    Somewhere in the near future:

Spring Training. February. Place: Midland, TX. Specifically training facilities of the Baton Rouge Dragons.

It was Jennifer Trout's seventh season as manager of her mother's team, which coincidentally was also the seventh year of the USSA. That is: The United States Softball Association. She had become the youngest, and smallest manager in the history of sports, standing a mere 4-9 and only 18. Her vast knowledge of the ins and outs of both softball and baseball rules made her an easy pick for a management position as she was too small to actually play the game. She had been the student assistant coach at her high school, which was just a fancy way of saying a glorified scorekeeper with coaching perks. Usually drilling rules into the team's heads... In a gentle way. She was well known in the southeast, and especially Louisiana, by the time she graduated. If her mom hadn't hired her, someone else surely would have. In fact, the Mobile (AL) Tide, Tampa Bay Shawnee and Atlanta Southerners were in a bidding war over her. The last six years proved to show why, and the Tide were kicking themselves for not trying harder. They had been through three managers. They could've been the ones practically unstoppable.

The Dragons had their share of rivalries in the SE Division. Mobile, Kansas City and Cincinnati, though two were friendly with constant trades (player swaps) with the Stars, and what turned into more of a protective phase with the Princesses since their spring training facilities were right across the road from Kansas City's. The two teams even dated each other. The biggest couple being the two first basers who shared famous last names of hall of fame first basemen in baseball. Wisp Chance (Dragon) and Georgia Brett (KC). Wisp was the only actual relation to hers... Georgia was just named for the Royal.

Jennifer was Scottish, and more times than no that came out when she lost her temper with her team. The schedule was always grueling with 144 games in a season. Somehow, Jen pulled off five one hundred win seasons in a row, though she won only 88 last year, being the first professional softball manager with 600 wins in a career. Right now, her mom was scolding her about owner/manager differences on the phone. She sat at her desk in her office, staring at her phone. "Mother. All I'm sayin' is they were low draft picks. 3rd round ye say fer both? Aye, yer the owner... But we've alway seasoned 'em in Orleans a year." She dropped her head on the desk. "I dinnae say that, Mother."

Shortly thereafter, Kansas City Princess Sapphire Ruby (she only used her first and middle name professionally), walked in the office after knocking twice. "Ms. Trout? Our van is down and OUR Jenny is coming in this morning..." Jennifer tossed her the keys, that Sapphire juggled before catching. "Um. Thanks?"

Jennifer nodded. "Do me a favour, will ye, lass? Pick up any Dragon there?"

"No prob, Ms. Trout." With that, Sapphire exited the office.

Two hours later, Aurora Mills walked into the locker room holding her head; Jennifer held out a cup of coffee. "Yer a wee late, Sleeping Beauty, an' too young for a wee drop."

Aurora groaned. "Not hungover... By that." She accepted the coffee and went to her locker.

"Oh?" Jennifer pressed, eyebrow raised. "An' wot exactly be ye hungover wi'?"

"What was yesterday and what don't I have?" Aurora had her head against the locker.

Jennifer rubbed her face. "Do yerself a favour lass, lay off the bloody choc'lit, aye?"

Samantha Hawke had been a star in High School and then at LSU, until an injury sidelined her for the last half of her senior year. She was fast and had homerun power which helped lead the Lady Tigers to three SEC championships and a National Championship. Before the injury she was one of the best second baser in college softball, and a utility player, as she could play outfield and Short stop as well. It was her versatility that had made her such a threat until a rival had slid into her instead of the base and injured Sam's knee, ending her college career half a season before it should have. With no more college eligibility she enter the draft, however as she had yet to play a game since her injury she didn't expect to be drafted. She even missed the prospect games and workouts because her doctors refused to clear her. She was lucky since she didn't need any surgery, but it was talking time to heal. So she was shocked when the Baton Rouge Dragons drafted her with one of their later picks. She didn't expect to be drafted at all, much less by the "hometown" team. She lived only a few miles north of the city. She figured if she had been drafted at all it would have been to one of the less successful teams in the USSA.

Being only one state away, she opted to take the bus to training camp, having been even more surprised to get the invite to Spring Training then being drafted. Her Doctors had finally cleared her, but they were doubtful that she should even try to play. What Sam didn't know was there her Doctor was a fan of both LSU's biggest rival and the Dragons' rival as well. There had been rumors that Mobile might be looking to draft her despite her injury status and many of the owners in the league thought they had inside information. While Samantha hadn't thought about it, her doctor had been a lot more caring during that time, even having Sam come to the office and massaging the girl's injured knee and flirting with her while running her hands over her knee and thigh. Sam however didn't think about it much, even if she did enjoy the massages she didn't think about any of the rumors surrounding the draft and she as still oblivious to her doctor being a Mobile fan and feeding them her medical reports, though she wasn't oblivious to the obvious coming on to her. Though that had stopped when Sam had been drafted to the Dragons, and her doc reluctantly cleared her but suggested she sit out the season for safety. Meanwhile Mobile was still trying to trade for Sam ever since the Dragons drafted her, and her doc hoped to get a job as their team doctor if they where successful.

With a sigh Samantha stepped off the bus and looked around, not really sure what to look for as she hadn't been told what the team training camp shuttle looked like. She pulled her LSU bat bag over her shoulder and looked around. She noticed the waiting area and made her way over to sit down and hoped to see another player or they shuttle arrived soon. She definitively hoped she hadn't missed it. None of her teammates from college had been drafted to either Baton Rouge or Kansas City. Of course she could have asked, but she didn't really know anyone and was uncomfortable revealing that she was there for training camp. Most people probably wouldn't believe her, or if they recognized her she could be overwhelmed by people looking for autographs.

Shelley Agler, a petite (more in build than height of 5-6) redhead with freckles on each cheek that resembled the five pip on a die, and looked a bit like Anna from Frozen with her twin braided ponytails and frosted tuft of hair in the front stood in front of the girl with the LSU bag. "I almost went there. Kinda wanted to. But overprotective daddy insisted I stayed close to home. I wasn't about to be a Sun Devil. Wasn't about to be any kinda Devil. So..." She swung her own bag off her shoulder and put it down next to the gold lettered "LSU", as she sat in the chair next to Sam, showing off her tri-colored "A". She had been an Arizona Wildcat, and their star pitcher. Like Sam, a base running incident had sidelined her for the rest of last year. It was her own fault, though, as both her dad, Phoenix manager at the time (now Kansas City's), Jeff, and her coach at the college warned her she was no "Charlie Hustle". She had knocked herself silly at a game a few years ago running into and through an outfield wall in a "Miraculous Ladybug Kitty Catch" that was all the rage, and even went viral before making the college sports highlight reel. Then she pulled a "Rose/Fosse All-Star Plow" running over the rival catcher in her injury last year... Even though she was safe and scored the winning run she had to be told about it when she woke up in the hospital. "I was taken 3rd round by the Dragons, like 75th overall, right behind a hometown girl for them. Samantha..." She blushed and bit her lower lip as turquoise eyes squinted in thinking mode before looking embarrassed at who she just struck up a conversation with because of a bag. "Man. It's a predator bird. Sharp, keen eye. Anyhoo, name's Shelley. Shelley Agler. Heh. I..." brighter blush with stupid grin. " I... Heh... Usually leave opposing batters... this is an embarrassing nickname... Shell shocked."

Sapphire had to park in her own team's shuttle spot, and use the mirror card that said the Dragons white van with the logo of the smiling Chinese style Dragon face on the sliding door, was in use as the Princess shuttle, because someone else in a four door sedan illegally parked in the Dragons' spot. As the spot was opposite the Dragons, the sliding door was opposite to anyone looking out to the parking lot, wouldn't have seen it as the Dragons'.

Sapphire, who's hair was dyed as blue as her namesake gem, was at the ticket counter as the two buses with Sam and Shelley came in.

The bobbed blue haired girl came over and, for lack of a better term, flumped on the other side of Sam while dialing a number on her cell, and placing it to her ear. "Hiya, Ms. Trout... I'm here at the bus depot. Some jackass parked illegally in your spot. Yes, ma'am, again. Called cause Jenny Callahan is still in transit. ETA of her bus? Ten minutes according to the ticket counter guy. Dumb as a brick that one, though, trust me. Who? Shell Shock and Samantha Hawke? Dunno. What do the two rookies look like?"

Sapphire slowly turned towards the two. "I... Think... I JUST... }Gulp{... Sat next to them... To bitch about MY teammate." She gave the two an embarrassed weak smile and weaker "Princess wave" as if she was a real one and not the ball player.

Shelley couldn't help but giggle. "It's okay. You didn't know."

Sam sighed as she looked towards the parking lot, not seeing any shuttles. Of course no one had told her what it looked like, so without any visible logos she wouldn't find it. She shifted her gaze as someone stopped in front of her and looked up at the girl. If she had to guess she would say the girl was about an inch taller then she was. "Arizona State is a good team, but the Wildcats aren't too bad either," Sam replied simply. Sam sat back and closed her eyes as she listened to the other girl talking, she almost laughed as the girl hadn't recognized her at first. Not that she blamed her, it had been half a year since she had last played a full game. "As you guessed, Samantha Hawke, and I guess we never got the chance to play each other, cause I'm pretty sure I'd remember that kind of nickname," Sam replied with a small smile as she opened her blue eyes once more. Her shoulder length black hair currently had one purple and one gold(yellow) streak in it. She hadn't had time to change the streak yet, but it some something she had become known for since high school when she put a blue streak in her hair during a high school playoff run that her team ended up winning. Since then she always kept at least one team colored streak in her hair during the season. It was sort of like a good luck charm.

As the other person flopped down on her other side, Sam arched an eyebrow and turned her gaze to the newcomer. Her annoyance stemmed from the fact there were quite a few empty seats to choose from. She narrowed her eyes at the blue-haired girl as she heard her name, then gave her a 'I'm right here' look before her eyebrow arched again at the wave. "I take it you're our ride? I didn't see the shuttle or I wouldn't have sat down," Samantha commented as she picked up the strap for her bag. She was ready to get settled in, and she was hiding a bit of nerves which might be coming off as abrasive at the moment. After all everyone had told her, including her Doctor she wasn't likely to get drafted because of her injury. "Sorry, it was a long bus ride, but Midland is too close to fly from Baton Rouge, at least in my opinion, not to mention more expensive then it should be,' she added with a small sigh.

Meanwhile the Mobile Tide were still trying to trade for Samantha, and if that didn't work they hoped her Doctor would release information that would get her cut, then they would swoop in and sign her.

Sapphire was amused by the sudden desire to be on her way that Sam was showing. "Reeee-lax, sport. Kick back. Gonna be at least ten minutes, we're waiting on one more player. No sense wasting gas. Ms. Trout already knows you're here, that's all that counts." Sapphire was showing how laid back Sam's manager, and her own new one was, IF you informed them what was going on, as she stretched out, hands behind her head, and closed her eyes.

Shelley blinked askance. "So... Ms. Trout is the opposite of my dad?"

Sapphire opened one eye, glancing behind Sam to the pitcher. "Your dad's Jeff Agler, right? He's our new manager. I just sent him a text about the delay, and he said thanks and let him know when Jenny's bus comes in and we're on our way... Before driving us all back."

Shelley shivered. "Ohh, you better let him know before, and not during or when you arrive. You think the LAW is hard on texting drivers... Wait til you cross Jeff Agler. Oh. Word of advice? 'I forgot.' is a very bad and lame excuse. Don't use it."

Sapphire sighed and nodded. "Straight from the daughter." She looked at Sam. "What about you, Sport? What's your story?"

Owner Trout, meanwhile, saw through Mobile's scheming, and sent a sure fire deal killer. "I want yer #1 an' #2 draft pick choices; Dana Gollin, yer one handed startin' left handed pitcher; an' yer battin' coach Michel Rodin." she retaliated in the return email. No way would Mobile depart with their only perennial 20 game winner, best coach, and any draft picks for a maybe. She could've just said no, but apparently "no" wasn't in Mobile's vocabulary... So she'd take Mobile's absolute best.

"Well excuse me for wanting to get settled in... I didn't even expect to be drafted and be here in the first place..." Samantha replied as she narrowed her eyes slightly before standing up and picking up her bag. Putting the strap over her shoulder she decided to walk around a bit, as she had already been sitting for far to long. "At least point me to the shuttle so I can put my bag in it," she added as she watched Sapphire and Shelley. She wasn't really sure what to do, because she was too antsy and nervous to just sit around. She needed to move around a bit, of course if Sapphire was a player and had been training all day she couldn't blame her if she wanted to rest. For Sam she had been sitting on the bus all day and couldn't make herself sit anymore if she didn't have to. As she stretched she did listen to the conversation, though wasn't certain if anything really applied to her at the moment.

The Mobile Owner frowned at the counter offer, but wouldn't give up yet. "We'll give you our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Round picks for the next draft for Hawke." was the confident reply. "Come on Trout, do you really want a player who's going to be out for the whole season taking up a spot on your roster? I've got her latest medical report right here in my hand. Her Doctor says she'll likely need surgery after all, and could be out for as long as a season and a half maybe more. She'll be dead weight on your roster. What do you think your fans will say when the report is published in tomorrows newspapers, and on ESPN."

Sapphire got up. "Gonna need the keys. It's locked." She looked at Shelley. "You wanna put yours in, too?" As Shelley grabbed her own bag, Sapphire led the way to the van which probably only sat ten as it was a run of the mill late model. "Hope you ladies don't mind Holiday Inn instead of the Ritz, but this isn't major league baseball." She smiled patting the van as she popped open the back doors. "Not much to do around here I'm afraid... Unless you like honky tonks." She rolled her eyes as Wisp Chance, 22, approached, wearing her uniform. Dragons across the front in red and gold, with a green seven with gold glitter. The bottoms looked like a pair of skorts with just a shade more flair. White socks that started at the knees where the skort ended, with all three Dragon colors as stripes along the top of the calf. Red, gold, then green. The shoes, well battered, were greyish (actual color) with Wisp's number in the same green with gold glitter as her jersey. Hazel eyes peered out under a cap with a honey brown ponytail sticking out the adjustable "back window". The cap itself, had a big happy smiling Chinese Dragon face with a gold "BR" running slantwise along the right cheek as one looked at it from straight ahead. It was brightly colored with all three team colors.

Sapphire decided to play to Wisp's ego as she said, like some fashion announcer, complete with using the keys as a 'microphone'. "And modeling what you will be wearing yourselves, is your first baser Wisp Chance, great-granddaughter of the legendary Chicago Cub! Notice the elegant nuances of the glitter on the number to make it appear more prominent! No way will your fans not see where you're at even if muddy! The Dragon was styled after the Chinese versions that promote good luck and prosperity among other things and the back of the jersey displays your last name in that same nearly impossible to cover up green/gold glitter look."

Wisp, who had been a well known child fashion model, posed like the professional she had been, with a big toothy grin, even pointing to the parts, or taking off the hat and presenting it as her hand waved around it. Wisp could always become a game show model during the off season if she wished.

"Where's your other half?" Sapphire asked.

Wisp giggled as she rolled her eyes. "Where she always is. At the honkytonk teaching th' boys how to drink beer, play pool and shoot darts."

"And probably winning the belching contest." Aurora snorted, arriving behind Wisp. The second baser was 5-6 herself and well toned and tanned. Her dirty blonde hair was currently straggly looking and all over the place. Black lines under her eyes seemed to reflect more than her green/gold glitter eye shadow that really did little to enhance almost green eyes. She even looked like she slept in her blouse, although her jeans seemed ironed at least. "Sometimes I wonder if Georgia Brett really isn't George Brett Jr."

Wisp looked dreamy eyed up with a sigh. "Oh... Believe me... She's all girl, in case you're wondering."

" I wasn't." Aurora groaned, holding her head as if hungover... Which she sort of was if anyone knew anything about the cacao bean where chocolate came from, and how strong dark chocolate could be. She really didn't see the attraction Wisp had for the only Princess that was more Queen of the Honkytonks in Texas, than ballplayer.

She addressed Sapphire. "You're in hot water with Mama T, Saph." She said poking her. "How does it take two hours to pick up three people? I coulda done that by now."

Sapphire folded her arms. "And Ms. Jen has probably already got on you for hitting the dark chocolate again, hasn't she? You wanna go there Rory? C'mon."

Aurora backed off, hands in air. "Didn't ask to deliver the message. Told to. By Jen's mother. Don't kill the messenger."

At that moment, Jenny Callahan's bus pulled in, from Amarillo, and the passengers started disembarking.

Mama Trout smirked. Got them. "I wonder how the Commissioner will feel... Or what she'd do... If it gets oot that you're getting inside information. An' you're being played like bagpipes. You really be thinking she'd been eligible for the draft if she wannae ready for at least class 3? Now, Dana Gollin AND June's #1 draft pick must be PART of any trade offer. Good day t' ya, then."

Samantha followed the blue-haired woman to the shuttle and realized she had looked right at it several times. With a small sign at not realizing it sooner she put her bad into the van where it would fit, then took Shelley's and put her's in as well. Might as well try to make a better impression then she already had. While she was putting the bags away she didn't notice the approach of the others but she did hear what Sapphire said about not having anything to do and not staying at the Ritz. "I'm fine with that, it gives more time to focus and less distractions, though I figured they would put us up in better hotels. Not that there is anything wrong with Holiday inn, they just don't often like extended stays," Samantha commented before she straightened back up and looked around. It was only then that she noticed the other two women approaching. She couldn't stop herself from rolling her eyes and shaking her head at the actions of her soon to be teammates. She didn't really have much to add so she simply leaned against the van and listened. She stored away all the information she learned from listening, though she doubted any of it would be important.

"There's nothing illegal in what we're doing," The Mobile Owner snapped. "Plenty of injured players enter the draft, we both know you'll just end up cutting her, this way you get something for her, it's our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round picks or nothing."

Sapphire couldn't help herself as she gave Sam a flirty wink. "I was talking about the van being more Holiday Inn, Sport. We're booked at the Budget Inn, Aunt Zinnia's Bed and Breakfast and Red Roof. I wouldn't mind seeing you where I'm staying. You got spunk. I love spunk."

Aurora rolled her eyes. The rookie was officially initiated into the friendliness and camaraderie that was the "rivalry" between the Princesses and the Dragons.

As Jenny Callahan came over, she gave what did NOT look like a friendly any kind of thing at Sapphire. She hauled off and literally booted Sapphire, placing a cowboy boot into the ass of the blue haired utility player (she could play all nine positions effectively well), who stumbled slightly forward toward but not into Sam.

Sapphire was Jenny's girlfriend, but only in Jenny's warped mind. Jenny was also the jealous type... Usually taking it out on her "alledged" girlfriend.

Wisp showed Sam how protective the Dragons players were of the Princesses players by grabbing Jenny by the collars. The beanpole girl had the meatier one off the ground. "What the hell, Callahan?! Your own teammate?! When you gonna get it through that thick skull of yours that Sapphire isn't interested?!"

Sapphire whistled. "Everyone stop. The two heading to check in at the training facilities get on the van. All others who want a ride, in the back. Callahan, I outta put you back here with the bags, but Mama T would have my ass cuz there's no seatbelt back here, and Mr. Agler would have her leftovers! I want you as far away from me as possible, though."

"Shotgun!" Shelley called, but with both forefingers pointing at Sam. Apparently, she was trying to play matchmaker.

Sapphire rubbed her face as she sent the texts required, and Jenny angrily and defiantly went in the back seat alright. By way of the small space in the back, up and over the back of the van seats that sat three, giving everyone, but especially Sapphire (she hoped) a shot of blue panties as her denim skirt slid up. "I know you're one, Callahan. And now everyone on the ride back does too." She took a deep breath, looking directly at Sam. "Well, Sport... Since you were elected shotgun..." She pointed to the front passenger door, "It's yours for the taking if you want it. I enforce the seatbelt law up there though. Physically, if I have to. You look more mature than your fellow 20something rookie, though, so I doubt I'll need to."

Wisp took a look back and saw her lover sprinting for the van at a full tilt. "I think Georgia wants a ride." She called as the brunette dressed in a similar outfit as Wisp, except in Kansas City's royal blue and light purple colors. A royal blue 5 on her jersey, the hat had a light purple tiara that took up nearly the full front with three peaks spaced evenly apart, the middle was higher than the two on the ends of equal height. The first peak had a royal blue "K", the middle a royal blue oval "gem" of some type, and the last a royal blue "C". "Missed the kari-okie contest, babe." the taller, and more muscular lady said, practically sweeping the much thinner Wisp (in comparison) literally off her feet, which caused the ex-model to giggle and plant a kiss on Georgia's cheek.

Audrey Trout, Mama Trout or Mama T to her team and the Princesses that were always hanging out with the Dragons (like Georgia and Sapphire) away from the field, looked at the latest e-mail. She was done with this and decided enough was enough. Time to be blunt. "I hered Cleveland is apt t' be ridden themselves o' their 19 year old, injury riddled utility infielder that when healthy is quite capable o' doin' some damage on the field. Ye be wantin' damaged goods so bad, go after her. Ye hered me offer. Ye hae t' add to t' continue this. An' now I do bid ye a good day as I hae two rookies t' greet an' take t' see our doctor who's a-waitin' fer them in 'er office."

After sending she went to the front of the complex to greet the van. Jeff Agler with his KC fitted ballcap on, and Jennifer Trout with her BR fitted hat on, were already there in anticipation. A stark contrast as Jeff stood 5-11, dwarfing Jen and her 4-9.

Samantha watched as the new comer kicked the blue-haired girl. "Well that was uncalled for! Did you learn you manors in a barn or something?" she snapped. Though it seemed she didn't really need to say anything after all as her soon to be teammate had already acted before she had spoken up.

She couldn't help but roll her eyes at the childishness of Jenny. Though her attention was soon pulled to Shelley as she heard her call and saw the fingers pointed at her. This cause her to arch an eyebrow before shrugging and getting into the front seat. She honestly didn't care where she sat, she was just ready to get to the training facility and get settled in.

Sam was quiet for the whole ride and when they arrived she was happy to get out, stretching as she did. She was surprised to see the group waiting for them as she figured most managers wouldn't bother.

Mobile simply replied with a "You'll come to regret this," kind of threat before pushing the medical report through to make the evening edition of ESPN.

Jeff introduced himself first, tipping his hat with a slight bow to Sam, before straightening up to hug his daughter. "Don't Shell Shock your old man's team too much." he teased, after telling Shelley to do her best and wow her teammates.

Sapphire took a few moments to tell her new manager about Jenny, while also, seemingly, singing Sam's praises regarding the rookie's spunk.

"Ye know th' rules, Saphie. Ye keep romancin' off the playin' field during th' games." Audrey said waving a finger at the blue haired lady. She glared at Jenny. "An' now ye be knowin' why yer banned from our clubhouse." Audrey huffed at the silent one finger response. "Ver-rie mature, lass. Ye sure yer 24?"

"Follow me to the team doctor, ye newbies." Audrey said with a wave, ignoring Jenny's silent response of a slap to her ass, as Jeff barked at Georgia... Who was apparently all over Wisp.

Aurora began walking toward the locker rooms, Sapphire running after her to clear something. Obvious the two were friends, but BFF's would be a longshot.

As they neared the Doctor, who was waiting for them, Audrey, who was 5-4, and graying, spoke up. "Ye can call me Mama Trout, Ms. Trout or Mama T, but wotever ye pick, stick wi' it. Yer manager is Ms. Jen til she tells ye otherwise. Doan let 'er size fool ye int' complacency. She's apt t' crack th' whip on ye." She then introduced the Doctor. "Valerie Richmond, MD... Wots this?!" She saw the SportsCenter teaser:

"Coming up at six on SportsCenter! Breaking news from Midland and the Draft Pick that went wrong! Have the Dragons finally blundered big with Samantha Hawke? Details forthcoming in fifteen minutes!"

Audrey left the three cussing a mean Scottish streak.

The doctor shook her head and asked Sam in first. "Looks like relaxing may be put on hold, Ms. Hawke. Let's find out what has ESPN so worried and Audrey seeing red, shall we?"

Shelley paced in the waiting area, Sapphire and Aurora joining her, concern on the faces of all three, though Saph looked like she aged a decade by the care seen on her face. Just as Dr. Richmond released Sam to them, Saph shook fists at the ceiling screaming "pack o' lies! Pack of FREAKING LIES!"

"Exactly why I contacted Glenn Reinhardt in Cincinnati of the Reds." Richmond said calmly. "I found nothing wrong. However, I am forced to second guess myself, despite what I see with my own eyes. I talked to Audrey who called the commissioner who called me." She looked at Sam. "That was the important call I had to take during your exam," She turned back to the other three. "This reeks of sabotage, and if anyone of you can hazard a guess of who and why, I'm all ears." She turned to Sam. "Unfortunately, since I cannot stand on my own report of not finding anything, because I'll look like I was paid to say that, I need you to stay off that leg until Dr. Reinhardt gets here to look at it. He'll report his findings directly to the commissioner as that's who will be paying for this second opinion. I'm sorry, my hands are tied."

Aurora looked worried. "When will Dr. Reinhardt be here?"

"Day after tomorrow. He's at Reds training in Sarasota and has an emergency of his own. Soonest he can be here."

"Ach." Audrey had shown up. "Tis the Tide's underhanded dealings is wot i-tis. Cuz I said nae t' their trade offers. They're bein' fed BS from a shady member o' th' medical fields, an' now tis all over the news. Startin' wi' ESPN. This innae proven wrong by th' weekend, it'll be front page in Baton Rouge an' th' sports scandal expose on WAFB. I promise ye they're lookin' int' it." She handed Sam the paper that had her address. "Yer at Aunt Zinnia's Bed an' Breakfast. More comfortable beds an' more nutritional meals. Was where I was placin' ye anyway. T' be easier on yer knee. Now... Til Reinhardt sees it... Yer stayin' off it." She looked at the two forlorn faces of Aurora and Sapphire. "An' wot has ye two down in th' mouth? Tha's where ye two are, aye?"

Sapphire shook her head. "Not the point, Mama T. That just means one or both o' us has to stay with Sport and miss practice until Reinhardt sees her."

"Aye. Ye both do. Was lookin' fer an excuse wi' Rory o'er her bloody bingin' again. Ye already given Sam here a nickname, so ye are too. I'll talk t' Jeffrey, now ye two g'wan." Audrey shooed Sam with them. "Behave an' stay off tha' knee, aye, Samantha?"

(Can fastforward to and through Reinhardt's visit and official clearing)

Sam nodded at the introductions as she grabbed her and Shelley's bags, passing off the pitchers bag to her before following the owner into the facility. She expected it, though not so soon on arrival as she figured all new players had to get a medical evaluation. Though she couldn't help but feeling a bit doubtful if she would be cleared or not. After all her doctor had been telling her that she wasn't fit to play yet. But she knew that she didn't feel hurt, in fact she was hoping the new doctor would tell her diffently then her own doctor.

She listened to Ms. Trout as they walked, but remained silent as they arrived at the office of the team doctor. As Sam saw the news story her mouth dropped, and she could only stare at the screen before being pulled into the doctor's office. She couldn't really say she liked physicals but her previous doctor had always found ways to ease her doubts or tension. However right now there was little Dr. Richmond could do to ease any tension the news was causing.

After the exam she wasn't very happy, as the findings and story contridicted each other. And now she would have to see another doctor. She didn't really like male doctors either which only added to her tension. "Are there no other women doctors who could give a second opinion? I know he's just checking my knee... but still..." she didn't finish what she was saying as she left the room.

A frown crossed her face as she was told she wouldn't be allowed to do anything until after the other doctor had arrived. With a huff she picked up her bag and stormed away, hopefully in the direction of her hotel room. However before she was out of ear shot she spoke up. "Stop calling me Sport!" she snapped as she continued walking away, her bag slung over her shoulder.

Sapphire tried to ease Sam's mind as she ran after her. "Well, what would you like? Maybe 'Tiger'? Sure ain't calling you 'Shortstop' or 'Spunky'! The latter sounds like something out of the 30s! What did your teammates nickname you?"

Sam had gone the right direction and would see the Bed and Breakfast across a busy state route. Aurora hadn't bothered running like Sapphire did, and as Sam would learn, Sapphire would bend over backwards for her, while Aurora would make sure she was comfortable or had a book, Sapphire went above and beyond, with breakfast in bed. She even explained in detail what Aurora wasn't sure of.

"Unfortunately, the Commish only uses well-known and trusted Major League Baseball trainers and doctors. They're specialists in sports injuries, and have female patients in their civilian practice. I had to see the one from the Los Angeles Angels, so I'll give you some advice. What I did was wear a skirt with a pair of shorts, not Daisy Dukes, but shorts where your knee is fully visible." She shrugged. "As long as he has full visibility of your knee, Reinhardt won't have an issue."

The day finally arrived and even Reinhardt was uncharacteristically nervous with the now three different reports. One said it was injured but didn't require surgery. The other, given to ESPN, said it did. Then there was Richmond's which said all clear.

Reinhardt was very professional with a decent bedside manner that should put anyone's mind at ease. One could even be called fatherly. He even allowed Sam's two roommates to stick around.

Finally, Reinhardt straightened up. "I'm telling the commissioner that you're clear to play, Samantha." He glanced over to the cheering Sapphire with an eyebrow raised. Aurora was just grinning giving a fist pump. "Let me guess. Your teammate is the vocal one." He turned back to Sam. "In my personal opinion, the ESPN report is a load of crap. Professionally, you should have been cleared months ago." He hit some buttons on his medical electronic notebook. "My report is on it's way to the USSA Commissioner, but you're officially cleared. Go have fun." He smiled and headed out the door.

Samantha glanced back at Sapphire, "Just Sam or Samantha, I don't have or need a nickname," she replied, her voice still held an edge. Not that it was directed at anyone in particular. Once in her room Sam had tossed her bag across it before she had thrown herself down on the nearest bed, not caring it of was her's or not. She was annoyed and pissed off, and it showed.

The next day ESPN reported, stating a leak in the Dragons camp, that the Dragons doctor had cleared Sam creating two contridicting reports about her health. This caused a debate about which report was fake and which wasn't. Some said that the original report was genuine and that the Dragons were planning to force an injured player to play, while others said the original was fake and meant to sabatoge Samantha's spot with the Dragons. Some even suggested that Sam could he faking the injury because she was scared to play after the original injury.

On top of this report there were also reports of the altercation at the Bus Station between Jennifer Callahan of the Princesses and the Dragons players with Sam's name being thrown around as well as a supposed threat from Callahan directed at Aurora and Sam, as well as Wisp and Sapphire. This was sparking almost as much debate as Sam's injury but not enough to keep people from talking about that.

The following day and after the second exam in three days Samantha felt a little better knowing she was cleared. However, the ESPN reports were still effecting her as made evidence by her mood. "I have no comment regarding their attitudes or personality quirks." she replied before leaving the office. She made her way back to her room to get her bag. She needed to release stress and the best way to do that was the batting cage so she needed her bat.

Jennifer Trout, Audrey her mother, Valerie Richmond the doctor all knew who the big mouthed leak was, and by the time Sam would arrive, flanked by Aurora and Sapphire; the batting coach was getting a three way royal ass-chewing. The Scots weren't mincing words, but the doctor did have to translate some of them.

Jeff had been over for brunch with the owner, Georgia and two other Princesses were conversing far from the bullpen and that lecture with a couple of Dragons Sam hadn't met, as well as Wisp and Shelley.

Sapphire called to one of the Princesses. "Dunwyn! Gotta friend who needs to whack a few! You wanna get lit up?"

The golden blonde with the braided ponytail that went down to her ass trotted over, laughing. "For Dragon batting practice? Always ready!" The lady smiled, tipping her hat to Sam. "Calla. You heard my last name. Ready to inflate my ERA?" Without waiting for an answer, she took her place behind the pitcher's cage, and reached into the nearby barrel of softballs. "I'm usually Mr. Gullett's go to anyhoo. Have been since I was 17." The 21 year old called to Sam. "Was traded a few winters ago from here to there. You want slow or fast pitch right off?" What Sam asked for, she'd get.

Aurora called to Calla, "Where is our pitching coach?"

"Bad seafood!" Calla called back, before fully focusing on giving Sam some batting practice.

Jeff, on the bleachers waiting for the Trouts said calmly, "Glad I had the chicken..."

Samantha wondered about the chewing out that was going on, but decided to ignore it. She already had too much on her mind as it was. She needed to clear her head, or else the stress would overwhelm her soon. As she set her bag down and pulled out her bat she heard Sapphire calling someone over and frowned slightly. "I was just going to use the batting cage..." she commented pointing to the netted area with the pitching machine. Though seeing she wasn't given a choice she nodded, "Fast, I usually practice with pitching Machines set to max velocity." she replied as she got her batting helmet out of her bag and put it on followed by her batting gloves as she stepped up to the plate. She didn't have any team equipment yet so her equipment was all LSU colors. Once the pitches started coming she hit them with all her strength, not even trying to hold back as she took out her stress on each ball thrown. Her timing was good, which meant none were fouled off, but not all were too or over the fence either. She didn't look rusty, which meant she had likely been in a batting cage even during her supposed injury. She would likely go until her hands hurt, from the constant impact of bat and ball, or worse if no one stopped her.

Aurora spoke up as Sam addressed what she intended. "Not a good idea... You use that without Gullett there to keep it working properly... You'll bludgeon it to death with your bat in the space of fifteen minutes."

Calla Dunwyn had a speed comparable and sometimes over Jenny Finch. But so did Shelley Agler. Calla nodded her understanding, shrugged, and pitched at 60+ miles per hour every time.

Sapphire was drooling. "Damn! She's got good everything! Five obvious tool!" Apparently she was falling for Sam even harder.

"You haven't seen her field, Blue." Agler warned as Jennifer finally came over.

For 45 minutes, which was fifteen minutes shy of a single player's allowed time for the batting cage, Calla pitched hard and quick, grabbing a ball as quickly as she sent one. Sam apparently hit harder. Finally, she showed Sam the empty barrel, or rather empty funnel like top, which meant the rest of the barrel was empty as well.

One of the Dragons, a red head mop topped girl came over. "You do know the most homers in a softball season is 49, right? Set that my rookie year. Can't live up to my own bar." She chuckled uneasily. "Aniowa Davenport. Like, I'm 'an Iowa'." She smiled putting out her hand, as she explained how to pronounce her name. "I got teased a lot, growing up. That one..." she pointed accusingly at Wisp's girlfriend, who was stealing a kiss from her fellow first baser. "Didn't help matters. Nicknamed me 'The Hawkeye Girl'. Try living up to THAT."

Sapphire blinked. "You never mentioned who you grew up with, just constantly glared at Brett."

"Then I DID tell you." Aniowa smirked, while giving her comeback. "You aren't blonde under that blue, are you?"

"Natural color, leave my hair shade outta this." Sapphire pouted, mumbling just audible enough the two closest, Sam and Calla would hear, before she headed to the bleachers and flumped.

Calla stared at Sapphire mouth and eyes open, unable to ask the obvious question of 'how?'

Sam didn't realize she was putting on a bit of a show, but she did work out a bit of the stress she had been feeling. Though not all of it, but her hands were definitely feeling the effect of the 45min of batting. Usually her coaches yelled at her if she did something like this, she was surprised she didn't have one chewing her out now. It also surprised her that the veteran players hadn't say anything about it either. As she saw the bucket was empty she sighed and took off her helmet, tucking it under her arm. As she heard the other woman she arched an eyebrow, and accepted the offered hand, granted hesitantly, since her own hands were still feeling the effects of her batting. "Samantha," she introduced herself, "Ya'll seem really obsessed with nicknames..." she commented, with a slight side glance at Sapphire. After introducing herself Sam made her way over to her bag and packed up her batting gloves, helmet, and bat. Still being new she wasn't exactly sure what she should do now, the only reason she had come out to the field was to relieve stress, and now that was mostly taken care of.

Sapphire looked up and met Sam's eye contact. She shrugged, still hurt by the stab at her once raven hair that had "bleached" it's current shade, if one could call it that, from her constantly being out in the sun.

Jennifer Trout approached Sam as Aurora once again was talking to Sapphire. "Was gonna say nae a word til ye haddit outta yer system, Samantha. But I dinnae EVER wanna see a display lik eet agin. Ye wanna relieve stress, ye ask yer roommates t' run wi' ye, an' order em t' keep up... Aye?" She looked at Sapphire. "Now wot's got Saphie all down in th' mouth agin?"

Sapphire looked up. Like it was something she was ashamed of, she answered, "No offense, Ms. Jen, but I'll only tell my roommates if they ask." Apparently there was more than just blue hair bothering her, and she'd seen how Sam's history got all over ESPN. There had been enough drama and/or stress this week. She didn't want her adoption out in public til she had a clue as to who her birth parents even were.

Unfortunately, it wasn't over. Three notes were waiting for them back at the Bed and Breakfast, one for each of them. Wisp and Georgia (who was staying over at Red Roof for the night with Wisp) would find a similar written one.

Supposedly, all from Jenny Callahan, threatening payback from the bus station incident.

Sam wasn't really sure what to say to Sapphire, mostly since she didn't know many of the others yet. So she didn't really know how best to interact with them all, to avoid upsetting any of them. When Jen came over Sam frowned as she was pretty much chewed out about her stress relief. She didn't really have any other way to relieve the stress at the moment, and running definitely wasn't one for her. "I'll try... ma'am..." she replied with a small sigh. Once she was sure the manager was done with her she turned to the other two, "Anyone up for dinner?" she asked simply as she picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder. She might be completely at ease with her new teammates, but she preferred company to spending time alone.
