Shock. Pain. Crying. Shouting. Running. Smoke. Blood. Heat. Rain.

A dream. It must have been a horrifying dream. That's how I feel; horrified. And thirsty. And sore.

My mouth is dry, drier than it's been in a long time. I move my tongue to try to get my saliva glands working and feel sand on my teeth. I spit it out, feeling more of the warm sand on my lips. I'm lying in what must be a huge pile of the stuff. My skin feels warm too, and I realize there's sand on my face. Moving my hand to swipe it off, I feel as though I'd spent a whole day working hard. Sitting up with legs crossed, I lean forward to shake my hair, feeling little grains slap my face and arms. My eyes crack open to reveal my old jeans and shirt, my dirty hands, tanned forearms and half-buried Adidas shoes. I spit again, getting just a little liquid but just enough to get the grit out.

Looking up, I see the setting sun, painting the sparse clouds a hundred house as a promise of it's return. I sit there for a while, listening to the calls of animals waking up as others prepare to sleep. Before the sun can make good it's escape, I hear another sound. A whisper, growing in volume as a pair of glowing lights approach on a road I hadn't noticed. Looking around, I see the lights off a city in the distance and realize that the car must be headed there.

Stumbling only a little, I get to my feet and skid down the dune to the road, raising an arm to be seen in the headlights and hoping not to frighten the driver with my appearance...

Quinn was driving back home from her vacation. She’d gone to Arizona to take pictures of the Grand Canyon and find all the supposed vortexes that were supposed to be scattered around the area. Of course, those vortexes were nothing like the ones at home. Their energy was very weak. She found it hard to believe that they were even there, a couple of them weren’t. In the end, she enjoyed herself and bought a few new crystals from a couple high end crystal shops but there was no place like home. Literally. The sun was setting as she neared her lovely home of NightVale. She could see the lights above the Arby’s already and the sight just absolutely delighted her.

In addition to the familiar sight she also saw something unfamiliar, which wasn’t uncommon in her home town but this was certainly out of the ordinary. There was a man standing on the side of the road. He moved toward it as if he was hoping she would slow down for him. Maybe he was lost and needed directions. She slowed her car and stopped beside him on the road. She rolled down her window and looked over him curiously, her dark greyish brown eyes running over his dirtied form. “Hey, are you lost? You don’t look like you’re from around here.” She said through her window. She brushed her lavender hair out of her face as she wondered where on earth he’d come from. Or off of earth for that matter since it wasn’t the first time otherworldly creatures had come near NightVale.

The car slowed and Jack felt a curious rush of warm releif and concern as it stopped a few feet past him. He stepped closer to the window as it rolled down and hunched over a bit to look the driver in her eyes.

Her soft, thin featured face matched the feeling in his blood as she brushed a lock of hair- which matched the sunset-stained clouds on the horizon- away and asked if he was lost.

"Yea-ach-" he coughed- turning his head aside and shielding with a hand. He cleared his throat and started again, trying to give the young woman a reassuring smile.

"Yeah," he said, more successfully but still in a tone harsh and hollow from dehydration. "I don't even know where here is, unless that's El Paso." He cast a tired gesture toward the glowing shapes down the road, hopeing that the town in the distance wasn't El Paso. For the first time since waking up a few minutes ago, he decided to check his pockets, finding both his phone and wallet in the back of his dirty-but-new jeans.

"I could pay you for a ride somewhere..." He said, opening his brown leather bi-fold and counting the bills within.

Quinn eyed him curiously as he came up to the window, coughing a bit before managing to respond. She tilted her head at him and laughed a little. “Sorry, sweetie, that’s not El Paso. We’re no where near El Paso honestly.” She told him before watching him check his pockets. She saw him produce a phone and a wallet and he proceeded to look to see how much money he had with him while saying he could pay her for a ride somewhere. “It’s a little late to be driving much of anywhere. I was just heading into town to get some gas and head home.” She explained, looking him over. She couldn’t just leave him there to get eaten by coyotes or whatever else was in the desert at night. She smiled warmly at him. “Why don’t you come with me? We can get you cleaned up, fed and you can crash with me tonight. And in the morning we can figure out what to do with you.” She said warmly. “There’s hungry nocturnals out here so I don’t feel right about just leaving you here.” She added.

Jack wasn't surprised at all when the girl confirmed that the town wasn't El Paso. Not thrilled, but not surprised. It had been a shot in the dark guess anyway, since he knew there could be any number of similarly desert-locked towns in America. At least he could tell by her accent that he was, in fact, in America.

For a moment, he thought that the motorist might leave without him as she started to make her excuse, but then she offered to let him crash with her. The tall and scraggly hitchhiker offered a friendly grin and his right hand when she mentioned nocturnal animals, saying, "Much obliged. I'm Jack."

After introductions were made, Jack walked around the front of the car and got into the passenger seat, set his phone in his lap and hit the power button. The screen showed only a stylized battery with a small red line at the bottom. "Figures," he muttered, flipping it over and slouching back in his seat.

"So," he said, looking at the woman beside him, "Where exactly are we?"

Quinn smiled as he responded to her offer positively, offering a friendly grin and his hand to shake as he introduced himself. She took his hand and shook it gently. “Quintessence. You can call me Quinn though.” She replied warmly, unlocking her doors to allow him into her car. She watched him walk around the car and get in. The car smelled faintly of lavender and the radio was playing quietly. She began to drive again as he checked his phone. “Probably for the best. There isn’t a much service out here anyway. You won’t get far with something cordless I’m afraid.” She told him gently. When he asked about where they were, she was about to answer him but she was cut off before she could speak by a incoming broadcast on the radio. “Listeners, we have a bit of new news coming into the station at this very moment.” A smooth voice said through the radio. “It appears we have a new visitor to our little town. Sources say his name is Jack and he was found by one of our own citizens outside of town. Who is he? Where did he come from? He’s handsome but not quite as handsome as our local scientist, Carlos.” The voice said before Quinn shut off the radio. She laughed awkwardly as they neared the billboard that signaled the entering of her home town. The billboard was a lilac color, bearing a large purple eye with a white crescent moon in the pupil. Neat cursive words read a simple greeting that Quinn uttered as the car passed the billboard. “Welcome to NightVale.”

Jack watched the sine wave of dunes pass outside the car window as Quinn told him about the shitty wireless connection. He kept staring out at the darkening sands as a man's voice announced breaking news, but jerked his attention to the radio panel when he heard his own name. He leered at the console as the anchor voiced a string of questions and even went so far as to call him handsome before Quinn shut it off with an embarrassed titter.

Jack's eyes shot up the line of his hostess' arm to her cloudy eyes as she quoted the billboard, ostensibly announcing the name of the town ahead. Jack had never heard of a place called Night Vale, but he got the feeling that things were only going to get stranger before he could make it back to Austin.

"So, Quinn..." He hesitated a moment, trying to decide what angle to play. Finally here decided to remain casual, hoping that things would sort themselves out. "What do you do?"

Quinn could tell that he was a little unsettled by the radio broadcast which told her that he was most definitely not from around here. She would have recognized him if he was from NightVale and he clearly wasn’t an asshole so she was sure he wasn’t from Desert Bluffs. She decided to try to keep the strangeness to a minimum as best as she could. She didn’t want her guest to freak out and end up causing more trouble for himself. Panic could end up with unfortunate circumstances in NightVale. As he spoke, her attention shifted slight to listen to him. His question made her smile a little. “I’m a clairvoyant. I read tarot cards and dechipher parts of people’s futures. I do other readings as well and I have been able to contact spirits a few times but that’s tricky. There’s not a lot of business with that around here so I also run a crystal shop.” She said warmly. So much for keeping the strangeness to a minimum. She laughed awkwardly. “What about you? Do you remember anything about before you ended up in the sand?”

Jack watched with careful consideration that edged toward the borders of apprehension as Quinn told him about her business, finally cracking a grin and nodding when he decided that she was sincere. "Cool," he replied and meant it.

The way she asked her question made him wonder if there were many other people who had appeared in this place in similar fair to himself, but he decided that that particular question could wait until they'd had dinner. Of course, before that, he'd have to carry on the increasingly strange conversation.

"I'm a musician," he said first, then paused as he tried to remember more. "I play in a band... We just finished touring our third album... That's all I can remember right now. I mean, I think I remember the faces of my band... But that's it." Brain racked, Jack leaned back against the window. "I could really use some beer, some coffee, and a slice of pie... Does Night Vale have a place for that?" He looked over at Quinn again, his expression that of a man with a Titanic hangover and a motherly figure to help him nurse it. It didn't matter that Quin looked a few years his junior, she had the right aura around her.

Quinn glanced at him as he responded to her words of what she did. She smiled a little. “I’m glad you think so. Most outsiders would think I’m crazy. Though... no one lives in NightVale because they’re all put together.” She replied softly. “A musician?” She repeated, seeming excited as she listened to him explain he was in a band and that he’d just finished touring for his third album. “What’s the name of your band? Maybe I’ve heard of it.” She asked warmly before he explained what he was in desperate need of. She thought over his needs. “There’s a diner not to far ahead. It has pie and coffee. I have some beer at home though so I think I can get you everything you need.” She told him cheerily as she switched lanes in order to get to the diner she mentioned.

It seemed like every time Quin opened her mouth, Jack had another reason to try and get home as quickly as possible, but at the moment he had no idea how to do that. Still, something about the psychic girl seemed to calm him, as though she were able to numb some phantom pain that he didn't even realize he'd been feeling. Besides, the town couldn't be nearly as bad as his runaway imagination would have it, or nobody would love there, right?

The best way he could think of to respond was with "Well Hell, hardly anybody's actually as put-together as they want you to think, right?"

When she asked about his band's name, Jack shrugged and grinned, "I dunno, I'm honestly still pretty fuzzy right now."

At Quinn's mention of a diner, the stranger nodded his head and sat up a little. "A diner sounds perfect, actually." He watched as she turned off the main road going through the town and headed toward a tall neon sign proclaiming the "Moonlight All-Nite Diner" and the parking lot it was planted in.

"Yeah," said Jack, to himself as much as to Quinn as they entered the parking lot, "That sounds perfect. Actually, I am really hungry; how about I buy us both something to go?"

Quinn laughed warmly at his response. “I suppose that is true, isn’t it?” She replied softly. She smiled at him gently as he said he couldn’t remember the name of his band. “Well, I’m sure it’ll come to you eventually. You can stay as long as you like. NightVale is a delightful place to live.” She said cheerily. She could tell he was a little uneasy and probably uncomfortable with the strangeness of her town so she wanted to put him at ease as best as she could. She was pleased when he seemed keen on the idea of the diner. “They have the best key lime pie, though I prefer chocolate pudding pie over anything else.” She said with a small giggle. She turned into the parking lot and parked, looking over at him as he suggested he go in and get them both something to eat. She smiled at him again. “Your memory is fuzzy but I’m glad to see your manners aren’t. I haven’t had someone offer to buy me dinner in a while.” She said warmly as she turned the car off. “I’m not in a rush to get home. We can eat here if you’d like.” She suggested.

"Really, nobody?" Jack did a melodramatic double-take from Quinn to the parking-lot around them and back to her as she got out of the car. "Either this town is packed with hotties or that's the strangest thing I've heard all day." He tried on a charming smile and pushed his hair back before jerking his head toward the glowing diner. "Let's go see if we can get a booth. Oh, is it cool if I leave my phone in the car?"

Jack held the glass door open for a pair of hipster girls to exit just before entering the Moonlight All-Nite on Quinn's coattails. Or would it be by the train of her dress? Either way, he spotted a busboy wiping down a booth near the fire-exit door and got permission by way of a welcoming nod from a cook behind the counter to lead Quinn to it.

"Thanks," he said to the busboy as he finished cleaning the table and set the condiments down. "I'll get Darlene over here for you in a minute," said the spindly teenager, "can I get you some drinks?"

"Oh, yeah, man," Jack fished out his wallet and handed him a $5 bill, "Pot of coffee, and whatever she wants, thank you."

Quinn shrugged at his response, smiling at his melodramatic actions as she got out of the car. She giggled at his words and charming smile. “The men here are alright but it’s been a while since I’ve done anything dating related. I’m too busy telling other people what I see in their future relationships.” She said with a small laugh. She nodded at him in response to leaving his phone in her car. She thanked him gently as he held the door open for her after the hipster girls had passed by. Upon entering, they were given a booth pretty quickly which was nice. She settled down across from him and smiled at the busyboy. She let Jack order first before giving her drink order. “Earl grey tea, please. Thank you Jason.” She said, addressing the busboy politely by his first name. She knew everyone in the town. It was one of those places where everyone knew everyone even if the town seemed a little too big to be able to support that kind of personal level of relationships.

Jack watched Jason disappear into the kitchen and took a quick survey of the dozen-or-so people in the diner. They all seemed like a fairly normal-if ethnically diverse- evening crowd for a smallish-town diner. A few couples, a small family, a table of guys wearing football jerseys, and the three or four waitresses floating around. Everything seemed normal, except there seemed to be something about the way the red and purple light from the sunset was filtering through the tinted windows that cast a strange shadow across every face in the diner.

For one small, terrible moment, Jack could see- painted in colors and lines upon a parchment made from the pulp of time itself- every sorrow, pain and fear of everyone in the room, as if they had each told him a different secret that all agreed up to the sum of evil in the world. For one small, terrible moment, Jack could feel his mind tearing free of the restraints of possibility and tumbling into a chasm of despair from each escape was as hopeless as from the infinite void at the center of the Galaxy, which held the very stars in place.

For an infentessimal, interminable moment, Jack feared what he might see if he looked just a bit too the left and faced Quinn. Then, before he could produce a substantial protest, he turned his eyes just a bit and looked at Quinn. Quinn looked different. Or, rather, she looked the same. Her face showed only a friendly smile, mixed with a protective worry- no, not worry... concern. It was like looking away from a house fire and into a home.

With a blink and a groan and a shake of his head, he pulled himself back into reality. "Shit," he muttered. "Hey, is the sun setting slower than usual? He asked, realizing that he'd been awake for almost an hour now and the sun was still visible on the horizon, having barely moved at all.

Thankfully, that was when a blond woman in her thirties appeared with a pot of coffee, a mug for it, and a big cup of tea....
