Nathan dropped his saddlebag and lute in the room, then headed downstairs and to the stable in back. "I'm back, girl. Now lets give you a rubdown and brush. If there's a farmer's market in the village, I'll see about getting you some carrots tomorrow." People would always look at him strangely when he talked to his horse. But Midnight had been the longest relationship he'd had with a female. Unlike the other women in his life, she never talked back to him or demanded much of him. So he did his best to please her. How he wished women were as easy to please!

Ryöku Lúpatar chuckled as he dried his hair and face, although it did leave his hair in wild tangles. "I'm Ryò, though whilst I know a few songs on a piano, I'm better with a good guitar... and as for reading sheet music... I couldn't do that if I had a map and guide," he quipped with a self deprecating laugh.

"He headed for the stable, by the way. It usually depends on the sound you'd want for a particular tune, really. I tend to carry more than just Aòkaen here. He's just the most noticeable," he said wryly as he tried the stew. "Damn, girl. You made this?" he murmured with surprise. It was quite delicious.

“Ah, the stables, that makes sense...” Abia stood there for a moment as a thought clicked in her mind. Before she knew it she bust out into a fit of laughter. “He promised his horse a rubdown!” She covered her face in her hands, barely noticing Ryo’s compliment for her cooking. She uncovered her face, her cheeks redder than a tomato with a few tears at the corner of her eyes threatening to fall. “Th-thank you,” she managed to say in between giggles, “and I’m sorry for my lack of decorum right now. Something he had said earlier made me right bashful and I didn’t fully understand it.” Blubbering out another laugh she tried her hardest to hold back, “but now I do-hahahahaha!”

She wiped away the tears with the hem of her apron as she steadied her breathing and let out a large sigh, “haaaah, excuse me.” She headed back to behind the bar and ran her hands through some water, wiping off her face to cool it down. “Remind me later to get him back for that! And if you want any more of that soup, just let me know! There’s plenty more where that came from.” She called out to Ryo from across the room before heading over to the stage, playing with a few keys of the piano here and there, not really playing any tune in specific.

Ryöku Lúpatar chuckled as he tilted his head. "You thought he might have been referring to a companion... or maybe trying to sweet talk you? I mean, you are very beautiful and humble," he deadpanned, teasing her.

He ate a bit more as he let the heat of the fire dry his clothes. He hummed softly, thinking. He scooped up the guitar after a few moments.

"I can feel it coming on now
    As the music plays,
Taking shots with the night owls,
As the world just fades away...

Got a big check in my pocket...
'Bout to get it all good,
Light it up like a rocket...
    We're going all night long

    Everybody sing ooh, mm...
I love it when you... ooh...

When the sun goes down, stars come out...
It's a, can you feel it?
Wanna take you by the hand, dancing with my pals...

    Sit around, round, round...
It was so high, we can paint the sky,
Tear the top right off the ceiling...
And I swear we're never, ever, ever coming down...
    Never coming down...

    Oh, oh...
Ooh yeah it's coming down, can you feel it?
    Oh, oh...
Never, ever, ever, never coming down...

    Well the band's on fire,
And the beer is ice cold...
We're going down to the wire
Then we'll all go rolling home...

And maybe we'll keep it going,
    'Til we see that sun...
Coming up right here, right now
I wanna see you move and hear you sing it out loud...

    Oh, oh,
Ooh yeah It's coming down, can you feel it?
    Oh, oh
    Never coming down...

Dance, baby, dance, baby, don't stop now...
Dance, baby, dance, baby, don't stop now...
I said oh now, oh now, oh now, oh now, oh now
    Dance, baby, dance, baby...

I said oh now, oh now, oh now, oh now, oh now
Wait a minute, baby, tell me one more time....
She said oh now, oh now, oh now, oh now, oh now...

    Dance, baby, dance, baby...
Oh now, oh now, oh now, oh now, oh now?

When the sun goes down, stars come out...
It's a, can you feel it?
Wanna take you by the hand, dancing with my pals...

    Sit around, round, round...
It was so high, we can paint the sky...
With the love right now we're feeling....
And I swear we're never, ever, ever coming down....

Never coming down, never coming down...
    Oh, oh
Ooh yeah It's coming down, can you feel it?
    Oh, oh
    Never coming down...

    Oh, oh
Ooh yeah it's coming down, can you feel it?
    Oh, oh
    Never coming down,"
his voice was low and soft but powerful.

When the rain started, Nathan was thankful he'd decided to stay at the tavern. He'd already slogged through enough rain, as had his horse. Having seen to the comfort of Midnight, he returned to the tavern and to Abia. "If I can drag you away from your other customer for a few moments, I think I'll take you up on that offer of a bath." He wasn't suggesting anything outrageous, but he still couldn't help a smirk as he made the request. He'd seen how he'd thrown her off-guard with his earlier comment.

She bobbed her head a bit, trying to follow along with Ryo’s song on her piano, but it was a very strange tune. She had never heard anything quite like it and found it difficult to keep up, especially as somebody as untrained as her. Nevertheless, her struggle was quickly interrupted by Nathan’s return.

She saw his smirk when making his request, and she couldn’t help but smirk right back with unyielding eye contact, knowing what he was referring to now. She toyed with the idea of drawing him up a cold bath instead of a hot one like she had promised, but she narrowed her eyes a bit, her smirk never wavering, muttering, “nah...too mean.”

She stood from the piano stool and led him to his room. “I’ll be right back. Just make yourself at home, alright?” She spoke to Kyo before heading up the stairs with Nathan.

“Just head right on in there.” She nodded at Nathan towards his room, “There is a tub already partially filled with water behind a folding floral printed screen, but it’s probably a bit too cold for you to get into right now. I’ll be right back with some hot water, just sit tight.” With that she walked away for a moment, heading into a room at the other end of the hall to grab two tin buckets of water that she had had hanging above a second fireplace. With one handle in each hand, she steadily, and slowly, lifted them from the flames and carried them back to Nathan’s room, taking care not to spill. It was a small struggle, but she breathed through the heavy loads she carried, finally putting them down just inside the door to the bedroom. She sighed and wiped the bits of sweat accumulating from her brow with her sleeve. Once she caught her breath, she poured one of the buckets into the bath, a heavy steam rising into the air above it. The other one she left next to the tub for him to pour as he saw fit. With her hands on her hips, and another sigh to catch her breath, she asked with her usual smile, “is there anything else I’ll be able to help you with?”

Nathan was tempted to ask the lovely lass for a back scrub, but decided to let her return to the young lad downstairs. With only two customers, she already looked overworked. He saw no reason to add to her burden.

"No thank you, lass. I'll not be needing you any further."

Sinking down into the tub, Nathan tried to remember the last time he'd had a real bath. Or hot water. Usually, he bathed in whatever stream was close at hand. Or stood out in the rain, as he had the last couple of days. It wasn't like he didn't have coin to spend. He just didn't like spending money when there were free options. But sleeping out in the rain was not one of those options.

She bowed her head slightly and left him to his peace. She closed the door behind her and made her way back down the stairs, clicking her tongue in disappointment. She had hoped he would be cheeky one more time. A prepared quip floated through her mind, ready to fire at the opportune moment, “but then...it wouldn’t really be a quip then, now would it?” She asked to nobody in particular, only to remember that Ryo was still there, “right? A good quip comes out in the moment. It’s not something that you can prepare.” She already knew the answer, posing the question to the guitarist rhetorically. She walked over to his table and grabbed the empty bowl, sweeping past Nathan’s table to pick up the coins he had left her for the food she had served him earlier.

After bringing the dirty dishes into the kitchen for her to clean later, she came back out to the bar and poured two glasses of whiskey. She circled around to the other side of the counter with both glasses in hand, placing one of them on the table next to Ryo, “here. The fire will warm you up fairly well from the outside, but this will heat you right up good from the inside.” She patted her belly with her free hand and gave him a small wink. “This one is on the house.” She smiled pointing to the whiskey she just put down before taking a sip from the glass still in her hand.

Ryò chuckled softly as he noticed the young woman approaching from the corner of his eye as he lightly strummed the guitar with random chords. "If it's anything like sakè, it likely would. I don't drink too often, though. Doesn't mean I would refuse it, though, especially from such a beautiful woman," he deadpanned, not trying to sound like he was teasing her nor trying to 'get in her pants'.

He took a sip of the whiskey before coughing a bit at the unfamiliar burn. "Not bad," he commented with a slight smile.

She quirked her head a bit, eyebrows tilted as his words didn’t seem to match his tone. He seemed to be complimenting her, but his neutral expression only served to confuse her. Most people smiled when they said such nice things. Perhaps he was being facetious...should she be offended? Then again, he does seem quite foreign, what with the strange terms he uses and the odd sounding song he had just sung...perhaps it is in his culture.

She mulled over these thoughts as she took another sip. She tried not to spit any of it out in a chuckle as she watched him cough. “It is a bit intense for somebody who is not used to it. I probably should have warned you. Apologies. It’s probably nothing like that saké you speak of.” Something familiar about that word resonated with her though, when she remembered the owner of the tavern. “Oh, I think my friend told me about that saké. It’s a drink made from rice, right? My friend is the owner of this place, but he’s an adventurer as well, so he’s rarely here. A few months back he came home from a very distant land where he picked up the folding privacy screens for the rooms upstairs. I think that’s when he spoke about the saké....is that the land where you are from?”

Ryò tilted his head with mild interest. "Hai, though I don't often drink sakè myself. I do, however, know others that enjoy it. I personally prefer a bit more body with my alcohol," he teased with a small smirk curling the edges of his mouth.

"You could say I'm a traveler myself, though I grew... disillusioned with what my life used to be. The one who tried to recall me... was one I'm rather familiar with. He saw emotions as a weakness, though I hear someone else took over for him... which is a good thing. Honestly, I doubt I'll go back to that," he said softly as he shivered despite the warmth of the fire and the drink.

"Hmm..." Abia hummed in mild amusement, shaking her head slightly at the body comment. So many cheeky men in her midst tonight.

She wasn’t entirely sure what he spoke about afterwards, but it seemed to her that his life was rougher than most based on his expression and melancholy tone. “Well, if you need anything more, just give a holler.” She put her hand on his shoulder, and squeezed gently, for comfort as she said this, before pulling away again, “I also have extra rooms upstairs that you’re welcome to stay in for the night, but I’m afraid that won’t be for free. You just let me know.” With that she headed back into the kitchen to start cooking dinner as she noticed night drawing in on them.

As the storm outside calmed down to a light drizzle, The Calm Leaf Tavern’s door opened to welcome a few new visitors. Some of the local villagers popped in for a night of libations, good stories, and good music. “Hey Abia!” A petite, slightly older woman called out towards the kitchen door, assuming her in there. Abia stuck her head out the doorway and smiled at the familiar voice and face, “Hi Liza! I’ll just be out in a moment. I’m almost finished up with cooking dinner for a tenant.”

“Oh! An adventurer? Is he cute? My type?” The woman got excited and Abia could only laugh in response.

“Yes, he seems to be an adventurer. Cute? For sure. Your type? Ehhhhh, you’ll have to decide that on your own when he comes down.” The woman just laughed, walking to the other side of the bar and helped herself to a beer from the tap. Abia watched her leave a coin on the counter as she made her way back onto the floor to sit at one of the tables with a few other patrons.

One of the few ways Abia was able to run this place on her own is that some of the locals know where everything is and can serve themselves. It’s a small village, but the community is close. They never felt the need to use the term ‘honor system’ because everybody did what they could to help each other innately.

A couple of men sat at the bar, talking loudly about some monster they had seen outside the village. At the table with the petite woman sat another girl and a man, gossiping about who the adventurer could be upstairs.

As time wore on, more and more villagers entered. Abia was at the bar serving drinks as the volume increased inside the bar with everybody trying to talk over each other. Some people noticed the guitarist by the fire, but his foreign look and strange instrument kept some of them to just talk about him from a different table, instead of conversing directly with him.

Just next to the stage, a man sat on the piano and began playing some lively music, a woman in a dress and corset singing to the tune, only her expression wasn’t quite so happy to match with the words and tempo.

The bath had made him feel more human. Not so much like a wild animal in the woods. So he put on something better and prepared to go downstairs for a drink. Nathan could hear a woman downstairs singing a song he knew well. Ghost of a Rose. Waaaaay too melancholy for this early in the evening.

The valley green was so serene
In the middle ran a stream so blue...
A maiden fair, in despair, once had met her true love there and she told him...
    She would say...
"Promise me, when you see, a white rose you'll think of me
    I love you so,
    Never let go,
I will be your ghost of a rose..."

    Her eyes believed in mysteries
She would lay amongst the leaves of amber
Her spirit wild, heart of a child, yet gentle still and quiet and mild and he loved her...
    When she would say...
"Promise me, when you see, a white rose you'll think of me
    I love you so,
    Never let go,
I will be your ghost of a rose..."

When all was done, she turned to run
Dancing to the setting sun as he watched her
And ever more he thought he saw
A glimpse of her upon the moors forever
    He'd hear her say...
"Promise me , when you see, a white rose you'll think of me
    I love you so,
    Never let go,
I will be your ghost of a rose..."

Alexis sighed softly, thankful he'd liquefied his sizeable family assets so he was rather rich. His gaze slid over the people as they entered, watching quietly as he had finished the stew a bit ago.

He heard the people talking, some about him, though it made little difference to him. He did notice that the storm move on, though. His gaze flickered up as he heard the unfamiliar song.

His deep amethyst eyes glowed softly as they narrowed, their color paling to an iridescent mother of pearl color, a soft opalescent silver. Barely visible rings formed in his irises.

After she finished pouring the drinks, Abia heard what the poor woman was singing, seeing a tear threaten to fall down her cheek. When the girl finished her song, Abia snuck out from behind the counter to serve the woman a warm cup of hot chocolate as she sat down at a nearby table. The pianist only watched. Once he knew the girl was taken care of, he began to play a more upbeat tune.

“Sarah, he’ll return one day, I’m sure of it...” Abia had spoken the words softly to the girl, but even she wasn’t sure herself. She only prayed for the girl, wishing she could do more for her but was unable. After rubbing her back a bit, another person from the other side of the room called for Abia’s assistance. With a reassuring squeeze on Sarah’s shoulder, she left to help her customers. Sarah just gave her a thankful smile before taking a sip of the soothing hot beverage, glancing up only to notice the foreign man staring at her. She quickly averted her gaze, unsure of how to feel about that.

As she walked over to the other customer, Abia saw Nathan reach the bottom of the stairs, giving him a large smile. “Hope the bath was to your liking. Did you want your dinner?”

Nathan stared at his lute, not certain he wanted to take it with him downstairs. He was more comfortable being an observer rather than a performer. But if the music was going to start out so sad, this was not going to be his kind of evening. Not to say that he couldn't get a bit maudlin once he got drunk, but that usually came towards the end of the evening, by which time, everyone was too drunk to care. The start of the evening needed music that was rousing and raucous to get everyone in a drinking mood. Sighing, he grabbed the lute and headed downstairs.

Nathan shook his head to Abia's enquiry, not yet ready to eat. He needed to rouse an appetite by getting the adrenaline pumping. He headed to the stage and the pianist. He still wasn't sure a piano and a lute were a good combination. But if he got the crowd into joining the song, then the piano would be needed, since the crowd might drown out his lute. Leaning down, he asked the pianist "Do you know Under a Violet Moon?" The man nodded yes. "If you can let me start and then join in at the chorus, I'd appreciate it." Once again, the man nodded his assent.

Looking to the crowd, Nathan announced, "The following song is Under a Violet Moon. If you know it, feel free to join in. And if you feel like drumming on the table, it will make a good substitute for real drums." He heard a cheer, which indicated some knew the song. He took a moment to tune his lute before beginning to strum the opening. Nathan had always been good at singing, although his voice had started to take on a gruffness that came from yelling too much in battles of the past.

Dancing to the feel of the drum
    Leave this world behind
We'll have a drink and toast to ourselves
    Under a Violet Moon

Tudor Rose with her hair in curls
Will make you turn and stare
Try to steal a kiss at the bridge
    Under a Violet Moon

Raise your hats and your glasses too
We will dance the whole night through
We're going back to a time we knew
    Under a Violet Moon

Cheers to the Knights and days of old
    the beggars and the thieves
    living in an enchanted wood
    Under a Violet Moon

    Fortuneteller what do you see
    Future in a card
Share your secrets, tell them to me
    Under a Violet Moon

Raise your hats and your glasses too
We will dance the whole night through
We're going back to a time we knew
    Under a Violet Moon

Raise your hats and your glasses too
We will dance the whole night through
We're going back to a time we knew
    Under a Violet Moon

Close your eyes and lose yourself
    In a medieval mood
Taste the treasures and sing the tunes
    Under a Violet Moon

Tis my delight on a shiny night
    The season of the year
To keep the lanterns burning bright
    Under a Violet Moon

Raise your hats and your glasses too
We will dance the whole night through
We're going back to a time we knew
    Under a Violet Moon

Raise your hats and your glasses too
We will dance the whole night through
We're going back to a time we knew
    Under a Violet Moon

    Under a Violet . . . . .
    Under a Violet . . . . .
    Under a Violet Mooooon

The last word was punctuated by a loud "HEY" and a stamp of their feet by the assembled crowd. And then a cheer. Nathan bowed to the crowd and to the pianist and went to the bar.

"Scotch, if you please, Abia." he asked with a wink.

Abia has heard that song many times before, but she was so used to hearing it from a feminine voice. Hearing it from a gruff male voice gave it a new perspective, and it was quite more fun to listen and dance to. She couldn’t help but move her hips a bit behind the bar, clapping her hands and the counter in time with the song, same as the rest of the tavern, even singing quietly to herself along with him.

When it was all over, she applauded his performerance. She reached beneath the bar to grab the liquor he has requested, pouring him a glass. “That was fantastic. Makes me wish I was a bit more confident in my singing the way you are.” She rested her elbows on the counter, chin in her hands as she watched the pianist playing a new song, nibbling her bottom lip as she imagined getting the tavern up and dancing herself.

The petite woman from earlier noticed Nathan sitting at the bar talking with Abia. She was right, he was cute. Telling her friends she’d be back, she quickly moved to a stool next to the adventurer. “Hey there. You’re new in town. My name is Eliza, what’s yours?” Abia’s musing was interrupted when she heard her friend talking with her customer. Her cheeks reddened as she stifled a giggle, shaking her head at her friend’s antics. Leave it to Eliza to latch onto any kind of new meat.

"My confidence was gained in all the wrong places, Abia. On the battlefield, scared out of my mind, and suddenly noticing those around me were looking at me. All of them too scared to take charge, expecting me to lead them into battle. After that moment, standing on a stage, singing and strumming my lute seems not that fearsome. Just don't expect too many encores from me. I usually prefer to sit and observe others instead of having them watch me make a fool of myself."

He was about to take his first bite when a wee lass sat down next to him and introduced herself.

"Hello Eliza. I'm Nathan." He took her hand and gave it a kiss, giving Abia a subtle wink in the process. Two women for company? What could be better?

Watching the gentleman kiss Eliza’s hand with such care, Abia’s cheeks reddened once again, only she wasn’t entirely sure why this time. She cleared her throat and excused herself, suddenly finding the confidence that had been missing before.

As she took a few steps onto the stage, the tavern already quieted down. In all the years they have known her, nobody had ever seen Abia perform. She was always either too busy, or came up with some excuse every time somebody asked. Yet, now there she was. There were some hushed whispers in the back, but the silence was palpable. Abia began to feel the pins or anxiety creep onto the back of her neck, but she grit her teeth and fought through it. She whispered something the to pianist. He grinned, a little dumbfounded as well by her appearance, but ready to play anything she asked.

A soft song began to play, very light but sweet. She nibbled at her bottom lip again, taking in a deep breath to calm her nerves, but failing miserably. Nevertheless, she began, albeit a little shakily and off key at first, but slowly got into the rhythm, singing each note cleanly with a calm voice, as if she had been doing this for years.

This love it is a distant star
Guiding us home wherever we are
This love it is a burning sun
Shining light on the things that we’ve done

I try to speak to you every day
But each word we spoke the wind blew away

Could these walls come crumbling down
I want to feel my feet on the ground
Leave behind this prison we share
    Step into the open air

How did we let it come to this
What we just tasted we somehow still miss
How will it feel when this day is done
And can we keep what we’ve only begun

Now these walls come crumbling down
And I can feel my feet on the ground
Can we carry this love that we share
    Into the open air

    Into the open air

    Into the open air

This love it is a burning sun....

When the last word faded, the whole room remained silently staring, some mouths agape. Her face turned a deep red, unsure how to interpret this reaction, “uh......” she quickly turned to the pianist and gestured to him to start a more upbeat song. He nodded in response and began playing Drunken Sailor, which she in turn began to sing, hoping to get her patrons out of this stupor she accidentally put them in. “What will we do with a drunken sailor? What will we do with a drunken sailor? What will we do with a drunken sailor early in the morning.” And soon, many of them joined in, while others continued their conversations, “way-hay and up she rises, way-hay and up she rises, way-hay and up she rises ear-lay in the morning.” Abia quickly rushed off the stage as a couple of the patrons came onto it to join and dig the verses very drunkenly, but happily.

She found a dark corner to sit in and relearn how to breathe. Meanwhile, Eliza kept making her moves on the adventurer as soon as the initial shock of Abia singing wore off. “So, what brings you to a Little ol place like our quaint village?” She asked, smirking and walking her fingers along the man’s broad shoulder teasingly.

Ryò took his eyes off the young woman, noticing the nervous uncertainty in her body language. He was thoughtful as they played a bit of music, as it was new music to him.

He smirked faintly as he saw Abia dart off, obviously embarrassed despite her pleasant singing voice. He moved fluidly towards the pianist. "Feel free to get a drink, mon àmì. I have a couple I think may interest some of these," he said quietly as he rolled his shoulders, the guitar in one hand, the other in his pocket.

"I don't know if any of you will recognize these or maybe ye will," he said mildly as he exhaled.
