Both his brows lifted as he looked at the boy. That didn't quite answer his question, nor was that the reaction he was expecting. Well, who was he to assume? He took a quick glance at the women again, and one of them, sure enough, also had a few tears. Seems nobody got the real message after all...until he looked up and saw the barmaid again. She seemed to have been paying attention and her expression showed something else. Confusion? Did she understand it? Probably not, but he couldn't help but smirk anyway.

Nevertheless, he had a fellow musician waiting for him. With his attention back on Zataire, Damien answer, "Thank you....didn't you say you wanted to play something with me?"

Nathan had caught the end of the song. He knew a troubadour named Astley that sang a variation of the song. But in all probability, Damien was expecting too much if he thought the younger crowd here tonight would have heard of him. It was a crowd more in tune with beer drinking songs.

"Why thank you, Abia," he replied when she handed him one of the bottles of scotch. He'd already decided that the rum from the other night was not to his taste. Filling a plate of food to go with the drink, he headed back out to the floor and his booth in the corner next to the fireplace, reserving the seat across from him for Erin by putting his boots up on it. The girl was beginning to grow on him. Whether she used the money she'd made from the errand to get a room or continue to share his was up to her. He liked to keep relationships simple.

"I did!" he says excitedly, holding up his strange instrument.

Erin was still standing, watching the reactions to the song and didn't immediately notice when Nathan sat down. She started towards him, then hesitated, unsure if his boots on the other chair meant he wanted space to be left alone. She was usually reasonably good at reading people, but she didn't want to intrude, either.

As she was pondering, she suddenly remembered the money in her pocket. "Oh," she caught herself, turning back to Abia as she dug through her pocket and held out the money. "Here's the change." It was a bit surprising that Abia hadn't asked for it already, but it was a busy night and she had a lot of customers to focus on.

He quirked yet another eyebrow, both at the instrument and at the boy. "Ok, well, what is that?" He asked pointing to his instrument, "And what would you like to play? Or would you like to just follow along with me while I play something?" This conversation seemed to be going on for far longer than he had anticipated. Perhaps this boy has some deficiency and needs more patience and attention than others. He only had so much to give, but he would do his best. He lifted a hand and beckoned him to the stage.

As she was serving drinks and food, Abia turned to Erin as she was handing her the change. She merely waved a hand and shook her head, “oh it’s fine, you keep it. In case anything comes up that you might need, you’ll have that. ‘Always have something with you in case of an emergency’ that’s what my father always told me.” She put a single finger to her chin and stared at the ceiling in thought, “Though, as I recall it now, I think he was talking about a weapon. But, eh” she shrugged nonchalantly, “what can ye do? Just keep it all the same.”

Erin didn't move, leaving her hand still partially extended as she processed Abia's offer to keep the money. That had never happened before. Really, she'd seldom enough been given money and sent to buy things in the first place, but not having the money demanded back first thing when she returned was a first. "Uhm, okay, thanks," she stammered, finally pulling the hand back and dropping the remaining coins in her pocket. She watched her for a minute more to make sure it hadn't been some sort of joke, then turned back to Nathan to try to figure out if he wanted company or not again.

Nathan removed his boots from the chair when Erin looked his way and raised his glass to signal she was welcome to join him. With Abia, she'd acted as if she'd never been given money before. Maybe that was all that was needed to turn her towards respectability. Turning towards the stage, he was still wondering what that instrument was in Zataire's hands. This could be something interesting or something terrible. As for the guitarist, he seemed equally puzzled by both the lad and his instrument.

"PLAY SOMETHING," Nathan yelled with a grin.

Erin was glad for the invitation to sit, although she realized she'd have also been contented to find a table alone to quietly work through everything that had happened in the last 24 hours. She still wasn't sure what to make of her status with Nathan, although she was increasingly sure the room sharing offer was likely to remain open even if he hadn't suggested any sort of formal arrangement of her working for him. And Abia seemed to by going out of her way to help her beyond just the errands in exchange for food arrangement. Maybe she'd be willing to take her on to help around here the tavern when Nathan headed off to his next war.

She headed over to Nathan's booth and set her food on the table, turning to watch the stage as well. It was an odd feeling not to be hungry enough that the site of food didn't push away all other interests, but at this moment in time, she was just as curious to see what the musicians were going to do.

When the boy went silent, Damien only sighed in frustration. Too bad. He was hoping there would be somebody with whom he could duet. Not that the boy would be his first pick, especially with an instrument as unfamiliar as his, but he always did enjoy having somebody to play with. Rather, he much preferred somebody who could sing. His voice was fine, perhaps from the reactions of the patrons, it was better than fine, but he always felt others were better than him. Until he found a partner, he relegated himself back to his solo playing. At the request of the loud man by the fireplace he strummed a few more chords.

Sifting through his memory bank, he drew up another tune. He did not know the words to this song, but he knew the melody more than well. Perhaps somebody in this establishment knew it and could jump in? With that thought, though not expecting it, he began.

Ah, a good tavern drinking song. And if the guitarist wasn't going to sing it, Nathan would. He started loud, because that was the best way to get everyone else involved.

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And think of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend
    We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
    We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Those were the days my friend
    We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
    We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me
Those were the days my friend
    We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
    We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
la la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same
Those were the days my friend
    We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
    We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la La la la la la la

By the end of the song, everyone was stomping to the beat or pounding the tables

(sorry I've been gone for a while) He snaps out of his thoughts to quickly say "Whatever you play, this will mimic the perfect instrument to go along with it, and give me the skills to play it!" He says excitedly.

Erin watched Nathan and then the entire room's enthusiastic singing with some amusement. She didn't know the song to join in, but tapped her foot and nodded along. When Zataire explained his instrument, she found herself analyzing it. Did it work that way for anyone? And if so, how much would it be worth? Probably not as much as a horse. Maybe more, though. Musicians usually didn't have much money, but then it wouldn't be a musician who'd want it, probably.

"Where'd you get that?" She asked, while waiting for the guitarist to answer.
