discovered what he called shifting. He could be in one place and in the blink of an eye a distance away.

He had given up trying to become a scholar and had taken up the trade of being a thief. He found his new abilities helped in this as he was quite acrobatic when he had been a student and now with his enhanced agility and strength he was better then any. He became known as the Prince of Thieves. In his long years in the world, he had come to see a differnt side of it. The Supernatural side if one would call it that. He had encountered vampires, werewolves, changelings, what people would have called faye, and other creatures that was only in myth and legends. It was a whole new world that lived within the normal one.

Now and then there were those that made things hard for the others, as what was called Hunters came and sought them out and killed them. Most of these were vampires and werewolves that had a craving for blood and human flesh.

Dante was on a job. Some rich dude had a very expensive and presious gem locked in a safe in his fancy and rich apartment. Dante was there to releive him of it, and sell it for a good sum of money that would let him live a good life and also do something else. But things don't always work out the way you want them. After cracking the safe and taking the gem, the owner returned way to early from his nightly nightclubing. He had a lovely woman with him and as it was the man saw Dante. Dante ran for the window and smashed through it and sailed across to the roof top across from the building the apartment was. He had thought he had made his escape but found that the man had made the same long leap and was pursuing him.

"Shit. he is one of them." Dante muttered as he ran for his life. The Bastard was a vampire and he was coming on strong. From roof top to roof top they jumped and Dante was not gaining on this one.

Maya d'Angelo saw the proximity monitor light up like a Christmas tree and scaled the walls of the three story building as quickly as she could. Millennia of selective breeding and perfected training along with state of the art equipment helped, but she could never be as fast a vampire, especially the older ones. Bertram Toolidge as his current name was, was by any account middle aged at a mere three hundred years old, but he still gave her a run for the money. The bastard knew she was after him and had taunted and teased her for months. A few times he had almost trapped her as they played their deadly cat and mouse game. He had teased her, tried to lure her into his world. He had left hints, cards, even a couple of times gift cards for things from coffee to full body massages. Son of a bitch was good, he was even good looking and kinda cute but thank goodness he was not as utterly seductive as Zoran Vacev, who over the course of almost a thousand years had made seduction of men and women, super naturals and normals, his hobby. Zoran had trapped her once and toyed with her for a full day, a fact she kept well hidden from her organization as they would no longer trust her and possibly relegate her to a desk job. If they only knew... She had taken a sabbatical to get her head back in the game. He still reminded her of that every now and then, knowing he was fairly safe from her organization, the really big supes were rarely caught and erased. Suffice it to say, Zoran didn't need to kill anyone, he could just turn them into his mindless sex slaves any time he chose to. Man, or Woman.

She jumped across the roof tops in pursuit of Bertram when she saw that Bertram himself was chasing someone else. The night air was cool and slightly foggy making the surface slick on some parts. Her breath was hot in her chest, and her legs beginning to burn after fifteen minutes of this damnable chase. Who the fuck was he chasing? No mere mortal could evade a vampire this skillfully for this long. But her proximity meter did not show any supe other than Bertram nor did the one being chased give off any electronic signature of being masked, so what was he?

First thing they teach you in Sparrow Academy is not to give chase when distracted. Yeah... she remembered that as soon she felt herself slipping on wet tile and then falling.

'Swell, Maya,' she thought, 'you'll be the first Eagle to die splattered after falling off a ten storey building,' as she slipped, bounced off something hard, and fell some more. At some point she must have reflexively cried out, even though they were trained to be silent. But she winced when bleeding and sore and realized she had fallen onto the glass ceiling of some old Victorian building, and a spider web of cracks spread around her. She knew she couldn't move because any pressure anywhere would cause the glass to fail and she would fall into the foyer several stories below her.

"You owe me one," said the deep and dignified voice with the hint of Caribbean she knew belonged to Bertram.

"Well, crap, Bertie," grunted Maya, "couldn't you just move to another town, or country? continent maybe?"

The vampire chuckled. "If you'd rather stay here and see what happens..." he let his voice trail off. Maya heard the glass crack more, and she grunted a "fine, I owe you one" between clenched teeth. Moments later, Bertram had grabbed her hands and swung her onto a ledge just as the glass gave way, and she lay panting looking up at the big, black man, with the Jazz voice looming over her.

"It's been a pleasure Maya, be more careful next time."

Maya closes her eyes in utter frustration, and heard him lightly land on the roof above her, as usual his last words were..

and she finished them with him "...and don't call me Bertie!"

Maya sat up, feeling irate, sheepish, and ...yup furious. The person Bertie had had chased wasn't a normal. Why had she not noticed him before? Was he new? If the organization heard about this she would be demoted back to Hawk. She had just earned this promotion, much to the consternation of some board members who questioned her maturity and lack of religious devotion. She stood up and walked to the rusty old roof top door and tried the handle, it was locked. Not a problem at all.

She picked the lock to the roof top door and went down the conventional way via staircase, the way normal people did. The building appeared abandoned and she used a flashlight to guide her down the old and partly unsafe flights of stairs. Once downstairs she emerged from the building onto a small and dark side street. No one to be seen. Nothing moving other than an alley cat sitting like a comma and lapping from a puddle of water, and some newspaper rustling in the wind. She would find this man, and he would answer.

Dante ran and jumped and continued to do so, looking back at the one chasing him. Then he spotted another figure who seemed to be chasing the vampire. "Oh great, a Hunter, just what I needed." Dante murmered and then suddenly the vampire stopped and turned back as the Hunter seemed to have slipped and fell on the wet roof tiles. He grinned thinking he could now make his escape. But something seemed to tell him to see what was going on. Yeah it could be dangerous. The Vampire who was chasing him was not one of the real old ones but probably about how old he was now. Not as dangerous as the few old ones that sill lived but he would be a problem if he had to fight him. Dante stopped and turned back making sure to stay in the shadows and creep around the ledges of the buildings, below the roof tops. He watched as he saw the vampire looking down at a woman dressed in the typical Hunter Garb. At first he thought the Vampire was going to kill her, but what happened next and the words exchanged made him raise a brow. it seemed the two knew each other and he had to hold back a chuckle as she agreed she owed him one. Now that was rich. A hunter owing a vampire. He wondered what the Order would think of that.

After the vampire whose name was Bertie according to what she had called him, helped her, he again took off in the direction Dante had been going. Well he would only find that he had disappeared, and would piss him off even more then having the gem stolen from him. The Hunter found her way to the roof door of the building she was on and picked the lock. Dante now chuckled as he made his way down the walls of the buildings, jumping from one wall to the other and pushing off to the wall of the other one, until he reached the ground. He stood in the shadows and watched as she exited the building. This one was different somehow. He decided to follow here and learn a bit more about her. Might come in handy one day.

But before he could even begin to follow and her to leave, there was a scent in the air, one he could only associate with that of a lycan. His muscles tensed. Normally they left people alone, not wanting to be tracked by the lovely little toys the Order was able to create to find abnormals, as he called them. "Crap." he whispered to himself as he saw the brute and it was about to pounce on the unsuspecting hunter. "Will this is going to be stupid." he said as he leaped into the air, did a sumarsault and brought both booted feet down onto the lycan's forehead. The force knocked the thing back and he landed on his feet, just behind the Hunter. He recgonized the brute as his red eyes burned with anger. A trouble maker for sure, Leroy was one of the bad ones that made it hard on the others like him and other abnormals. Caused the Hunters to sniff around to much. "Not today Leroy." he grinned and turned grabbing the Hunter and taking a deep breath. "Going to regret this I am sure." he muttered and then he shifted so they were back up on the roof top.

He stumbled away from her as they appeared. He could shift by himself with no problem. But he had not been able to build up the strength to do it with someone else. He was a bit dizzy from it but turned and faced her. "Well now Miss, you should always watch your six around here." he grinned at her slowly regaining his balance and strength. "Leroy is a sneaky son of a bitch, and one that no one would miss if he was, how does the Order put it, oh yeah, Terminated."

One minute she was in the alley watching a dog get his ass handed to him, and the next she was on a roof top. The one she had just spent a good five minutes getting down from.

"If there wasn't some asshole dog bounding up the stairs right now to eat us," she said panting and pulling her weapon free, "I'd be beating your ass up, tying you up and taking you in for interrogation." She pointed the Glock at the door hearing the howls of the infuriated lycan coming closer. As predicted, lycans had never been known for being circumspect, Leroy threw himself through the door and bounded to the end of the roof when he stopped looking for them. They however had waited to the site and when Leroy bounced against the far wall and scrabbled to turn around Maya calmly unloaded two rounds in him. Leroy looked down on his side and thigh, whimpered rather pathetically and .... sort of exploded in a mass of fur and goo.

"Clean up in aisle 6," muttered Maya and then calmly pointed the weapon at the man who had just... well... saved her skin, she sighed and lowered the weapon. "Who the fuck are you, how the fuck did you do that, and why the fuck did Ber... I mean a vampire chase you? Answer in that fucking order, please and thank you."

Dante could not help but laugh as he saw Leroy explode, then she turned the gun on him and he raised a brow. She lowered it but began demanding answers to some questions. Again he laughed. "Well now." he began and gave a sweeping bow to her, "I am called Dante, the Prince of Thieves. Now as to your second question, well that is very hard to explain the details of it all for I don't know the mechanics of it all, but it is called Shifting. You are here one moment....." he disappeared and reappeared right behind her, "and the next you are here." he laughed and stepped back. A very handy thing but only a very few that I Have been told can do it. Now as to the vampire, Bernie I think you called him." he smiled as he rubbed his chin. "You seemed awful chummy with him, and you a Hunter. Hmmmmmm now that is a strange thing. But to answer your question, he was chasing me because I stole something from him. I aquire things that are hard to get. Only thing is no one told me I was going to be stealing from a Vampire."

He walked around her looking her up and down. Damn she was a good looker. All the curves in the right places and pleasing ones at that. He had his run in with hunters before. They could never catch him or get a bead on him. He was a slippery one. But it seemed those he had faced were not out to kill him but to capture him. None of them looked like her though and he could not help but look her over.

"Now for you. What is your name and how do you know that vampire. I heard you tell him you owed him for saving your lovely ass. " he chuckled. "Yes I witnessed the whole thing. I think he has a think for you." He leaned on the structure that was the entrance to the building smiling at her. He was not worried about her trying to take him or shoot him. He would shift away and she would not know where.

Sirens began to wail and Dante shook his head. "Cops will be here soon. That cannon of yours is loud out here Someone called them and there is a big mess here. Not in the mood for cops asking questions if you know what I mean." Sure enough two squad cars pulled up and cops could be seen entering the building. They are going to be here soon. Not as fast as Leroy there, but fast enough. You going to stick around?"

"Gotta go," replied Maya and without answering began to (carefully) run along an edge and hop to the the next roof top. A block away later, she was back on the ground, and heading towards the canal. She had a few hidden holes here and there, not exactly sanctioned by the Order but pretty much all the Eagles had them, and she wanted to rest for a while. She was sore from the fall, confused about Dante, and needed a bit of quiet time. It was very early morning by now and here and there a bird chirped, people began to leave for their shift, and a woman walking along the street at this time of night did not attract a second look. And still she felt as though she was being followed. Maybe by that annoying shifter. She ducked into an old building she knew and entered the warren of underground passages which had connected many of the houses and neighborhoods for centuries. She emerged several blocks away and finally headed to her safe house.

Well, technically it was a safe apartment. Two rooms, a kitchenette, and a bathroom in a seedy, run down neighborhood near the rail way station and conveniently far away from the Order HQ. Her room was as she left it, the wards for supes, and technical safety measures still in place and she entered into her sanctuary.

To walls were exposed brick, two had layers of peeling wallpaper, the old wooden floor was creaky in some spots and she knew exactly which spot made what creak, and which ones were safe to step on silently. There was a cache of weapons, hollow point silver bullets filled with holy water, laser weapons to blind and burn creatures of the night, and all kinds of hardware to propel it with.

Her bed was a second hand wooden twin size affair, there was a table and two chairs. Her computers, and other hardware was hidden in a wall panel built for her by Pauley, one of her team. He was a disappointment to the Order based purely on his sexual orientation which angered Maya a great deal. Pauley was brilliant, dedicated, and the sweetest man around.

She locked the door carefully, checked the wards on it, on the windows as well, and then just stood in the room and undressed. She was sore as heck! With plenty of cursing she limped to the bathroom and turned on the water heater, and walked back to the kitchenette and put on the kettle for some tea. She never drank, she never did drugs, not that she hadn’t been tempted, but she knew with the stress of her life she would too easily slide into trouble. It had happened to better people than her.

Dante, Prince of Thieves, and oh, who the hell sent him to steal from Bertie? If she saw him again, she would try to convince him to give it to her so she could return it. Stealing from a vampire was an exceedingly stupid thing to do.

The kettle sang and she poured herself a cup of tea and then filled up the bathtub. Some soothing bubble bath and she could lie there for a while, soak away the pain and stress and keep puzzling this new development.

He wasn’t hard on the eyes, that was sure.

Dante laughed as she said she had to go. Didn't even have the courtesy to give him her name. He could understand not wanting to talk about a vampire that she seemed to know quite well. But not to at least give him her name, now that was just down right rude. But that was Hunters. When the police arrived, all they found was the pieces of Leroy. He of course was in his human form now, or what was left of it. Dante would love to know how the forensics boys were going to explain the mess. He was on the ground and walking away from the place and mixed with the bystanders that were crowding around to see what was going on. Oh if they only knew what was really out there, living among them, maybe even a co worker or neighbor. He walked away and caught a cab and took it to his fence. Rico was the best fence he ever knew and he had over his years known a few of them. The man could sell anything and make a profit. But this item had been commissioned. Rico got those now and then. Especially when there was something that someone wanted really bad, they contacted him and he contacted Dante.

Rico welcomed him to his business which was an antique shop. Not a really ritzy one like some of them but it held some things that were old and valuable. But that was only his legal business. He enjoyed selling the really good stuff to rich people. Paintings, jewels, and other art work would go through him. "My friend. Do you have it?" he asked excitedly.

"Oh I have it." Dante said and grabbed him by the shirt and pushed him up against a wall. "Why didn't you tell me the owner was a blasted Vampire!" Dante demanded.

"Vampire? Believe me Dante, I didn't know. My buyer didn't tell me you would be stealing form a vampire." Rico said with a bit of fear in his voice. Rico knew of the Vampires and others. There were only a few humans that did. They did a lot of business with him. After all what did you do with things you clollected throughout your years as a vampire or one that could live hundreds of years. Lot of the stuff they had were valuable in the modern market. Hell one had an original Michale Angelo that no one had known existed. It went for several million and that was cheap as it was worth more then that. Dante let the man down, ans smoothed his shirt.

"Alright, I believe you. But I bet your buyer knew. The son of a bitch." Dante was angry on that matter. Rico produced the money that was Dante's share of the profit. It was a considerable amount. Who ever wanted that damn gem had paid well for it. He took the money and said. "You know how to contact me if something else comes up."

Across town a knock came at the door of the safe house. "Maya!" I know your in there. Open up." came a males voice. One belonging to the Commander of the Order for that zone. He was her mentor, teacher in all things of the Order. It was his recommendation that got her promoted.

"I'm in the bathtub, Tuttle," yelled Maya, unwilling to give up her comfort. But the knocking came again, insistent, sharp.

"Maya, now. You know you don't want to attract attention."

Maya grunted with irritation. He was right, as usual. And she owed him. But damn it all...

    "Just a minute!"

She got out of the tub and wrapped a towel around herself. Clad in that, and nothing but a silver crucifix nestled in her cleavage, she undid the safeties and opened the door. The distinguished looking gentleman, looked at her, at her cleavage and the fact that the towel wasn't big enough to hide overly much and cleared his throat after blushing a bit and moving past her into the apartment.

"Er, uh, could you get dressed please?"

"Gimme a minute boss," said Maya and grabbed clean clothes, before heading into the bathroom once more.

Tuttle looked around t he place shaking his head. "You know you could have a better place then this rat hole. I know you want a safe house as all Eagles do, but this place is a dump. A place that I would expect one of those Satan Spawns would hole up in." He had a decent place in the more well to do portion of the city, besides the rooms at the Order's complex in the middle of the city. All members of the Order had rooms at the Order Headquarter Complexes. But of course the more elites had their own places and of course safe houses. Places to get away and relax some from the other Hunters.

"Got a call from Communications, saying there was a disturbance down town. Gun fire, and a body that was blown to pieces." he sighed. "You are getting sloppy Maya. Also there was a report of people jumping from roof top to roof top. Three people. I know you were after Bernie again. He is a slippery one that I would love to nail. But who was the third? Any idea?"

Dante returned to his own home, in one of the high rise apartment buildings. He had bought his place there. Hell he could afford it and more. It was a large place with a view of the city. Two bedrooms, bath that had a sunken tub, full kitchen, and large living area and a wet bar. It was furnished with comfortable furniture and here and there a painting from one of the masters, or some other art work that probably should be in a museum. Over two hundred years of stealing things and getting paid for that stuff had made it possible for him to enjoy some of the good things in life. But he also had another way to use his money, especially the money he had got for the gem.

He drew himself a hot tub of water and stripped out of his sweaty clothes and walked down into it. It was big enough for two people if he wanted. He reclined in the tub and let the hot water ease the stiffening muscles. It had been one hell of a day and he wanted to just relax now. A hot bath, a nice stiff drink, and listen to some music and perhaps the news on TV. When he did grab his drink and sit down in just his bath robe to turn the TV on, the news of the strange death on the roof top was being reported. "Poor Leroy, All over TV and the roof top as well." he chuckled. Then he saw a man in the back ground of all the cops and reporters "To late to clean up the mess hunter. Bet your there to see if anyone saw anything so you can keep them quiet. Don't want the world knowing that everything they have read in books about vampires and werewolves and the like are true. " That made him wonder about the female Hunter. He would not mind see what she looked like with out her hunter's clothing. Damn she was a good looking one. But he figured he would never see her again. What was the chances of that.

Maya sighed, "Tuttle, I like this place because it is so far away from everyone else. Look, the other's look down on me if they are Eagles, or are convinced I gave you a good amount of blowjobs at the minimum for you to push my promotion through." She paused and looked through the windows at the early morning light shimmering through the dust motes dancing in the air. She knew better than ignore the other issue, Tuttle never let anything go. He had been her mentor, a father figure really, since children of the Order knew their lineage, true, but weren't raised by their parents.

"Yes, that was me. I was chasing Bertram but he eluded me. He was chasing a shifter who had stolen something from him. I don't know his name. He cornered me on the roof top when Leroy burst through the door, and after I erased Leroy I didn't stick around, but bailed. Didn't even get a chance to call a clean up crew, the cops came too fast."

She suspected that Tuttle knew this was the Cliff Notes version of the whole story, but she also knew that he would leave it at that for now.

"C'mon Tuttle, I was going to get some sleep, but how about you buy me breakfast first? Miss Mamies is still only a block from here, and their croissants are still the best."

Tuttle raised a brow at her explanation. He nodded, but there was a look in his eyes that said something quite different. Especially when she mentioned that the Shifter had stolen from Betram. A faint smile seeped to creep to his lips. It was as if he knew exactly who the Shifter was. "Sure, sure," he told her. "Breakfast is on me." he said and opened the door for them to leave, but stopped. "I have to use the bathroom so be with you in a couple minutes." he said. He walked over to the bathroom and went in and closed the door. Weather it was the acustics of the place or what ever his voice could be heard beyond the door. He was making a call to Headquarters. "He is here in town. Priority Alpha." Priority Alpha, capture upon sight. No harm to be done to subject. It was evident that he did not want Maya to know, even though she would be getting a text about the alert. It would be from Headquarters and not him.

Dante relaxed and began to get hungry. There were a few places that served amazing breakfasts. A small place called Miss Momies was one of those. Amazing Croisasants and their omlets were the best he had ever had. He quickly got dressed and was out the door and soon enough, taking the normal way, down out on the street hailing a cab. The trip to the little restaurant didn't take to long as traffic was light. He entered the place and was hit with the wonderful smells of the food there. Everything fresh, delicious and savory. He sat down at a booth and made an order. He was just digging into it when the door opened and in walked the woman from the roof with an older man. "Really?" he thought to himself. Out of all the places in the city, they would wind up in the same place yet again. The man with her had to be another Hunter. He looked at the man's hand and sure enough, he had the eagle ring. He was glad his face was not well known to the Hunters. Well except for a very few that had tried to get him and of course the female hunter.

Her phone chimmed and the Priority Alpha message came over the message. "Priority Alpha. Dante Eston. Wanted. Take alive and bring in. No harm to come to this subject. All Hunters knowing what he looks like are to be brought to the City immediately."

Maya, was well trained, and that meant not betraying was she thought or felt. When her phone chimed with the message about Dante the Shifter, she was surprised. The Order clearly already knew him, and wanted him. But damn that man, he had saved her ass a few hours ago, and wasn't about to rat out to Tuttle that he was sitting one booth over. Beside, she was curious about him, and wanted to know more about the idiot who stole a vampire's prized possession. If she could give Bertie his gem back maybe they could go back to trying to kill each other. Or at least pretend to. Bertie loved teasing the crap out of her even though he was mostly as gay as they came. Most of the supes she managed to kill weren't much liked by anyone. She got the job done while maintaining a sort of status quo. All out war wasn't going to be good for the ignorant bastards that populated the rest of the world.

"I'll have three croissants, scrambled eggs, bacon, strawberry jam, orange juice and a pot of coffee," she smiled sweetly at the gum chewing waitress.

"...sure, honey," came the slightly nasal reply, "and you handsome?" Tuttle placed his order and waited until she had left before asking Maya what she made of the message from the Order.

"I didn't get a good look at him unfortunately," replied Maya, he was moving so fast. He seems youngish, but he had a hood on so I didn't even get to see his hair color." The waitress returned with their breakfast. Oatmeal with fruit and coffee for Tuttle, the rest for her. Maya grinned and slid a croissant onto his tray.

    "I insist."

"Well, in that case I accept."

It was a ritual. He would order healthy and she would insist he try the croissants, and bacon.

Maya wondered about the handsome man in the other booth, was he listening? He clearly wasn't afraid, he wasn't trying to run away or shift. He had clearly been around the Order long enough to know what attracted the wrong kind of attention. Who was he? She suspected that he would follow her so she would need to avoid going to her apartment, but then Tuttle might notice that she wasn't heading to her crib. Now what?

"To Bad you didn't. He is wanted by the General Council. Well you should know a bit about this one since he is here in our city. He has been wanted for over two hundred years by the Order and has managed to evade the most skilled Hunters. You said he is a shifter? There are not many of those any more. Only the most oldest of vampires could do something like that, I am talking the Original Vampires, the ones that could walk in the light of day, eat normal food and only needed to feed on blood once and a while. This one has all the qualities of the old vampires except he does not feed on blood and has no means to do so. He is some sort of hybred. Not sure how he came to be but records say he appeared about two hundred years ago in Venice Italy."

He began to eat his food and the croissant she had given him. "But this time we will get him for sure. Those that have chased him recently in other cities of the world will arrive and the Hunt will begin. The General Council wants him alive. Why I am not sure but as you know what they want they get."

Dante listened to the conversation. His hearing was quite more then a normal humans. So it was the Order's General Council that wanted him. Well he was a celebrety then. Hybred indeed. No, just a freak accident was all. But what the old man had said about the shifting made him perk up. So only the original vampires could do what he had been doing. The one whose blood mingled with his must have been one of those then. One that had lived for thousands of years. Well at least he knew that much now. Who it was he still had no clue. But that could be found out if he could get into the Order's archives. He was sure they kept records of the great hunts, and the one that they had hunted that day had to be one of them. Maybe a further talk with the Hunter would be in order. When he finished his breakfast he got up and left his money for it on the table with a hefty tip. As he approached her line of sight he motioned with his head towards the outside. Hopefully she would get the idea and follow him as soon as she could.

"A hybrid?" echoed Maya impressed. "How fascinating!" She ate a few more bites of her breakfast and then asked, "why is the order so keen on capturing him, I wonder." Then she shrugged and said "Well, that is not for me to question, I'm just a little worker drone." That of course earned her a "Maya, this is exactly why the others didn't want to promote you. Your lack of respect and humility." Tuttle wagged his spoon at her while she, unimpressed filled her third cup of coffee. "Papa Tuttle," she said sliding him a strip of bacon, "You know my strength lies in the fact that I don't follow party line." She burped a little and giggled. "Oops."
Then she patted his hand. "Look, I stay out of everyone's way, I get the nasty ones no one else wants to deal with, I don't mind slumming while the rest of you cavorts about in in tuxedos and gowns. The Order knows they need people like me." She finished her last bites and got up and kissed him on the cheek. "Thanks for breakfast and I'll write a formal report about Leroy by tomorrow. I promise." Tuttle grunted but smiled at her. "Bye, kiddo."

Outside, Maya blinked into the light and donned her shades. She was, like much of her prey a creature of the night. Bright light was a nuisance and something she wasn't used to. She stepped into the alley, hoping to find Dante who had indicated to her to come and follow him. She wanted to know more about him.

Dante was there waiting, leaning up against the wall of the building, looking at his finger tips as if he was contemplating getting them manacured. He heard her before he saw her and grinned when she entered the ally. "General Council. Now that is impressive to be wanted by them. That tells me one thing though. It is not for a good reason. Come on lets get away from here. Your friend might follow you." He lead her further down the ally to another street and hailed a cab. "Have to do something and hell might as well drag you along. I have a feeling you want to know more about me, and I do thank you for not letting him know who I was. Any other Hunter would have been all over me trying to capture me and be the big Hunter on Campus. Once in the cab Dante gave the driver an address and the cab took off.

"So lets get down to it shall we. Yes I am not quite human anymore, not a vampire and not quite human. A Hybred? No. Wasn't born this way though I bet our archives have it all down in their records. I was born in Venice Italy and was going to the university there when the "Accident" as I call it occured. I was returning home after classes along one of the canals when a man ran by, being chased by five men. Hunters with spears, swords and a variety of weapons. The man stopped and laughed as the five men closed in and began trying to kill him. The man was fast and agile like nothing I had seen before. He seemed to be toying with the five Hunters, taunting them almost as if it was a game to him. Well to make the story short, one of the men got lucky with his spear and ran it through the side of the man. However I was behind the Man at the time and the spear blade, with the man's blood pierced my side. From that point I don't know what happened to the Man, because I fell into the canal and floated away. I was found by an old man and dragged out. He took me to his house and tended to the wound, which did not seem to need much tending as it was beginning to heal already. Later I learned of the Order from a friend and that the men chasing the other were Hunters of the Order and that the one they were chasing was a Vampire. "

He looked over at her, "What ever happened, why I am not like him now I don't know. Perhaps it has something to do with not being bit by a vampire, though I doubt that. It is them giving you to drink of their blood that changes you. All I know is I was changed and had, from what I learned over the years the best of their qualities and not their worst. I put my new found abilities to good use." he grinned. "Found I was better as a thief then a scholar. "

The cab finally reached its destination. An Orphanage. It was a huge mansion like place with a wall around the five acers of land it sat on. Inside there were playgrounds and trees with benches beneath them, and a small garden. Children of all ages were outside playing or just talking. The older ones seemed to be helping watch the smaller ones. On the porch of the huge house was an elderly man and woman who looked up as the cab pulled up and Dante stepped out with Maya. As soon as the children saw him a number of them yelled out his name and came running to him. A little girl was the first to reach him and she hugged his legs and then lifted her arms up. Dante chuckled and picked the little Girl up. "This is Sally." he intorduced the little girl. "Come on I think you need to meet the Wilsons. They run this place."

Maya was terribly conflicted. What she was doing was going against ALL of her training. Obedience, loyalty to the Order which had been her entire life. The deal with Bertie was one thing. He was one of many. Just another vampire. But Dante was one of a kind. He was right, she would be celebrated for the rest of her life. A painting of her would hang in a corridor gallery, future generations would learn about her, and she threw it all away for a sense of curiosity and ...and... well, she hadn't seen Leroy when he went for her and Dante had saved her life. She sighed inwardly, she really ought to just hang up her weapons now and crochet doilies at this rate. Saved by two supes in the span of one hour. If Tuttle knew.....

The listened to the man talk as the cab threaded it's way through heavy traffic before driving into the outskirts and finding its way to a sprawling estate over run by... children? Maya winced, she had no experience with children at all. Hunters weren't even allowed to be children when they were children. They were bred and then born, and then raised and trained. She knew as a fertile female Eagle she was required to donate eggs during a hiatus next year. At twenty-five they considered her eggs at a little overripe already. Most women she knew just got it over with sooner than that. She was so disgusted by the whole thing, she had obtained several deferments until she was warned that if she didn't cooperate she would have to give live birth. Oh hell NO!!!! Since donating eggs required fertility shots etc they went on a 'vacation' and would donate before getting back to their lives. Some members fell in love and retired and had babies but it had to be sanctioned, wasn't encouraged, and since relationships wasn't something they had grown up observing and practicing, most hunters really sucked at it. The idea was that hunters wouldn't become entangled in emotional bonds either towards their offspring or their partners and risk lives by making decisions not aimed at the big picture.

Maya grimaced at Dante and hoped it looked like a smile "These. are. children." she ground out between clenched teeth. "I can handle vampires, lycans, and all manner of other hellspawn but not this variety. What are we doing here?" A small boy had hung on to one leg and she walked with a limp dragging him along as he giggled helplessly. Another held on to her arm and she lifted her arm trying to shake it off. The little boy squealed with laughter, and even Maya had to admit that these tiny humans were actually kind of funny.

"What are we doing here?" he chuckled. "Taking care of the Orphanage of course." He was greeted by the two elderly people. But the two looked at Maya with stern looks and looked at Dante with questioning eyes. "Its alright Martha." he spoke to the woman. "She is not quite like the other Hunters. At least she hasn't tried to kill me or capture me." he chuckled. He turned to Maya, This is John and Martha Wilson. They run the orphanage here, take care of the children, and make sure they get a good education while they are here." he introduced the older couple. "I would introduce you but you never gave me your name." again he chuckled, "But of course the circumstance at the time were not conducive to that sort of thing. " He took out an envelope that was full of the money he had gotten for the gem. "Here You go Mary. This should help take care of things for awhile." he looked at Maya, "Yes I support the Orphanage with a lot of the money I get from stealing things."

"Come inside and I will make some coffee and tea." Mary said and the two of them turned and went inside.

Dante put Sally down and said "You go play for now. I'll see you in a little while." The girl smiled and nodded and ran off to play. The two young boys followed suit and Dante entered the house with Maya. "I found this place some years ago. It was run dawn and about to close, with no where for the children to go. I funded the remodel and the upkeep of the place. Found Mary and John and put them in charge of the place. The money I give them goes for food, clothing and education of the children. Most go off to public schools and some stay here to be taught by John and Mary till they can go to school. Some of the older ones are almost ready to go off to collage. That is funded by the money I give as well. At times when I go abroad, I bring back gifts for the children."

They got to the kitchen and Mary put on the water for the tea and began brewing some coffee. She then turned and reached into a drawer and puled out a gun that held the eagle standard on the hilt. She placed that on the table. "Thats right Honey, John and I use to be what you are. We gave it up a long time ago. Forbidden to fall in love with another Hunter. Well that was it for John and I. We wanted a life together. When Dante found us, he gave us a chance to have that life and a house full of children. No one is going to mess with him." Mary gave Maya a hard look as she sat down in a chair next to John.

"I'm Maya," she said looking at the hard and hostile expressions of the two older adults and followed them inside. The children from what she could tell were well fed and happy, and the house looked relatively clean, as clean as she supposed a house crawling with tiny humans could be. She was surprised that a supe and thief at that could be so altruistic but she had the distinct feeling that Martha and John would make good on their threat should she even look sideways at him. She wasn't sure why Dante had brought her here. Was it to convince her he was a good guy and help him? She had already broken enough rules of the Order in the past 18 hours to be placed permanently on desk duty, but this was defying High Council. That often came with an invitation to take a particularly unpleasant pill. It didn't kill, but it messed up one's brain so badly one was just about only able to manage a game of energetic shuffle board and wear diapers after that. Still, she was patient and hoped Dante would eventually tell her what this was about, or what he wanted from her. And so she sat patiently and drank a cup of strong coffee, her fourth cup that morning.

She looked quietly at the handsome man who looked quite at ease sitting in an old, overstuffed easy chair while drinking a cup of tea, and she finally said.

"What is this all about, Dante? A plea to help you? Not do what my entire life has been about? This little stunt here has already earned me the pill, but I'd chase a bullet through my own brain before that happens." She was getting angry. "Idiot you goes and steals from a vamp to support orphanages? Bertie is by all accounts one of the nicest ones. He has his appetite under control, doesn't commit too many crimes, hasn't drained a human in decades, but a theft of a jewel he has treasured is stupid and may very well put these people here at risk. Even if not personally from him, it puts them in the supes' radar which is not where they want to be." She noticed Martha moving closer to the gun from the corner of her eye and snapped. "Lady, I am at least half your age and up to date on my training requirements, don't even fucking think about it. If I had wanted to hurt this bonehead, I'd have done it an hour ago."

Dante had to laugh at how angry Maya had become. "Well Bernie old boy didn't own that Gem. Actually he stole it from some rich oil sheik in the Middle East. Well that was my understanding anyways. Bernie I don't think is a thief like me or I would know something about him. I have a feeling he stole it for a reason and not just to possess it. Stealing it back was just getting it to be returned to its owner, or at least I think that who it is going to. Paid quite well for it though. So I don't think Bernie is going to be to mad as it wasn't his. But if he took it to give to someone else, now that one might be pissed." he told her. "Now as to why did I bring you here?" he shugged his shoulders. "Wanted to talk to you away from prying eyes, in an enviornment that was safe for all. You don't seem to be the Normal Hunter that the Churches Order cranks out, other wise you would have wasted Bernie and thought nothing of it. I want to know a bit more about you. You not trying to kill me shows you have honor and a different attitude then the other Hunters. You seem to know that all of them are not that bad, and most want nothing more then to live their lives in peace."

He sipped his tea and sighed. "Like John and Martha here, you are different and perhaps deserve a break. They wanted out, I gave them that. You are still in and I might be able to help you as long as you don't go after the nice ones. Those that are the bad apples make it rough on the others, bring in hunters that love nothing but to kill any and all abnormals. John has told me of the training of the Hunters. No childhood, no love, being nothing but a killing machine. How things are pounded into their heads and brainwashed for the most part. Not sure how you broke free of that by I am glad you did. But yes there is something I want. Finding out now that only the oldest vampires could shift like I did, means that the one that changed me with its blood is one of the originals. I want to know who it was those five hunters were chasing. Thought you might be able to help there. So that is why I brought you here so we cold talk and see if we can work together at times." he chuckled, "Also to let you see I am no monster."
