I guess... This where I am now. In the middle of the woods, alone, with my pet fox. I haven't seen another human in weeks. I sit in the loft of the cabin, a hole in the wall about a foot from the loft for air. The Windows are boarded up tightly, the door has 5 different locks on it. The kitchen is stocked with canned goods, there are remains of a garden outside that can be reused, some annual veggies are in the make up, seeds in the cellar. I yawn softly as I get up, slipping into my clothes. I slept naked because I feel safe and it keeps my clothes a little bit cleaner. Then I look down the steps to the loft and look at a little orange ball of fluff running around at the bottom.

Having already lost his wife to the shuffling bastards, Mikhail Grigorenko strolled through the deserted streets, in desperate need of some sort of sanctuary. Any kind of sanctuary. Well, that wasn't entirely true. How about a safe kind of sanctuary then. The image of his beloved Isabella being dragged off of the fence and through his grasp would haunt him forever. Which is why his one solemn vow, other than staying alive for as long as possible, was to bash every single one of the undead motherfuckers upside the head that he happened upon.

He had spied green in the distance, and to him, that meant a forest or woods of some sort. Surely, that had to be a better bet than whatever waited and lingered in the city. Walking faster, he now had a clear goal to shoot for. Along the way, he had ample opportunities to secure numerous vehicles, whether it was a police cruiser, or a scooter, or even a school bus, for crying out loud! Mikhail chose not to enter the latter, as he didn't want to tempt fate at the grisly and sad sights that may have awaited him. Plus, all of those modes of transport not only made noises of their own, but also emitted their stinking fumes of exhaust. Not good if you're trying to avoid detection.

Wondering what to help himself to, as let's face it, walking royally sucked!, he noticed a Cannondale mountain bike lying on its side next to a blood-splattered mailbox. BINGO! he practically shouted to himself. No engine noise. No exhaust fumes. No worries. No need for gasoline, either. 'Course, only drawback that he could see was a definite lack of packing potential. Cuz let's be honest, you could only pack so much on a bloody bicycle.

An emerald nirvana now on his updated horizon, Mikhail started and immediately increased his pedalling pace.

About 3 miles into the woods, he would see a cabin of chipping red paint a rickitty porch. Behind it is a lake.

I get up, making my and light a few candles for some more lighting before unlocking the door to let Todd outside. I grab the fishing pole and head to the lake to catch dinner I turn back around and shut the door as Todd follows me around like a lost puppy dog. I pat myself as my hand lands on my lead pipe then I turn and grab my sawn off. "C'mon Todd."

The knobbly tires of the Cannondale helped immensely, as they dug into the ground below and offered way more grip than his weak-ass shoes could ever hope to attain. His goal not too far away, Mikhail decided to pull over and perhaps scope out the cabin as best he could. The last thing he wanted was a confrontation of any kind.

All seemed quiet, though of course, that didn't mean squat. Not here, and not now.

The cabin was just too enticing a prospect to pass up. He left the bike under equal parts broken shrubs and scattered leaves. He took his time on his approach, scanning as best he could of the surrounding area. Mikhail crept along, hoping and praying that the Holy Grail before him was empty.

I smile as I start back to the cabin with Todd and sack of fish when I duck down, someone was here. I look up then pull out my sawn off and slowly approach. "Put your hands up Asshole." I growl, a solid shooting stance as Todd growls between my legs.

From his vantage point, Mikhail saw no movement, heard no noise. Which is exactly what he would be doing if he was in the cabin. You definitely didn’t want to draw any unwanted attention by blasting music or romping around outside. Although he was armed, he chose not to equip any of his weapons, not wanting to appear overly aggressive.

Tossing ideas around in his head as how best to approach the cabin allowed someone to get the drop on him. "Put your hands up, asshole," a woman’s voice commanded. Doing as he was told, he slowly rose with both hands up, palms extended, turning toward her.

“Look, I’m not asking for trouble,” he said as calmly as possible. Quite obviously, the last thing he needed was for her to have an itchy trigger finger. “But I am hoping for a place to crash. I’m no bother, really, and I could even help out with stuff, whatever you might need.” That sounded like a reasonable request.

Mikhail wasn’t fooling himself though. Once the pandemic had established its vicious hold on the population, he noticed compassion in people went out the proverbial window. From the sound of things, this woman with a shotgun trained on him didn’t strike him as all that compassionate. If her calling him an asshole was anything to go by, that is. He coolly waited for an answer from her.

"And what can you do for me?" I ask sharply. "I have a garden, ammo, fresh food, what can you give me?" I asked as I fully raised the sawn off. He was most certainly attractive, but i had everything I needed, I can't play games with people and trust. What if he's some rapist psycho?

Those were good questions, he thought, and fair ones, too. Looking at her with her fox, poised to probably go for his throat at the slightest false move, it didn’t take Mikhail long to drum up some answers. “I can give you an extra set of eyes and ears,” he offered. “I can give you an extra pair of hands, someone capable of wielding weapons of my own.”

Nodding at her pet, he went on, “Between the three of us, we would and could always be on alert of any nearby zeds. With a cabin like this, you can’t possibly be on all sides to see who and what might be coming.”

Something spurred him on to say one thing more, and although it was a longshot, Mikhail figured what the hell. “I can also offer you, um, companionship,” he said. Realizing she may misinterpret that statement, he quickly added, “I mean, not like that, just, y’know, someone to talk to.” Arms still raised, he slowly gestured around himself by moving his torso. “I mean, look at me,” he stated. “I’m alone; you’re alone, and although you have that loyal pet. . . .” He allowed the rest to trail off into silence, as there really was nothing more he could think of.

Her gun would slowly lower as he talked. He had a great argument. A blush would come to her cheeks as he mentioned companionship, but then he explained himself. "I just caught dinner, come in and we can talk." She said softly.

The mystery woman’s response surprised him, to say the least. Still, it was a huge relief when she lowered her shotgun. She then invited him inside for dinner and conversation. Mikhail didn’t need to be asked twice, as he quickly accepted. “I’d like that, and thank you,” he stated.

Before taking a step, a thought dawned on him. Turning away from her, he said over his left shoulder, “I need to get something first.” A few feet away, he uncovered the Cannondale and hoisted it onto a shoulder. Now almost next to her, he explained with a nod toward the bike, “I found this in the city on my way over here. Comes in real handy as there’s zero noise, but I can still get around.” He glanced at her, considering, “We should be able to find one for you whether it’s abandoned somewhere or from a sporting goods store.”

Walking with her toward the cabin, he added, “I’m not sure what kind of transportation you might or might not have. And by the way, my name’s Mikhail, but you can call me Mik if you prefer.” Prior to extending his hand, he waited for her reply.

She picked up the bag of fish, reholstered the sawn off and then grabbed the fishing rod, she then watches him go to the brush and dig out a bike, he explained himself and even said they would look for another. He was becoming great company already. "I'm Tris, this is Todd." She said gesturing to the ginger companion.

“Good to meet you, Tris,” he said while shaking her hand. Glancing at her pet, he added, “And hello to you, too, Todd.” The fox now looked friendly, which wasn’t at all surprising to Mikhail. He had enough experience with people and their pets to know that the animal’s demeanor usually matched that of the owner. And since Tris was no longer hostile toward him, Todd adopted the same attitude.

As they neared the cabin, he thought of how good it would be to not only have a roof over his head, but also that someone would be nearby to watch his back. Mikhail, of course, would be doing the same for both Tris and Todd.

Todd let out a jekyll like cackle before running to the door and scratching at the door mat.

She smiled and unlocked the door, heading inside where she would make her way to the cellar after setting her things on the table. She turned on a generator which could barely be heard, it was small, enough to power a few lights and the stove.

A strange noise startled Mikhail, as he looked around for its source. It wasn’t Tris, unless she was proficient at mimicking sounds of nature. Had to be Todd, he thought, as he watched the fox heading toward the door, scratching at the mat. Smiling, he figured someone was eager to get back inside.

Turning to Tris, he said, “I’ve never seen anyone with a trained, pet fox before. He acts like your everyday Golden Retriever. How did you manage to do that?”

"Found him when he was just a kit." She said as she made her way upstairs. "Found him curled up with his dead mother, she had just been shot. Someone probably thought she was a Zed." She explained as she sat at the table to start descaling the fish she caught.

Mikhail listened politely as Tris spoke about Todd. The little guy must’ve been scared shitless when she found him. Curled beside his dead mother probably didn’t help matters. Well, the adorable pet was in good hands now, though he did struggle with a mental image of a zombie fox.

Watching her descale the fish, he reflected on Isabella and how her death had deeply affected him. In these troubled and uncertain times, he longed for the company of others, even if that company happened to be a fox. Provided said fox didn’t attempt to eat your face off. Mikhail realized that with companionship, there was also responsibility. And responsibility, in turn, held the potential for dire consequences, as Isabella’s gruesome death had proved.

He wasn’t sure how long he would be allowed to stay with Tris and Todd. Whatever time he’d have with them, however, he was sure to do his best at helping everyone remain as they were: human or fox.

Her question surprised him, as he didn't think he looked depressed, or any other emotion for that matter. Shrugging, Mikhail considered blowing it off and just saying how much he missed his pet cat. The world they existed in now, however, almost dictated to not be so choosy where potential friends were concerned. She and Todd seemed friendly enough, as they knew absolutely nothing about him. And really, he thought, what is there for me to hide from her? He was sure Tris had her own horrific stories to tell.

"Yeah, I'm good," he finally offered. "Just, um, thinking of my dead wife."

It was hard to not feel bad about someone else’s loss, even without knowing that person. In these times, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hadn’t lost at least one loved one to the zombie horde.

Dead girlfriend? he thought. Okay then, no romance with Tris, he mused further, somewhat relieved. This was good to know, as it sort of removed any pressure on him from being potentially smooth or any expectations from her. Mikhail never considered himself a ladies man, so little did Tris know, but she was under no threat of advancement from him.

Tris appeared to have everything under control, and he hated feeling like a fifth wheel. When they were done with dinner, he would insist on cleaning up.
"Sorry if the fish is bland... I have hot sauce." She smiled. "Red hot... My damn savior that always keeps without a fridge... I'll cry when I can't find it anymore. No one ever thought the apocalypse would taste so bland, but I'm prepared... Need to eat..." She laughed softly as she flipped the fish back and forth in the pan with the smallest portion of oil.

He shook his head at her apology, saying, "No worries about the fish. It's a hot meal, and I'm thankful for that. Plus, you cleaned and cooked it, which gives it that personal touch." Glancing at her flipping the fish periodically, Mikhail offered, "Naturally, this means that I get clean-up duty. It's only fair, right, cook?" He smiled at her.

Nodding at her response to his offer of cleaning up, Mikhail proposed, “Oh yeah, I mean, that’s the least I can do.” He glanced at Todd, figuring the fox probably didn’t require the use of utensils, so that just left Tris and him. “Besides,” he went on, “it’s just the two of us. Does Todd eat fish? I would think he’d eat just about anything.”

Mikhail couldn’t help but chuckle at how finicky Todd was with what he ate. Although, the more he thought about it, the more it made perfect sense. The fox was on to something, as fresh fish didn’t have a chance to spoil, provided it wasn’t kept too long. Meat from supermarkets was a definite no-go, as it had to have all spoiled by now.

If fresh meat was on the menu, it would have to be from newly caught game. That, in turn, opened up more hassle as a deer or rabbit then needed to be skinned, cleaned, with separation of what was to be kept, and what would be left for other wild animals to feast on. Canned goods was the only other possibility if animal protein was on the menu.

Well, contrary to what Tris had said earlier about the fish being bland, the aroma of anything cooked was pleasing to his nostrils. Todd sure was lucky to have someone looking out for him in all facets of pet ownership. Mikhail was unable to recall how long it'd been since he had a hot meal, not just something heated up over a burner.

She would lean down and set Todd's bowl on the floor before setting the plates on the table then bringing out silverware and a bottle of wine with two glasses. "Been saving this... No better reason to drink it than finally having another human around." She laughed as she opened it and poured them each a glass.

Things seemed to be getting better and better with each passing moment. First a roof over his head with someone to talk to, then a hot meal, and now some shared wine. Tris was turning out to be quite the hostess. “Thanks again for your hospitality, Tris,” Mikhail said. “You don’t know how much I appreciate it.”

He reflected on a few of his so-called fellow mankind who he encountered throughout his journey. Figuring she had to have met a few of those stereotypical lowlifes, he felt like sharing. “It’s not every day you meet someone as friendly as you,” Mikhail informed her. “Most of the people I ran into just to get this far would just as soon slit your throat, as wish you a good morning. Some were worse than the zeds.”

Watching her pour the wine, he counted his blessings that he hadn’t stumbled upon yet another psychopath.

The fish was good, and she was right. The hot sauce helped its flavor, though he seemed to relish the fact it was cooked and hot more than its taste. Although her question surprised him a little, it was understandable. At its core, her hint was clear to see.

Swallowing the chewed fish that was in his mouth, Mikhail answered her, “Nothing in particular. Everybody seems to head north for whatever reason. Think I’ll go northwest.” Obviously, he would be on his way in the morning, as he didn’t think Tris would insist on him leaving during the night.

Well, that was now quite the dilemma facing him. At first, he was under the impression that Tris didn't want him to get too comfortable here, hinting at his moving on. Yet, he didn't feel comfortable with inviting himself on her journey to Nevada. For now, he would just sleep on it, thankful that for one night at least, there was a roof over his head.

Mikhail's plate cleared, he dabbed at his mouth with a napkin, waiting for her to do the same before clearing the table for clean-up.

As she stood, Tris asked him a simple question, a question she did not need to ask twice. Mikhail nodded while meeting her gaze. “Yeah, I would, Tris,” he calmly replied. “I would very much like to come with you to Nevada.”

He’d be a fool not to take her up on her generous offer. Mikhail, however, was in no way fooling himself. He did not see this as a potential opportunity to get in her pants. Rather, he saw it as something he cherished more than that: the companionship that she and Todd would provide. Besides, he’d never been to Nevada before.

Washing the meager amount of dishes, Tris mentioned how it got cold at night. She even offered to share her loft with him. Wait, what?! Was she serious? Mikhail pondered. Never look a gift horse in the mouth, as the saying went. With that in mind, he accepted her second consecutive generous offer. The body heat they generated would be enough to deter the cold, in addition to her blankets.

During certain situations, he often wondered what his departed, beloved Isabella would think or say. And this was one of those situations. Knowing her, she would simply smile and remind him that you gotta do what you gotta do. With the world in its current state of decay, survival was now the name of the game. Using his thumb, Mikhail absentmindedly fiddled with his wedding band while reflecting on his dead wife.

Tris noticed his hands, then the ring. "I understand." She pulled out a chain from her shirt, a diamond engagement ring attached. "It was my fiance's, I lost her on the day on the outbreak..." She said softly.

As he was just about to ask about her I understand statement, Mikhail watched as Tris pulled a chain from inside her shirt. Dangling from its end was a diamond ring. He smiled at her with a melancholy expression. By now, he figured that every survivor out there had lost a loved one, if not more, to the outbreak.

“I’m, uh, sorry for your loss, Tris,” he stated, barely above a whisper.

"If you don't want to sleep with me for warmth, it's fine. It's definitely safer in the loft." Tris said softly taking her shoes off by the ladder for now.

“Nah, I’m okay, Tris,” he said, hoping to clear up any misunderstanding. “That offer of warmth is too tempting to pass up. I mean, who would actually choose to be cold?” Mikhail smiled at her as he watched her remove her shoes. He began to do the same.

While doing so, he wondered where Todd slept. Surely, the fox, after all, could only provide more body heat.

Tris looked back at him. "I have separate blankets. I usually sleep in just my underwear. The more naked you are, the warmer you are surprisingly." She said taking her pants off and letting out a soft, foxish murr. Todd would come running up, a bone in his mouth. "Drop it. No food in bed." She demands, he then drops it and she picks him up, setting him on her shoulder. She goes to start climbing up but she runs to the door, locking the different locks. She starts up the ladder once more.

She sleeps in her underwear? Mikhail reflected, somewhat distracted now. Well, they had at least one thing in common, as he did, too, albeit with a t-shirt on.

Removing his jeans, he watched with a mixture of fondness and amusement as she beckoned for Todd, who trotted toward her with a bone in his mouth. Mikhail smiled as the fox dropped his prize upon his master’s request. Her four-legged companion was then carried up to the loft. Some guys have all the luck, he thought with a smirk.

After securing the numerous locks on the door, Tris resumed her ascent. Mikhail felt it would be highly rude to stand under her while she scaled the ladder. So he stood where he was until the ladder was clear. Hearing her settling in, he then began his own climb.

Tris laid down after adjusting some pillows and blankets and removing her shirt. She curled under blankets with Todd curled up on her feet.

She smiled as Mikhail came up the ladder. "I made you a spot. We just met, didn't think you would be up to cuddling for the fall warmth."

Without his jeans, Mikhail could feel the cool air teasing his exposed flesh. Right then and there, he was glad of accepting her offer to share the loft. He felt a wave of goosebumps at the thought.

Almost clear of the ladder, he saw Tris already snuggling under the covers with Todd at her feet. The fox didn’t even lift his head at Mikhail’s potential intrusion. His eyes brightened at the mention of the spot she had made for him. Nodding his genuine thanks to her, he replied with a wink and a smile, “We just met, didn’t think you would offer.”

Tris giggled a little with a smile. "Hey, I won't lie, you're good looking and it can get cold this time of year." She replied, the only addition to her clothing was a beanie to cover her ears and short hair. She scootched over a little to give him more room.

Smiling at her compliment, he said, “Thanks, Tris, but y’know, look who’s talking about good-looking.” Mikhail nodded toward her, thus removing any doubt if she might think he was referring to Todd.

Sliding in next to her, his bare legs felt the coolness of the sheets and covers. With Tris there, that coolness wouldn’t last much longer.

Tris smiled. "Plus, try anything I don't, I have weapon hidden up here." She said softly and got a bit closer to Mikhail. "This is preparation also. If you're sticking with me to Nevada, we'll be going through Winters together." She said, sounding a bit timid, like her walls were dissolving, wanting to trust him. She curls up in her blanket, Todd moving up to nestle between her and him.

Heeding her warning, Mikhail found it unnecessary, but in all honesty, he couldn’t blame her for what she said. Holding up both hands for her to see, he stated, “Hey, no worries from me. I’m not about to try anything.” He smiled back at her, hoping she believed him.

Prior to tucking his hands under the blankets, Mikhail scritched Todd’s head and behind his ears. The fox obviously enjoyed the attention.
